I think a dowry is the money a woman brings into the marriage, no? Although in Jane Austen novels, it's a woman's "fortune." Which the husband has full control over after they're married, of course.

The age of consent is somewhat arbitrary when you consider people used to marry much younger because life spans were shorter. But it's crazy for a state to declare 16-year-olds mature enough to marry when they're not even allowed to vote!
  • in the west dowry generally is paid by the woman's family. in the east it usually paid by the man's family.

Hmmm. Naw. In my culture , the man coming to ask for the daughter has to give her father the money he requests for his daughters hand in marriage. The man also has to buy her gold worth whatever amount her father says he must buy for his daughter or just give her the money to choose whatever gold she likes. The whole wedding is also paid for by the groom as well.
  • Dammit I've been giving the milk away for free!!!

Damn you Papi Chulo!!! Buy the damn cow already!

Note that in many cultures, a pint of Schaeffer is considered ample compensation.
  • Ha ! No.

Now , had you said White Castles or one of those Carneviento sandwiches I keep reading about on here , I might just agree with ya.

They'll get you some lovin'. Must be the onions. Mmmm , onions. :drunken:

So who pays when it's a boy couple in the West or a girl couple in the East?

I don't think there are established traditions for those cases.

That's a shame. The gay couples I know who got married were right into tradition. More than me at any rate. This lack of established dowry principles is clearly just one more example of entrenched discrimination.
