Ok Chuckles, you're a bit late to this thread, so here's a recap:
If you, as a driver, never park in bike lanes, never double park (and yes, if a car is double-parked so there's barely enough room for a car, I will ride in the middle of the street and I will take my lane which I have a legal right to until I get past that double-parked car, regardless of whether you honk like a ----head.), always yield when you''re turning, and never open your door into traffic without looking, then maybe you have a right to talk.
But you do all of those things without thinking about it, I'm sure, like 99% of the drivers in NYC including myself. So calm your cranky self down, drive your car, and remember that that bike could be another car getting you stuck in traffic.
My OP was referring to bikers who do not know how to bike in the city. Cars and bikers need to work together and just as many bikers are at fault as drivers. Both drivers and bikers need lessons about how to move safely through the city, particularly Brooklyn.
I take great pains not to double park, make turns without looking in my mirrors, and open my doors without looking. I almost never honk, unless it's a safety situation. I stop for 3 seconds at stop signs and always yield. I do these things because I used to be a daily biker, and messenger, and I skateboard everyday. I don't yell or get worked up while I drive, and I have never been issued a ticket for a moving violation. The whole point of my OP was to vent and give a driver's POV because I do not want to hurt a biker with my car. I suppose you don't ever run red lights. Yeah. Perhaps you should run yourself a nice cool bath and chill for a minute and reflect on all the great and safe biking experiences you have had as an uber cyclist, buddy. Lemme see that grinning chin! Cheers. -

My mistake in trying to be reasonable and polite. If you reread my post you'll see that, unlike you, I made no claims to being perfect as either a driver or a bicyclist, nor to any right to lecture other people as if I were perfect.
And you're not really making me chuckle. I'd describe it more as laughing out loud. -

Ok charm school grad. I take it all back. -

Um...if you're on a bike, you're not supposed to be riding on the sidewalk anyway, so what the hell does it matter to you how big someone's stroller is??
Thanks for giving us other bikers a bad name, "integrity." -
Exactly. $100-$300 fine.

I got in a nose-to-nose argument about this just the other day. I was in the bike lane and there were two double-parked cars, the first on the right, the second on the left. I was going at a good clip, but some assmunch came flying up behind me. The double-parked car on the right made him have to enter the bike lane behind me. The second car, double-parked on the left in the bike lane, was only a 4-5 car lengths ahead so I continued on through the "S" with this jackass riding me, maybe a car length behind. I looked back and gave him the death stare as much as possible while navigating. After the lanes both opened up, fucker had the nerve to pull up along side me and say, "better ride faster next time, buddy" I laid in to him with a tirade of "fucks" "assholes" etc, etc, etc. In an effort to play tough-guy, he stopped his car and got out to challenge me.
"You better ride faster next time, or I'll run you down" says he.
"Fuck you - I'm entitled to the lane, asshole."
"No you're not. Not in this state."
"You want me to call a fuckin' cop and ask him?!"
"Why you gotta get all nasty and call people assholes?"
"Hmmm. I think that I'd rather have you call me an asshole than threaten me with your 2-ton car, riding on my ass, asshole."
At this point, he resorted to weak shit like telling me that I was acting immature by shouting in his face and *gasp* making a scene, then he actually had the nerve to say that he was in the right 'cause he's a New Yorker, and he grew up here. Fuck you, you fuckin' fuck. -
How do you stop and get out of your car to yell at somebody, and then accuse _them_ of making a scene? That is very funny.

As a driver, day after day it amazes me how inept so many of you are at riding bikes in the streets of the city, particularly in this, and surrounding neighborhoods. Here's what I see: you don't ride at the speed of traffic, preferring to leisurely pedal at 5 mph, without a care in the world. You often ride two, or even three abreast, in order to better facilitate conversation with your biking buddies as you make your way down streets. You even ride against traffic on narrow streets and get mad when honked at. You have been seen riding so far from the curb and parked cars that you end up in the path of moving cars. You don't use headlights at night (illegal), hand signals, bells, and you almost never look over your shoulders. To top it all off, most of you don't even wear helmets, which baffles me.
I'm going to go out and buy me a fixed gear this weekend just because of this post!
As a former bike messenger, daily driver, and native New Yorker, the only thing that makes me curse out loud in my car is how so many of you bike like your on a sun-dappled, suburban sidewalk. It makes me furious, really.
I don't know when this happened in New York. Used to be, bikers and drivers had an understanding, and a certain rhythm in the streets of this city. Sure, there have been accidents, and middle fingers flipped, and filthy words hurled, but jeez, at least traffic used to move. Last thing I have to say to you "bikers" is: learn how to ride those super cool, retro metro, "I bought this $25 bike so I can sport a $100 Kryptonite chain," bikes. It would make a lot of pedestrians, and drivers a lot happier.
I am also a former bike messenger. I've been in two accidents. I ALWAYS ride as far away from parked cars as I can get away with and will always move out of the way when a car comes up behind me. I have this thing about not wanting dents in my head.
I drive too. Learn to live with it. -
Enjoy your new bike!

OMG. That sounds like the same guy who hassled me with his giant mastiff dog. Guy lets the dog's leash way out (it's really long) so the dog blocks the entire Eastern Parkway walking path. My small dog starts out friendly, then snaps unpredictably at big dogs, so I try to keep him away from big dogs. The a**hole saw me trying to keep a distance from his dog, and let the dog wander right up to us. I told him to pull the dog back. He started in with the 'ol, "I'm a native Brooklynite and this is how it is around here...blah blah...if you don't like it move...blah...gentrifier..blah blah...new people" (actually I'm poor and not new here)
Was your guy bald, thirties, white and a little chubby? Maybe it's the same jerk with the mastiff dog. -

Nope, nope and nope - they're brothers in spirit alone, I guess. -
Bikes on sidewalks: the wide stretch between the Brooklyn Museum and the Library is infested with them. I can't tell you how much I hate them blasting past me out of nowhere, scaring the beejeezus out of me, often missing me by inches. And of course no one uses bicycle bells to let pedestrians know you're coming.

Bells aren't cool on fixies (nor are brakes)
I wiped out yesterday on my bike, sprained my wrist. Blows -

Dim people tend to use whatever they can in an argument. The fact that these people were natives doesn't have much to do with anything, except now you have yet another street cred story to use when you complain about the townies at your roof parties.
The only reason yups don't use the same technique in an argument is because it would sound pretty ridiculous to be like "I'm a yuppie transplant from Cesspool Cul de sac, and I pulled up in a U-Haul with my fugly wife and cat 6 months ago, so blah blah blah.."
