Obstetrician reccommendations please!!!

I've read the older threads, but they seem focused on Gyn rather than OB medical services. I am looking for a state-of-the art OB that can help me with all the testing, that will be comfortable including a doula or midwife and other alternative, non-traditional (or, depending on who you ask, more traditional) plans in our birthplan, who has GREAT bedside manner and is friendly/patient with my concerns (first timer needing lots of handholding here). Must have great credentials. Location and gender are far smaller issues than finding the perfect doctor to help me through the best thing that's ever happened to me.

I thought Dr. Josine Veca at Methodist sounded GREAT, and Park Slope Parents love her too, but she is on sabatical for another month.

  • Go to Roosevelt in Manhattan - the doctors there are excellent. I was high-risk and worried about the experience, but my doctor and his colleagues were absolutely wonderful, and they were all fine with me having a doula. I wasn't able to give birth in the birthing center (which still operates, unlike the one at LICH which is closed), but they made every accomodation they could for me in the regular L&D unit and I was able to have a completely drug-free birth (but they would have been fine had I requested an Epidural). They have midwives there and I've heard good things about them as well. Their testing facilities are great (trust me on this one, I was tested fifty million different ways) and they are very thorough. It was worth the small worry about not being able to get there from Park Slope when the time came, but if you don't leave it until the last minute there shouldn't be a problem. In fact, when we got there I wasn't dilated enough so rather than admitting me and starting the clock early (which some places do), they told me to go for a walk and get something to eat. And the recovery rooms are great as well - about as close to hotel-style as you can get. Good luck!
  • I loved my obgyn. Not in Brooklyn but really great. Dr. Donald Matheson. He's got a great manner that put me at ease during my pregnancy. He's also open to doulas and very responsive to my concerns outside of office hours. He delivers at St. Vincent's. I have heard people with many different stories about delivering there but my experience was positive and I liked that it was a relatively small maternity wing. I have sent many friends to him and all have stuck with him (for baby #2). Good luck.
  • Dr. Guirguis is amazing. He has a practice on 3rd St. in the slope, and is very open to whatever your birth plan is. Good luck!

Dr. Matheson does practice in Brooklyn, but in Greenpoint. I think his office is at 934 Manhattan Ave. I agree- he's got a lovely manner.
