Freaky. I expect to see more and more of this kind of thing _covered up_ as the ramifications of the chemicals they put in our "food" become more known.

I'm becoming a cardboardatarian. Only virgin cardboard from new-growth forests, though.

  • There was a report in the New England Journal about 5 years ago about workers in a popcorn factory getting this lung disease (bronchiolitis obliterans) from exposure to diacetyl fumes. This is just the first time it's been recognized in a consumer of the microwave popcorn. This guy ate two bags a day, and used to directly inhale the hot fumes from the bag because he "liked the smell." Normal occasional microwave popcorn consumption shouldn't be much of a risk. FWIW, the 2 major popcorn producers have removed the compound from their popcorn, so this should basically become a nonissue.
  • That is one way to look at it. Another way is that ConAgra says they will get rid of it "in the near future." Another way to look at it is that they have KNOWN that it causes problems for at least five years by your report, so why is it still being used AT ALL? Why hasn't OSHA done anything to protect the workers that are _still_ being exposed to it TODAY? Tell the hundreds of workers with damaged and destroyed lungs that it is a "nonissue". Although I agree that it take a "special" person to inhale popcorn fumes twice a day for ten years, lol! So if a LOT destroys your lungs a LOT, does that mean that a little just destroys your lungs a little? And that is OK? I know you are just trying to context this a bit, so don't take this as an attack, I just think that this incident is indicative of a much larger problem in our food supply today. Da people _should_ be afraid to eat!
  • Two bags of popcorn a day!! Surely this guy has other health issues related to his lifestyle.

    Besides food, what about all the medications people are downing these days. Until I worked in the field, I never paid much attention to how our drugs come to be or how they exactly work. I will only take something if absolutely necessary these days (other than some ibuprofen for big aches).

    Does anyone else think that there are too many advertisement for prescription drugs these day?
  • WAY too much reliance on medication. And the ads are flat out insane. As are the huge kickbacks to docs to prescribe said medications. It is flat out scary. In the last, say, 5-10 years there seems to be a huge upswing in just throwing meds at anything rather than trying to actually figure anything out. Where it scares me the most is in children. There have been some studies on the long term effects of what they are doing to control youngsters that are chilling.
  • Speaking of popcorn, does anyone remember the Orville Redenbacher flavor "sour cream and onion"? Maybe in the mid-to late 80s that was my favorite snack, but after a few years we couldn't find it anywhere.

    You microwaved a bag of plain popcorn and then added the contents of a flavor pouch to the hot corn and it was amazing! I can still remember that taste. I miss it dearly. :cry:

    Thanks for the link. I have to admit I've gone through some obsessive phases of trying to find a replacement and I tried that exact stuff--not the nearly as good. The original stuff was so good it must have had something really bad for our bodies in it! I won't give up though!
  • I still don't understand how people can even eat microwave popcorn. it tastes and smells so disgusting. and yes, I have destroyed at least one pan by stove-top popping popcorn. it is now my popcorn pan, since it has popcorn size char marks all over it.
  • mmm...this is just making me crave more junk food. All of my favorite microwave popcorns get discontinued :( There was one called Buttery White (which my friends and I called Crack Popcorn) that was amazing. Homemade is good, but shoving a bag in the microwave is generally good enough for me as I don't eat it that often.

    I'm currently addicted to several chips that are almost as good as that popcorn. The spicy thai chips in the red bag are sooo good as are the garden salsa variety of sunchips. I can eat a whole bag of those anytime. I wonder how long before these are pulled from my hungry hands like my beloved sour cream & onion popcorn?
