That's a good question. The only thing I found when googling was that they are closed exits, but nothing more than that. I always imagined that they might lead to secret offices, or something related.

it leads to a sekert booze and drug and ho house.

Here's what I found. I wasn't able to copy and paste it but check out the link page 4.

I think we actually discussed this a long time ago, but I don't remember what was determined - I think maybe that it was just storage space? but that the stairs used to be exits? I think I'm going with the backdoor to Lil' Miss Muffin theory though :thumright:

I started a thread on this about two years ago... mystery solved within: http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=2109&highlight=#2109

What's up with the mystery closed off staircase on the 7th avenue Q station?
-
You open it up, no grapes, no nuts! What's the deal?
-
Wait..like the cereal?

oops sorry... i replied to the wrong post!

They lead to a long-closed exit at roughly Flatbush and Sterling. From the lobby level, note the closed-off corridors on either side... the entire southern half of the lobby of the station is blocked off. A while back I found a link to an MTA study (from about 5 years ago) listing what closed station areas should potentially be reopened; this one was listed, but obviously they never acted on the study.
Apparently the MTA is using all that space for "storage".
I really wish they would reopen it, since it would be more convenient, and also maybe help with the god-awful ventilation in that station during the summer... -
Wow thanks!

Mod Note: I merged these two threads. Feel free to carry on...
