Oh, yeah. Serj from SOAD nails it. Definitely what the Foos should be covering instead of this.

his voice is perfect for it. seriously, I'd love to have been able to hear the whole thing.
  • From Yahoo News/AP:

"Did Spears, lest we forget a mother of two, deserve to be held up against the standard of her once fantastically toned abs, sculpted by sessions of 1,000 tummy crunches? Or was she asking for it by choosing that unforgiving black-sequined bikini?

More profoundly, in an age where skinny models and skeletal actresses are under scrutiny for the message they're sending young girls, what does it say that we're excoriating a young woman for a little thickness in her middle?"
    (Emphasis mine.)

Meanwhile, that subtle, graceful beacon of journalistic integrity otherwise known as the NY Post called it "Lard and Clear". Classic.

  • i thought Britney's body looked pretty damn good...even in that bikini. i think it's funny that everyone is suddenly so surprised at how untalented she really is. sorry but britney spears has never had talent. none! another case of a pretty girl taken to undeserved heights my the public/media/corporate machine.

Funny, I thought she looked pretty good too after having 2 kids...
Granted, I still wouldn't touch her with a 10 ft pole because she's pretty gross.

True about the talent issue also....
  • I never could stand Britney's voice or her music. It was quite apparent that she didn't know how to sing and you could her how overproduced her stuff was because she can't even sing on pitch!

Rhianna at least is really talented. She may be officially R&B, but she has an alternative edge that I like. (Is it me or does the umbrella song remind you of The Cranberries too?)
  • Rhianna at least is really talented.
i just don't see it. and here is what really pisses me off. Chrisett Michele who is on the same label is absolutely outstanding. i think her cd is the best i've heard all year (from an R& B artist) yet she doesn't get half the attention the label gives Rhianna.
  • Chris Crocker defending her on YouTube, maybe even more of a train wreck than Britney herself...

  • Chris Crocker is one o' them there YouTube "stars" -- I heard of him from this feature in The Stranger a while back:

    http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Content?oid=232684

I'm guessing this video's sarcastic. Just putting that out there, since all the Gawker people got their panties in a knot over it today.
  • Chris Crocker . . . er, audition tape?
  • It doesn't matter if she has talent or not.

Lookit the thighs on this broad
    image

and the ugly, mannish look on her face. Ewww! Janis Joplin (in the picture above) was unhappy about her weight and took amphetamines and stopped eating until, at last, she weighed 88 pounds. Now THAT would be acceptable in a bikini! Or it would have been back then. Now she'd have to also do thousands of crunches to work it. Janice got sick and decided she'd rather be healthy than skinny and stopped the amphetamines and gained back the weight. And a fraternity at the University of Texas Austin named her "ugliest man on campus" in the college paper (she had acne, too). She quit school for the last time and started drinking.

Even if Brittany Spears had half of the talent that Janis Joplin had, she'd still be criticized most harshly because of her body, the way Janice was. And here, at the awards show, she asked for it, after all. Wearing that outfit.

Seeing the clips later I felt sorry for Brittany because she seemed confused or maybe like she was doing what someone had told her to do but with no passion or personality of her own. I didn't notice her belly until later, when I heard the mean comments. Many of us think that life would be easier for us if we weren't fat (or had acne, or whatever) but I see from the reaction to Brittany's perfectly normal, actually kind've cute body that it's never good enough. And it wouldn't matter if she was brilliant, or talented, or sweet. She still deserves derision for appearing in public, on stage, in a bikini.
  • She should take her bikini-clad self and come to Brooklyn's Coney Island to sun herself. She'd leave feeling ohsogood about herself. At least that's one place that people can go to just BE in a bikini - or speedo - or whatever.

Granted, she went on live TV in a bikini. I don't know why she did that if she wasn't 1) Ready and 2) Toned to her own standard. Her agent/manager/friends should have said something to her.

But please, calling her fat? No way. I'd love to have her body as long as I could still eat my L&B and spumoni. :D/
  • The funny thing is, I *have* Britney's body, though I have it not by having kids, but by being a generation older than her. And I would be perfectly comfortable in a bikini if it weren't for a skin condition on my legs.

What I find weird is that while Britney's shape is ok and healthy, people excorciate her for being fat, whereas my acting career didn't start taking off until I gained twenty pounds. (I don't know if there is any correlation between these two factors, but that and the fact that I'm being chased by tres cute guys 10-15 years my junior is why I'm not in too much of a hurry to take the weight off.) I used to be a size four. Now I'm a size eight and the only person who has called me fat is my ex-fiance and he didn't have the chance to do that very long.

But get this, I saw a casting call for "cute and chunky sorority-type girls". Ok, fair enough. But their definition of chunky was size *8* - 14. Since WHEN is size 8 - 10 chunky? Granted, I'm no longer skinny, but I'm hardly chunky. (Not that I would have submitted. My age range is in the upper 20's.) I always thought chunky was size 12 and up?

But then I often see totally unrealistic body requirements. (5'10" under 110 pounds, yeah right.) But those are projects I don't care to be involved in.

Being a straight man with no ties to the fashion industry I had no idea about women's sizes until a few years ago. One day, out of curiosity, I checked out the pair of jeans that were slumped over a chair in my bedroom. They belonged to my beautiful then-girlfriend and they were a size 10. "Wow, if my hot baby is a size 10, then this whole deal of being a size 2 is total nonsense," I remember thinking.
I will always regret not remembering the name of the female standup comic who I once heard say, in her act, that women were crazy for being slaves to the fashion industry, "which is run by gay men and other women. In other words, two people that won't fuck us." She got a standing ovation.

Oh, btw, I'm a bit confused: how can you be a generation older than Britney--who turns 26 in a couple of months--if you're in your late 20s? Which would mean that dudes 10-15 years younger chasing after you are 14-19 years old. Just sayin'...
  • "age range" means she can believably play an age, not that she is it. so she's saying that the youngest she can play onstage/screen is late twenties.

(this message brought to you by the committee for people who once had cubicles next to casting directors.)

As a size 12 woman we are not chunky but fabulously fluffy :D

I'm guessing brit is at a size 4 or 6 right now. and in a country where the fashion industry standard has been dropped to a size 2, she's chunky. in my world? she's svelte, though clearly fucked out of her head on drugs/booze.

and stacey? you're hot! enough with this fluffy crud. :D

The fashion industry standard may have dropped to a size 2 partly because of size inflation. Today's sizes seem to be cut way bigger than in years past. I think that a size 4 or 6 item one might buy today would have been marked as a larger size 20 years ago.

^This is what my wife tells me. I don't remember the name of the store, but at this particular store, she was trying on 4s, I think, but they were too big. After to talking to one of the girls that worked there, she was informed that there had been a shift in sizing, and that she'd have to look in the petite section instead.

    yeah, this is often discussed.

basically, there have been several sizing shifts over the years. people now, for instance, will tout marilyn monroe as a smokin' size 12 (or something like that - maybe a 10?) but if you have ever looked at a vintage pattern, you'll figure out very quickly that a vintage size 12 is more like a modern size 8. all of these sizes shifted backward, i believe, in the mid-70s.

then, sometime in the mid-to-late 90s, a bunch of designers/stores sized everything up. so a size 4 was labeled as a size 2, etc. that, however, is more of a trend in retail conglomerates, not among couture designers. the runway models all shifting to a traditional size 2 rather than 4 was impact post whats-her-name, the heroin junky model. twiggy impacted fashion in much the same way, frankly.

also, all sizing, no matter who the designer or store is, depends on a size model. a designer will pick a model as their size 2 or 4 or 6 or whatever and extrapolate backward and forward for the other sizes in their collection. donna karen, for instance, is famous for switching size models depending on her own size - if she's gained some weight, she picks a slightly larger size model. which explains why I own both a size 12 and a size 2x (from when she did plus sizes) blouse from dkny.

it's fucking crazy, frankly, and if you've got body issues, or are at either end of the sizing spectrum, the whole sizing issue can be, at the least, annoying as shit.
  • Let's not forget that height has a lot to do with it. I'm about 5'8", size 10. Yet if I try on something from say Europe, the fitting is totally different and I have to get it in a larger size.

By the way, I don't think people thought that Britney was really "fat"... just that she wore something totally unflattering to her body and her so called dance moves sucked. Just my thoughts.
  • poppy13 wrote: By the way, I don't think people thought that Britney was really "fat"... just that she wore something totally unflattering to her body and her so called dance moves sucked. Just my thoughts.
The NY Post titled their coverage "Lard and Clear".
  • Her dance moves would have sucked no matter what she was wearing. However, if she danced better, I doubt people would go on about her outfit.

Size inflation drove me BATS when I was skinny. There was a period where I couldn't find any clothes to fit me that weren't ungodly expensive. Size zero pants would fall off me and I WASN'T UNDERWEIGHT just on the low end of normal. And I would remember when I was even tinier and I could fit into a size six. Because I'm tall, going to the little kid's or petites section wasn't an option. There was a few years in the late nineties where I couldn't find a gown to fit me to save my life. I walked into one store, plucked an X-Small off the rack and held it up over me and my oversized coat AND IT SWALLOWED ME WHOLE. I broke down in tears right then and there.

Those were the years where I practically wore rags because all my clothes from high school (from which I graduated 15 years prior) were worn out and the only clothes that fit me were high-end designer clothes that I couldn't possibly afford. Forget about K-Mart. I was like, what is this? You have to be a heifer to be a size 2!

I do think the size inflation has been reined in a bit or I'd probably be officially a size 4 rather than an 8. But at least now I can find affordable clothes to fit me. The downside is that my size NEVER ends up on the clearance rack!

Anyway, sweet tea as the right of it. I'm a lot older than I appear, which is why I have men in their twenties chasing me.

Still, I'm glad I'm not 30 anymore. That sucked. I was an assistant stage manager in New Hampshire and my job required me to lock up the theatre at night. So frequently, I would walk home after midnight. I got picked up by the cops EVERY NIGHT because they thought I was a teenager breaking curfew. I once had them call my mother in Boston because they wouldn't believe me that I wasn't 15. My mother is never a pleasant person and less so at 1 AM. "She was born on September 18, 1969, a fact for which I'll never forgive her BECAUSE SHE MADE ME MISS MY SUPPER!!!"

To tell you the truth, I felt sort of sorry for the cop.

Everyone thought I was 15 that summer. It made buying booze (back then alcohol didn't trigger life-threatening asthma) an exercise in futility. And it's no fun being bullied by 20-year-old kids who think that you're younger than they are.

At least now I look like an adult, though occasionally a younger colleague will start off an anecdote with, "When I was your age..." :cyclopsani:

Or even worse, you could be a man, in which case your options in terms of size and variety are just pathetic.
  • I just buy what I want and if the number really freaks me out, I cut out the tag.
  • Bleh. Sorry about that. My ex-fiance woke me up with upsetting news and I couldn't sleep.

    (Most. Insensitive. Prick. Ever!!! :x :x :x )

And at that hour I tend to ramble.

oh please. i'll give you variety, but you get much more tailored sizing, at least if we're not talking t-shirts.

signed, tired of hemming my pants and rolling my shirt cuffs.
