impact zone: greater police presence — Brooklynian

impact zone: greater police presence

yes i recently moved here
no i don't think i am living in a war zone
yes i am concerned about safety, especially in relation to fire arms

that said,
after attending 1 police community council meeting
and 1 crow hill community association meeting
and talking to my neighbors
i believe that some of the drop in crime in the past was directly attributable to our community having benefited from being chosen to be part of operation impact (i know it's an old press release, but it's what i could find)

we will be submitted again in november and i think it is important to do what we can to insure being reinstated in this program.

  • I will go, and I will notify Molly, reporter at NY1, about the meeting.

  • Hello All:

I just spoke to Molly at NY1 and invited her to the 77th precinct meeting tomorrow night. She wants info emailed to her (which I will do) so she can document for her supervisor what is going on in CH, because they are tracking this.

If anyone else wants to contact her with more information about recent events in CH, her number is 212-379-3456, and her email is molly.rokasy (at) ny1news (dot) com. Also at the phone number is Cynthia Maldonado. They are both planning editors, and like I said, they are following these events/our organizing, so any more input would be great.

    Meg

MOD Note: I disabled the email address in this post so that spam bots don't grab it. just replace (at) with @ and (dot) with . for the address to work correctly in your email program
  • i have contacted molly...
    we'll see where that goes
anyone else who feels strongly on this issue might want to also

    and yes,
i'd rather be at happy hour or a block party (or a fish fry)
but just a reminder that this meeting is tonight.
  • I was unable to attend the meeting. How was it?
  • I am so sorry not to have been able to go; familial responsibilities kept me home. But if there is a way to add my voice, by phone, e-mail, or letter, please let me know. Thanks.
  • well...

MeggieC & I showed up but no one else did...
spoke to Community Board 8 this morning,
they are not sure why it didn't happen, hopefully we will get an answer on that.

but i did have a long discussion with Det. Raton and this is what i came away with:
    • crime on Franklin & Nostrand is an extremely high priority for the precinct
the stats posted here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/pdf/chfdept/cs077pct.pdf are a major tool in determining how priorties are made
community involvement is welcome, this means both calling the precinct to report incidents as well getting involved through community board 8
it is important to stay involved even when it "appears" that things are "under control. just like weight loss, dramatic highs and lows are less indicative of overall progress than is a steady decline over time (my analogy) we have had a steady decline of crime in this neighborhood, the point is to keep that trend going
i also spoke with community board 8 this morning
    their next monthly meeting is:

    Thursday, October 12, 2006, 7:30 PM
Berean Missionary Baptist Church / 1641 Bergen Street b/t Utica and Rochester Avenues
for anyone looking to get involved on this level i think this is something to attend

the police committee (whose meeting we attempted to attend last night) functions as a laison between the community and the precinct, i am not clear on how this overlaps with the precinct community council and which is the more effective group.

reinstating the impact zone is one of the highest priorities for community board 8, they fully recognize the increase in crime during the period that we have been with out it. The mayor's office & the police commissioner need to be targeted. I will draft a sample letter over the weekend and post it with contact information so that anyone who feels strongly on this can quickly write a letter.
  • The District Attorney's Office should be sent a copy of that letter to. From what I understand they conduct crime investigations as well. I would send it to Charles Hynes himself. I don't know the name of the young lady who comes to the meetings from his office but I would also send her a copy. I'm sure the community board should know her name.
  • Subject: IMPORTANT MEETINGS

In light of the discussions on these threads:
    http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5502
    http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5004
I am posting the following meetings:
    • Community Board 8 police committee meeting WILL take place:
      Thursday (10/5) at 7 pm
77th Pct - 127 Utica Avenue (at Bergen)
    • 77th Precinct Community Council meeting
      Monday (10/9) at 7:30
Sacred Heart Church - 938 Bergen Street (corner of Franklin)
I don’t know which is the most effective committee to be dealing with,
so I intend to go to both
The talking we do amongst ourselves is good for clarifying issues but I think we need to take these feelings from the virtual into the real world.
  • Subject: LETTER WRITING

    Below is a sample letter,
the more you can individualize it the better,
but sending it as is, is better than not sending anything at all
    Please send copies to:
    • The Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg
      City Hall
      New York, NY 10007
    • Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly
      New York City Police Department
      One Police Plaza
      New York, NY 10038

(if you want to send something short & sweet, the commissioner has the following email form set up: http://www.nyc.gov/html/mail/html/mailnypd.html)
    • Kings County District Attorney, Charles J. Hynes
      Kings County District Attorney's Office
      350 Jay St. Brooklyn,
      New York, NY 11201
    with a copy to:
    • Saadia Adossa
      Kings County District Attorney's Office
      Community Relations
350 Jay St. Brooklyn, room 429A
      New York, NY 11201
new address please also send a copy to:
    • Doris Alexander
      District Manager
      Community Board 8
      1291 St. Marks Ave.
      Brooklyn, NY 11213
so that the Community Board is aware of what our concerns are and that the community is getting involved

Re: Operation Impact for North Crown Heights

As a resident of North Crown Heights, I am writing in response to the recent spike in gun activity in my neighborhood. In addition to the shootings that claimed the lives of Damon Allen (the “hero” sanitation worker) and Kevin Faryind, there has been an alarming rise in the amount of gun fire reported by the community. We have been assured by the 77th precinct that Franklin and Nostrand Avenues (between Lincoln and St Marks) are areas of prime concern. At the last Community Council meeting, Inspector O’Connell informed us that he would again be applying in November to have this area be a part of Operation Impact. I believe this is an essential step in reducing the level of street crime in this area.

While I can greatly appreciate that we are only one of many needy areas in the city, there has been considerable effort made here in the past with extremely positive results; we can not be allowed to slip backwards. This community has had a long struggle with crime, guns and drugs but it has improved steadily over the years. This sharp rise in gun activity and the threat it poses to the safety of us, our families and our homes is of great concern. This community is made up of both newcomers and older residents coming together to keep our homes and our families safe. I urge you to consider how fragile the environment we are dealing with is, we are NOT out of the woods yet and we need the continued support of NYPD to help us see this through.

Guns are not a joke, random gun fire is not a joke and an overall perception of lawlessness this activity promotes can quickly send this area back into the drug infested, crime ridden strip that it was not very long ago.

    Sincerely,
  • Is this NYPD "watch tower" still on Carroll St, or was that a temporary thing?
    http://www.crownheights.info/index.php?itemid=3319

the Brooklyn version on NY1, News12 is runnning a story today about teen mugging in CH
    http://www.news12.com/BK/topstories/article?id=183214
  • So whats going on with this? Are they going to make the 77th precinct an impact zone again? I sent in my letters. How many others did the same? We need to come out in large numbers.
  • Watch the News12 story --- find the typo!

  • operation impact is a program that assigns graduating rookies to the 12 neediest (most crime ridden) areas in the city,
therefore the assignments change every 6 months
it is basically crime statistics that determine where the zones will be

both inspector o'connell (commanding officer at the 77) and community board 8 have stated that the community should address our concerns about police presence to both the mayor and the police commissioner

    PLEASE
    anyone who did send letters
District Attorney Hynes is interested in meeting with us, but i understand that many people did not include their phone numbers. could you please pm me with contact information if you are interested in meeting with him
(and i suppose even if you didn't send a letter but really are interested in discussing the situation it wouldn't hurt)

I have made a petition version of the letter and started getting signatures at the community board 8 meeting last night. i will also have it at the crow hill association meeting:

    Tuesday, October 17th, 2006 @ 7:30 p.m.
    Haitian-American Daycare Center
    1491 Bedford Ave., Bklyn, NY
