Why Crown Heights rocks — Brooklynian

Why Crown Heights rocks

I was making a furtive late night run to get supplies while I bunker down for Stove Drama - Day FOUR. On Nostrand, there is a little tavern called Q and I heard this Voice coming out of it so I went to it to check it out. Immediately, this woman comes out of the bar. "Come in! Come in! It's Karaoke night! It's so much fun!" She drags me into the bar and it's this tiny hole in the wall with practically no one in it. Though the guy singing was really good, I have to say. I had to beg off because I'm still sick. (If I'm breaking out in a sweat on a cool night like this, I'm not well yet.) Still, she had a GREAT vibe 8) so I promised that I would come for Karaoke NEXT Tuesday which is also my birthday.

Anyway, this chance encounter cheered me up.

And it seems my birthday plans are laid. Why don't y'all come down next Tuesday to Q (Nostrand bet. Lincoln Place and St. John's) and celebrate with me and my new friend? Just don't count my gray hairs.

  • Subject: ripple bar

That was Ripple Bar, and the woman was probably Andre (not sure if that's the right spelling). She's really lovely!
  • Ripple is on Washington, Not Nostrand. And she already said the bar is called Q.
  • So are y'all coming or what?
  • That place is a serious dump!!! I heard Verns Happiness Lounge is really nice though.
1 shot dead, 1 critical at Brooklyn bar
    Saturday, September 15th 2007, 4:00
A man was killed and another gravely wounded during a shooting outside a Brooklyn bar early yesterday, police said.

Roainiera Salcedo, 20, of Brooklyn was shot in the chest outside 1454 St. Johns Place in Crown Heights at 2:24 a.m. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he died about 3:30 a.m., police said.

A second man, Rigoberto Griffith, 19, of Brooklyn was shot in the abdomen and leg. He was in critical condition at Kings County.

Police said both men had attended a party at a nearby bar.

Investigators believe one of the partygoers shot both men. The motive was not clear last night.

Police interviewed several bar patrons yesterday. No arrests were made.
  • Eh. I never said it was anything more than a hole in the wall. I was just responding to the friendliness of the people there. All I'm planning to do is drink seltzer (can't drink because I'm allergic to alcohol) and sing a little karaoke. It's not like I was planning major fireworks for my birthday. And considering that I'm pretty much broke from my recent move, it's about all I can afford to do.

So you don't have to come if you're going to piss all over the proceedings.

Anyone else willing to be a good sport and celebrate with a new neighbor?
  • Thanks for the buzzkill of the crime stat KWAK.
    1. That bar is in the not-so-nice part of St. John's Place.

    2. I have no intention of staying out so late on a work night. I'll probably be wrapping it up and going home no later than 11.

    3. The bar I mentioned is on Nostrand. Are you saying that I should celebrate elsewhere because of a crime that happened blocks away? Or that all bars in Crown Heights are unsafe even though I have no intention of staying out until 2 AM?

I mean, geesh, how was that at all relevant?
  • Q is fine. I live right around the corner from there. I've stopped in there from time to time, and have always found them to be very kind and friendly. I have other plans for that night, but hopefully you will have a great time. They generally seem to get a big crowd for the Karaoke nights as it gets later.
  • KWAK is a policeman (I think) so that's why he states the facts. I'm sure he wasn't trying to ruin your plans.
I do hope people are able to make your party tonight. I'm out of the area or else I would be there.
Have a special birthday and sing your heart out!
  • Well, crime stats are lovely if they are *relevant*.

If he wanted to discourage me from going to Q by quoting any crime that occurred there, that would have been another thing entirely.
  • Well, I went last night and had a good time. Things really didn't get going until 11:30. I met quite a few nice people and some old geezer tried to pick me up. I changed my seat when he got too obnoxious. I didn't sing though because at that hour I was coughing pretty badly and realized that I didn't have the lung power to even attempt Lauryn Hill's Ex-Factor. (I can't wait until I'm completely over this flu! Ack!)

At midnight, I turned into a pumpkin and went home. On the way home, I met a woman who was doing the same thing I was, walking briskly to her building. But she still took the time to greet me:

"How are you this fine evening?"
    "Just fine. How are you?"
    "I'm fine. Thanks for asking!"

Of course, by the time we finished this exchange, we were a half a block away from each other in opposite directions because we were both walking so fast. :D

The people at Q were great, and I'll be back, though not as a regular. It's sort of silly for me to be a regular at a bar when I don't drink.
  • I am so gald you had a nice time, I must have past by Q a million times and never knew it was there until I read your earlier blog.
    Belated birthday wishes.
  • Although you had a nice time at the bar,and by the way Happy Birthday. I don't find your post out of the ordinary, nor example of how "Crown Heights Rocks" your quoting of a basic exchange of words in this great city is far from unusual. It makes me wonder what you're presumptions of Crown Heights were/are and it's residents. Your story is defenitley a far cry from the usual whinney posts on here, but a person sayin Hi to you on the street and inviting you into a bar in my opinion does not make Crown Heights Rock. Did anyone else on this board get that same impression? or am I just typing before my coffee kicked in.
P.S. This is not an attack, just an observation.
  • lilb's experience may not be earth-shattering, but hey, it's nice to hear about someone enjoying the neighborhood once in a while, no?

as to her expectations, isn't it pretty normal to be nervous about moving to any new place? isn't it always cheering to be welcomed?
  • interesting. I'll add Q to the list of places to go next CH bar crawl, which I need to get to work on. but no tuesdays, sorry. cattyshack charity poker night trumps everything!
  • I always like to hear nice stories, this board and the prospect heights forum could use some. I just don't think that someone saying Hi on the street and dragging someone into a bar is extraordinary. Also the why i'm not scared of Crown Heights thread was annoying too!
  • Well, geesh, CH is different in how open people are. I lived in Astoria for 11 years, and people are not that friendly with each other.

This sort of thing never happened in my old neighborhood. And while it's not a bad neighborhood and I had friends there, it also could be a pretty isolating experience, because of the typical big-city attitude. I think it's nice that you have small-town friendliness here.

And no, it's not an earth-shattering experience. And had it not happened on that particular day when I was having a REALLY bad day, I probably wouldn't have posted about it. I posted because it really did cheer me up when I badly needed some cheering up.

As far as the other thread, I just was posting because I got really sick of people asking me if I was afraid to live here. And I dug up something in my past that showed that I had been in far worse danger before. I thought it was cute. It backfired. And considering to the level I'd been attacked, I was seriously thinking about not coming back to this board.

As enthusiastic as I am, I'm NOT a Pollyanna. I admit I was at first apprehensive about moving here, so maybe I'm gushing with relief that it's not as bad as I feared and in many ways is cooler than I expected. 8) I still invested in a deadbolt. I still observe big city ways for safe passage. I believe in being cautious and alert, but I REFUSE to be paranoid! I may sound naive, but I have too much experience of living in big cities and not-so-safe neighborhoods to actually be naive. Is it so bad that I've found things about my new neighborhood I enjoy?

I can't do anything about crime except to observe safety rules, getting involved and calling the police when necessary. I see little point in bemoaning it. If there is something I can do about the situation, I'll do it, but kvetching about it here doesn't seem to accomplish much. (OTOH, kvetching at precinct and community board meetings might accomplish something!)

Now if y'all want to meet some Sunday night for Karaoke at Q, I'm up for it! :)
  • Of course I read this too late. Happy Birthday Lil' B.

What's the cross street for Q? I didn't see it stated but if it is and I missed it, please don't yell at me. :D

I do love me some Karoake though.
  • It's on Nostrand between Lincoln Place and St. John's.
  • Seriously? That's right around the corner and I've never even noticed it. Jeez.
  • Yeah, it's a tiny hole in the wall that only opens at night. The girl who bartends is real sweet.
  • Nice!

Hey, what's with the ho-jillion cop cars I saw screaming past the Grand Army Plaza about a half hour ago??
  • Subject: Q tavern

I live round the corner from Q, and have had similarly good experiences....once it kicks off (usually not til 11pm).....
