Do you have to already know how to knit? Or is this a lesson?
-
Hey mixergirl, no these are not classes. It's a knitting circle for people who already knit, including beginners. And if you are a beginner it's actually a good way to learn more through observation (English, German, Greek, left-handed, right-handed) and asking a few questions (closing a hat, binding-off).
Knit-a-Way on Atlantic and Stitch Therapy on Lincoln both have knitting classes and paid learning circles. The later is cheaper. You can also go to KnittingHelp.com's Basic Techniques page for how-to videos:

P & S Fabrics and Yarns Update
I had a meeting in the area last week and I noticed that P & S Fabrics has now moved across the street to 360 Broadway (btw. Franklin and Leonard). I have not been in, I may stop by tomorrow (same meeting). The phone number is still the same but the web site is outdated.
Tel: (212) 226-1534/1572
P & S Update 09/25/07: Same stock, same yarns, same everything. How they got two floors of stuff to fit into one space is a small miracle. -
Subject: Projects?
Hello knitting kninjas,
According to our Meetup.com scheduler Knit PH at Maha's is full, with 7 "yes" and 4 "maybe". Bring your yarn people.
I got a few e-mails asking for starter project suggestions. Quit smoking, or at least try. A scarf is a good warm-up project. Just think of it as a very long expensive pot holder. Here's a handsome tweed stitch scarf I found on Knitty.com. Check out Henry by Mareike Sattler.

What the hell is going with fall? The only sign that it's here are the leaves turning brown and hipsters wearing more that two layers of t-shirts.
Knit PH had a nice small group at Maha's. check out this art project from Tomo: Arm Chairs. She made four sleeves in two hours. Tomo's making 35 chairs.
Prospect Perk has a good sign up for Thursday Oct. 11. But there's still tons of room at Freddy's for October 21. Freddy's has table seating for about 40 people, "interesting" decor, cheap beer & box wine, excellent dirty martinis, and of course knitting. Always available on this night: yarn swift, winder, yardage counter. NOTE: This October 21, Knit PH meets at Freddy's from 6:30 to 8:30. Git with the knit. -
Subject: Gail Rothschild
You know who rocks? Local fine artists and avid rock climber Gail Rothschild. Her work focuses on the knitted fabric. These works are not drawn from life. Instead Gail collects and studies swatches and then composes each loop and stitch. These vary in size from small studies and large wall-size pieces.
The Difficult Synthesis of Indigo
Arches paper, watercolor, gouache. 40" x 26"

Gail also teaches rock climbing at Chelsea Piers. In her studio she has a sculpted practice-section mounted over her doorway. She demonstrated it for me hanging by her finger tips for a minute or two. She does this between drawing and painting, otherwise she'd climb a wall. -
Subject: Red Hooking
Hey fans of Sunny's in Redhook Brooklyn and Redhookers that knit. I'm posting this for Tracey Balzano (Sunny's daughter), she is organizing Redhooks first bar-based Stitch n' Bitch. If you don't know what or where Sunny's is, I'm afraid you're just not cool enough to go. Cheers Tracey B., best of luck to you and yours.
Beginning on October 17, there will be an informal knitting group meeting at Sunny's Bar in Red Hook.
The group will meet every Wednesday from 8:30-11:00 PM. The group will continue until December 19. We know that reason says don't mix imbibing with knitting but we do throw a bit of caution to the wind. Instruction will be available early in the evening so beginners are welcome. You will need to bring your own supplies.
Sunny’s Bar is located at 253 Conover Street (between Beard and Reed streets) around the corner from Fairway.

Subject: The Beeton Path

What in the Victorian hell is this?
Long before Martha, there was Isabella Beeton, A Victorian era Domestic maven. Her books and publications such as “Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management” and “The English Woman’s Domestic Magazine” made every British woman the Queen of her household. She advised women that “as with the commander of an army, or the leader of any enterprise, so it is with the mistress of a house.” She kicked Victorian ass and rocked the anitmacassar!
But as with Martha, that silver lining had a tarnished edge. Beeton had a brilliantly celebrated life, but after a series of miscarriages her life ended abruptly. In the PBS production Kathryn Hughes' "The Short Life and Long Times of Mrs. Beeton" she speculates that the reason for Beeton’s disastrous obstetric history might have been due to syphilis, contracted from her wandering husband, Sam. Sadly she died at the age of 28 at childbirth. Now That’s Vitctorian! Project Gutenberg has made her life’s work available online. For antimacassers, face veils, tobacco bags, knee braces and other unearthed knitting arcana check out “BEETON'S BOOK OF NEEDLEWORK” on Gutenberg.org:
http://www.gutenberg.org/dirs/1/5/1/4/15147/15147-h/15147-h.htm#page_289
Speaking of the knitting arcana, Knit PH at Freddy's still has lots of room this Sunday, October 21, so far we have 8 people signed in via Meetup.com. This month we meet from 6:30 until 8:30 or until some band shows up and kicks us out.To make the small crochet flower basket above, follow these arcane instructions.239.--Small Crochet Basket.Materials: 2 balls of closely-covered white and silver, and 1 ball of pink and silver twine; a crochet needle. For the bottom: Make a chain of 4 stitches and unite it, work 3 long, 3 chain, and repeat three times more.2nd round:Work 3 long into the 1st 3 chain, make 3 chain, work 3 long [200] into the next 3 chain, make 3 chain, work 3 long into the same place, make 3 chain, and repeat.3rd round: 3 long, 3 chain, working twice into the 3 chain of last round.4th round: 3 long, 3 chain, increasing in every other 3rd chain by working twice into it.5th round: Increasing in every 3rd chain, repeat. For the leaves: Make a chain of 32 stitches, then work a row of 1 long stitch and 1 chain stitch with the silver twine.2nd round: Work 1 long stitch into each chain stitch in 1st row, make 1 chain stitch, repeat. (At the point, make 4 long, with a chain stitch between each), repeat on the other side of the chain, 1 long stitch and 1 chain stitch alternately.3rd round: With pink: Work over a wire in double crochet 1 stitch into each loop, work 15 more leaves in the same way, join each leaf half way, then sew it to the centre, work a row of double crochet 1 yard in length, and twist it for the handle. This should also be crocheted over wire. -
Subject: Weather or not
ASK/ANSWER
Q: What is the difference bewtween a skein and a hank?
A: Both are loosely wound wheels of yarn, but a skein is a unit if measure (yds/ms).
Q: Is a Soy Silk natural "green" yarn?
A: Not so much, you damn hippes! The Dupont trademark process (Supro®) of extracting and polymerizing soy protein creates a product known as "viscose". This commercial product has a large carbon foot print, but it does feel really nice.
I can't blame soy yarn for the melting polar ice caps, but if this warm weather keeps up I'll have a beach front apartment. Weather or not, Knit PH is Stricken at Freddy's Bar tonight. I'll have some tools of the trade on hand. So stop by, knit, crochet, or just pop in to get your hanks in gear for winter. The large tables are perfect for blankets, sweaters and junk. Available on this night: swift, wool winder, yardage counter.
What? Knit PH
Where? Freddy's Bar & Backroom, 485 Dean street
When? Sunday Oct, 21 from 6:30 to 8:30. Then a band kicks us out.
Or stick around for the original stylings of Joy Dragland and Andrew Sullivan, acoustic-late-60's Jersey City metaphoric music at 9:00.
POST KNIT SHOUT OUT:
Tomo, congratulations on the arm chairs exhibit, they look great! Suketena mina wa! Honto ne! Anata ni the Noro yarn. send me pics. Eric and Edna, thanks for hiking it all the way from Queens! The conversation was light and the knitting mood was warm. Suzanne, now you have to tell your son that Freddy's is your bar now. Rock the sock and see you on opera night. Bartender Katie, thanks for the music, I owe you a scarf. And to all, good luck and good knit . -

Subject: Sweaters in History
The Wrath of Raglan
War: a necessary evil — but in its wake necessity gives birth to innovation. Canned food kept French troops alive during the Napoleonic Wars (1795). The Pacific War (1945) gave us Japanese transistor radio technology. And of course The Vietnam War (1975) gave us Vietnamese restaurants.
FitzRoy James Henry Somerset, the 1st Baron Raglan (September 30, 1788 – June 28, 1855) was a promising young soldier who rose through the ranks to become an infamous British General. As a younger man Baron Raglan lost his right arm at the Battle of Waterloo, after which he assumed a long secretarial career with the Duke of Wellington. Later in his career, he was promoted to Field Marshal, which proved to have been his great undoing. At age 64 Lord Raglan was appointed to lead England through a Crimean winter campaign against the Russians. After the loss of his right arm, Lord Raglan's tailor created a new style of over coat with innovative sleeves that taper from the body and converged diagonally at 45 degrees to the neckline. This shoulderless construction made dressing much easier for a less-able man. Lord Raglan later outfitted his own troops with pullover sweaters that used the same signature sleeve design.
As war progressed, it became obvious to his comrades that he lacked the ability to coherently command his troops. Camp conditions grew unsanitary and food rations ran low. Although Lord Raglan fought well at Alma and Inkerman he is notably blamed for his tragic failure in the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava. Lord Raglan brought certain defeat on his weary British soldiers as he orderred them to charged directly into the Russians. This legendary blunder made a bitter enemy of his long-time friend Lieutenant-General James Brudenell, the 7th Earl of Cardigan. But that’s another sweater story.
In the summer of 1855 Lord Raglan succumed to dysentery at the age of 67 while at battle. But in the end he left us a legacy of an easy-going sweater with a casual sporty appeal. Originally known as the FitzRoy Jersey, it is now known as the Raglan. So who really won the war? You don't get hot chicks with a stupid cardigan, do ya now.

Subject: Worst, Worster, Worsted
Worst, Worster, Worsted
In the US the ounce is both a unit of meausure for volume and weight. The rest of the world uses units of liter and gram. The American Standard ounce is differentiated as "fl. oz." for liquid volume, and "oz." for weight.
If that's not confusing enough, the word "worsted" is used to describe a type of yarn and a unit of measure. The word comes from the town of Worsthead, England, which produced a stiff smooth yarn with a tight twist. It is combed and spun from the straighter wool fibers. Single ply worsted yarns are ideal for weaving gabradine and other thick fabrics.
Worsted Weight Yarns vary in thickness depending on the brand and material. It falls into the "medium weight" category. They can be made of 3 to 6 plies of yarn, or spun from one large highly twisted strand refered to as a "Worsted Yarn".
Worsted Yarns are made from the longer, straight strands of wool that have been combed and twisted tightly. They are not as warm or soft as merino yarns, but they are more durable and they tend not to felt. Brown Sheep and Lopi are typical brands of worsted yarn. -
Subject: Never Look Back in Angora
Never Look Back in Angora
Angora is a fiber from the Turkish capital of Ankara dating back to 13th century. It's made from the fur of the long-haired Angora Rabbits. ARBA (America Rabbit Breeders Association) recognizes four breeds of this luxury Lapin: English, French, Satin, and Giant — each varying in degrees of cuteness. The Giant Angora Rabbit is prized for its its ability to produce three types of wool from it's fur — Underwool, Awn Fluff, and Awn vary in flufferocity. 100% Angora Rabbit yarn is hand-spun due to its "slick" quality. Commercially, it is spun with up to 30% merino wool, or run with nylon or cotton chord to give it tensile strength.
Gimme Mo' Hair
The word "mohair" is derived from "mukhayyar", a type of head covering worn by the Arab men. It is spun from the hair of the the Turkish Angora Goat. Angora and Mohair conjure glamorous images of the1950's sweater girl or starlets like Lana Turner. But during WWII, the U.S. Government subsidized wool and mohair production to outfit our military. The Angora/Mohair/Wool blends were used in blankets, uniforms, bomber jackets and socks. It kept our troupes fabulously warm and dry.
The Turks also bred a variety of domestic cat also known as the Angora. This fuzzy feline is not used for fiber, but there's a crazy old lady who has made a winter wardrobe from a these lazy lap creatures. -

What's wrong with this picture?
Here's some knitting inspiration for you: the movie "Ordinary People" (1980). Say hello to the Jarret family, from left to right: Beth (Mary Tyler Moore), Conrad (Timothy Hutton), and Calvin (Donald Sutherland) — not pictured, Bud. The movie was based on the book by Judith Guest and was directed by Robert Redford. Fabulous cashmere casuals cover fragile human flaws in this fall-wear flick. It introduced America to words such as "grief counseler", "disfunctional", "enabler", "crew neck", "yoke collar" and "cardigan". Look at the family portrait above, you can drive a car between Beth and Conrad. Poor Calvin, he doesn't realize that camel doesn't go with everything and his family is falling apart!
After your done watching this DVD, you'll want to make a sweater or settle family issues.
Ordinary Sweaters
Speaking of stricken families, Knit PH has knitting all laid out for December, so get your garne in gear. There's still time for a gift hat.

Subject: Mens' Crewneck
Put This on Your Wish List
Conrad Jarret is wearing a classic grey crewneck pullover. It can be worn casually with denim for tree trimming, or tucked neatly under a blazer for a proper Holiday dinner with family. It might be the only sweater a guy will ever need. Here's the front.
Now here's the back. The crewneck collar has a modest boyish appeal, it almost says "hug me". The alternating cable-rib pattern is very understated, but with out it this box-cut structure simply blends into the wall. For comfort and versatility you can't beat a crewneck. Good choice Conrad!

This is the prefect gift to give avid knitters — so they can make you a sweater. "Never Knit Your Man a Sweater (Unless You've Got the Ring)" by Judith Durant (Storey Books): all the designs are well thought out. The instructions are clear and the patterns are erata free. Among the vests, hats, and socks there's a classic cotton crewneck (p. 129) that every guy will want. But guys, beware. This subversive gift may not be a win-win situation. -

Subject: The Classic Cardigan
Cardigan: A Bloody War, A Bloody Nice Sweater
Bold, understated authority — that's what this sweater is all about. In the movie "Ordinary People" Dr. Tyrone C. Berger (Judd Hirsch) is Conrad Jarret's (Timothy Hutton) sympathetic psychiatrist. In this scene Dr. Burger shoulders the burden of Calvin Jarret who wanted to discuss Conrad's disintegrating relationship with his mother, Beth. In doing so Calvin found he was there for himself — all in the first 10 minutes. Now that's good a therapist! This oversized shawl-collar Cardgian is great for softening broad shoulders or obscuring a vein-popping-sobbing neck. It's as cool and as reliable as Dr. Berger himself.
Although the Cardigan sweater has an approachable appeal, it has a darker side — worn as British military garb in the bloody battle of the Crimea (1853-1856). The tragedy... the gore... the clean neat lines that met at a buttoned facing.
Named after Gen. James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, the worsted knit Cardigan Jacket found its way to the front during the Charge of the Light Brigade. Although British Army officers were valiantly outfitted, the Crimean War went fabulousy wrong. Fashion designer Coco Channel revived the Cardigan's popularity with a women's soft two-piece suit (circa 1925) but it was children's TV host Fred Rogers who influenced Generation Text — one button at a time. He convinced them that they were special by just being them, so they now have no real goals in life other than being themselves and posting on Youtube. Nice going Fred, you S.O.B., you were a terrible liar.
