2-3 week old kitten - HELP! — Brooklynian

2-3 week old kitten - HELP!

edited November -1 in Brooklyn Pets
The guy (Richie) who owns the corner store across the street from me had a 2-3 week old kitten tonight. His cousin said someone gave it to him and sent it over in a cab. When I saw the kitten I told Richie it would die if it didn't get help and needed to be fed every few hours. So, I now have a baby kitten sleeping in my shirt. It was too late to get kitten formula so I made an emergency one out of milk, egg yolks, and corn oil. S/he ate some of it out of a syringe and Ripley "helped" the baby pee by licking it's butt. Of course, it peed all over my pants. And I think it has fleas!

I'm going to get kitten formula tomorrow but what do I do about the fleas? I'm going to put the baby in a box with a blanket and some bottles of hot water tonight (no heating pad). S/he is also pretty smelly. I need any advice or help. Anyone have a nursing mom who might be willing to adopt another baby? Help! I've never had a kitten this young before.

Thanks guys!

  • Well, for the smell, you could give it a quick bath with some baby shampoo. Just make sure you dry it very well so it doesn't get sick.
  • Try calling one of the cat rescues to look for a lactating mom. I've found new babies before and took it to a friends cat who had kittens and she accepted it without a second thought. I just had to promise to find it a home when the time came and I did.
The flea thing is tricky cause it's so young. Talk to your vet about that one.
    Good luck
  • oh caseopele, you really ARE a magnet for lost animals, aren't you?

:elephant: :pig: :cat: 8-[ :cat: :fish: :fish:
  • Make sure your other kitties/dogs get a fresh flea collar so that you can ward off a possible infestation. Have you talked to any vet yet?

Oh sweetie, you are such an angel. Please keep us posted.
  • She really is a special lady
  • ooooo, teeny kitty! You're so amazing for taking care of this baby and all of the others. Please keep us posted on her progress.
  • Ok, the baby is sleeping now in his box. I got the formula from Acme today, along with a syringe to feed him. Off topic but I've been in Acme several times and the guy there has never been friendly, what's his deal?

Everything cost about $30 which Richie is giving me store credit for. The baby ate twice today, I made him pee after and he seems to be doing good. As I was leaving Acme, I met a guy who stopped to see the kitten. It turns out that he had been wanting to get a kitten, he has a cat and a 9 year old daughter. He was going to check out the rescue groups but saw me with the baby. He also has experience with bottle feeding kittens, he said he did it with one of his cats and the cat lived to be 23. I have his number and I'm going to give him a call. As much as I love kitties, I just don't have the time to care for this kitten. Today was crazy, I had to take the dogs with me to get the formula, feed the baby, clean up because I had a couple coming over to look at my fosters. Then someone came to replace my bathroom sink. I'm exhausted and haven't had a good night's sleep in about 6 days.

This doesn't all have to do with the kitten, I've just been stressed out. I realized that in the almost 7 years I've been at my job, I've had maybe 2 weeks of vacation time. All of the things that bother me about my job that I'm normally able to ignore or at least deal with seem to be driving me insane now. And there are several factors making it difficult for me to take any time off now. Anyway, I'm going to call this guy tonight and ask leozoeypiper what she thinks. I'll keep you guys updated, here's some pics and a video in the meantime. And you guys are making me blush with the compliments!

  • such a cute weee wittle thing :).
  • ack! cuteness! sooooooo cute. I hope this guy works out to be a good match
  • Wow! Cute, but waaaay too young to be away from its mommy. Caseopele, you're the best.

Those little squeaks on the video made both of my cats come running over to the computer in total alarm. Heh.
  • I did bring up a great daughter didn't I!!!!!
  • Jesebellalina, if you're Caseopele's Mom you deserve to be so very proud of her and her compassion. Hey....and see that I'm not the only Mom on this site checking things out.
The video was just too adorable. When I played it our German Shepherd, Dakota and our muttley, Sage woke right up and came to see what was making such a tiny meowing noise.
I hope the guy is real in taking on the baby and you get a bit of a break.
Hope things calm down for you soon.

    She's the bestest :-)
  • amazing!

one thing I've used, if you can get it, is pennyroyal oil. if you douse some cotton balls in it and kinda place them under something (so the kitten can't suck the oil or anything - it's toxic), the fleas will flee. growing up, my mom and I used this pretty often when one of our feral cats would need to come in to give birth. we'd put the oil on cotton balls under the towel we'd line their box with and eventually the fleas would flee.
  • Yes I am Caseopele's mom!!!! Very very proud of her. We have such a great relationship which I treasure and feel so lucky. Now if she would only win the LOTTO!! If so, she would probably have one of the biggest no-kill animal shelters. Then she really would not get any sleep!
  • Wow - good work, Caseopele! And what a beauty the little one is! I fostered a pregnant semi feral back in April and I remember when her babies were that age---one eye barlely open...so cute!

How have things panned out with the potentially interested guy? I don't know of any lactating momma cats right now, but I do know of one about to give birth any day now...I could look into this if you are interested...
  • Well, this is one very lucky kitty who's sleeping in a little basket on my desk right now. Catherine, the owner of the Community Bookstore, fell in love with him immediately and will be adopting him as the store kitty! He couldn't have found a better mommy. He's been eating like a pig, sleeping, and he started pooping today. If shishkab reads this I'm a bit worried about the color of his poop. It's a little orangey, is that bad?

He came to work with me today and spent the night in my shirt. Almost every customer oohed and ahhed over him. My boss is awesome for letting me bring him to work AND I'm getting my week off! Paid! I'll post more updates, hopefully I'll get some more sleep tonight. Thanks guys!
  • And let me add that my mom is teh awesome, I love her!
  • Hooray for the kitten! Sounds like a good place for him too - he'll get lots of attention from customers. Bravo for all of your patience and efforts to help him!
  • OMG, both my kitties came running over when I played that video. heh.
Now monkey-cat has attached herself to my arm again. oy.
  • Subject: wow

omg that kitten is sooo cute

Yeah the guy at Acme Pets is definitely not friendly--no idea what his deal is either!

make sure to tell your boss that this was a great business decision. i've never been to the shop (i don't live in PS), but i now plan to stop by and get something when i'm in the area.

oh, but fwiw, the acme guy has always seemed nice to me. low-key, but nice. maybe it's because i'm rolling on the floor with knuckles (the ginger tom). anyway, just in case someone is reading this later, i'd feel bad leaving the impression that he's a horrible guy.

I have to agree with Sweet's description - more of a low key type of guy. But the teens that work there are super sweet and extremely helpful.
Plus I tend to spend more time playing with Knuckles too.
  • Subject: Agreed!

GREAT business decision! I live in the area and had actually never heard of the community bookstore - just looked it up and it looks wonderful. I will definitely be coming by to see the kitty and buy something.

Caseopele, the orange poop is OK (i'm pretty sure). I think thats the color early on in poopdom.
  • What's the address of the Community Bookstore?
  • The kitten is going to the vet today at 12:30 with Catherine. She'll bring him back to me after since I've gotten into a routine with him and things are much easier. His name is Mumpus (not sure of the spelling) after a character in a book, quite appropriate for a bookstore kitty. He's doing pretty good, eating, sleeping, peeing and pooping. I think he's getting a bit stronger, not so shaky when he walks. I don't know how people do this on a regular basis though, rescuing and bottle feeding kittens then giving them up for adoption. I didn't realize how attached I was getting to him until he spent a few hours at the bookstore yesterday. I missed my baby!

Kitteh will be available to accept visitors today after he gets back from the vet (maybe 2pm) until 7 tonight. The address for the bookstore is 143 7th Avenue and we're right next door in the wine store. Come by and see him if you can!
  • Ack, dakota I just saw your response about the bebeh's poop. Thank you, I was such a worried mum. His poop looks sort of normal now (I can't say I know exactly what kitten poop is supposed to look like). He's eating like a pig, his little teeth are coming in, and he keeps trying to explore. Unfortunately, he tries to do it when we're walking to work! I tried to interest him in some yummy canned food but he wanted nothing to do with it. Oh, and the vet said he looks good but he's too little to take blood and do any tests. Anyway, pics!
