What's with all the crime in FG/CH?
Subject: What's with all the crime in FG/CH?
After our 2nd murder in the CH/FG area in the last week, I have to wonder what is going on. I recently moved here from Westchester and love the area and the people. I am sick of the attitude that because we live in a city, we should expect crime. People are being mugged in broad daylight, drug dealers are hanging out on street corners, and now, people are getting shot. Where are the police? I NEVER see police in the area (I live on Clinton Ave) other than at the G train station. Am I naive to think that they should be walking the streets during the day and night? Should I not expect them to hire more police if the current number cannot handle all of the crime? I am so frustrated because I have lived in many areas in the Northeast and I know it doesn't have to be like this. I shouldn't be afraid to walk around after 9 pm.Comments

I hear ya. Increased foot patrols would be nice. I have long felt that squad cars are the epitome of reactionary policing. They show up AFTER something has happened. Beat cops get to know areas, people, patterns, and events. They also serve as a deterrent. Which politician would raise taxes to fund hiring more cops? I would pay the higher tax, but would any politician take the career risk that others would pay it too? -
I moved here from the Lower East Side last year; I lived there twelve years.
Over those twelve years I saw the number of foot patrols drop; we had the highest number of foot patrols when I first moved in, when the neighborhood was still "not quite gentrified". Then as the demographic changed, the foot patrols ebbed, until by the time I moved out, I rarely saw any.
Interestingly, the reason I felt safer when I first moved in wasn't because of the cops -- it was because the people on my block clearly all knew each other and kept an eye on things. The storekeepers on the block would nod and say hello when they saw me, even when they weren't in the store, but just walking down the street. They knew me, but Wylie Dufresne didn't know me from Eve; so I didn't feel as safe after the place had been "transformed." -
A murder in the Whitman projects north of FG Park and a drug dealer killing someone formerly involved in the drug trade does not equate "all this crime" in my book. In fact, it's hardly surprising. Sad and a shock, but not surprising. There were more drug dealers on the same corners 5 years ago than now.
Crime in the projects has always been bad. More crackdown and policing of dealing generally would help. This all goes back to the drug trade imo.
I have lived here for over 5 years and never feel unsafe. Just be aware as you walk around, same as if you were walking around on the LES or in the Village. Talk to your neighbors, know what goes on. Call 911 if you see something illegal, report quality of life issues promptly and often to 311, go to your precint meetings and raise issues that you have.
However, hysteria over teenagers in the projects shooting one another or a drug dealer killing someone who used to be (and might still have been) involved in the drug trade, does not amount ot some overarching trend. It is extemely worrisome and needs to be dealt with so that innocents do not get caught in the crossfire. Foot patrols would do a lot for that on the trouble blocks or corners. -
You can see lots of police at the precinct crowded around the donuts or the pizza depending on the time of day. I think they are scared to come out or don't want to be bothered, but visit the precinct and tell me if I am wrong.

Come on. That's a bit much don't ya think.
Are you sure you're not Oiseu in disguise. Now that guy's a cop-hater. -

Please visit your nearest precinct and tell me what you think. My best friend at 7 years old is a cop, another of over 30 years, my riding buddy is a lieutenant, and most of my basketball buddies are cops so no I don't hate them. Go to the precinct immediately, or later and start counting. We have lots of police they just don't go outside.
A quick story, last time at the 79th precinct there was a disturbance outside -one of their cars I think - and at least 20 officers, the captain included rushed past me at the front door another group went out the back; go figure. -

So why did you move to this hotbed of criminal activity? -

I shouldnt laugh, but I cannot help it. It is clear that so many cops are thinking only of their own survival. People assume that every cop is brave, when in reality it's like any other job, some people are just not cut out for it. Cowardly cops should be dropped from the force. It is a job where you have to be willing to risk your life for the common good. Go to the trouble spots and stand your ground. make places safer for law abiding citizens. Thats the crux of the job.

When people call the cops to report suspicious activity, they are hoping the cops would simply pass by and see for themselves, or send someone in undercover to verify. They dont want the cops coming to the house, ringing the bell and asking them to come outside and point out the trouble makers. That should be clear. Somehow its not clear to the cops. Its as if they want to curtail people tipping them off, unless of course they're looking for a cop killer. . . -

Who cares? They're here now, maybe they can mobilize change where others have failed. Change starts with outrage, so let people be outraged. Its high time someone ask the cops to step things up in known trouble spots. Kids shooting eachother at 16 and 17 years old is STILL madness, no matter how many years its been going on. -

Another person killed in CH/FG this past week-shot in the chest and found dead in his car. A couple walking on Lafayette was beaten with a lead pipe a few weeks ago. What is going on? Does anyone ever see any police? I don't. -

...Have you tried...y'know, actually calling the police?
They're not mind-readers. The city will only authorize more foot patrols if they get an upswing in reports of crimes, and they will only hear about that upswing if people call them in.
They're just police, they're not clairvoyant. -

Don't they use PVC for piping these days? -

I see tons of cops on lafayette near bedford. they're on the st/in the train station all the time -
more blind cop-bashing, nice. this is very constructive.
let me guess, none of you have been to a community precinct meeting? none of you have talked to the community liaison officer?
or how about this- has anyone actually looked at the crime rates recently? b/c they're dropping in our precinct.
now comes the argument where people tell me the rates are dropping b/c people don't report crimes.
yadda yadda yadda. i think this exact thread gets made every 6 months. -

Yes, I see them on Myrtle Avenue many times a day. -
Boygabriel--
I admire your boy scout mentality but it doesn't jibe with reality when it comes to the 88th precinct. I've lived here for over 10 years, gone to many community precinct meetings, contacted Tish James, written the police commissioner, etc.
Things have not appreciably changed, which is why I can no longer go to the meetings and/or complain to the 88th. They're mostly about lip service. And isn't it amazing the the precinct meeting was cancelled following the shooting on Clifton Place in August?
Yes, you can quote the stats but they don't tell the whole story...it's easy to find people who make police reports only to have them "lost" by the 88th. Talk to folks who have lived here 20-30 years and they will confirm that there's been serious problems with the 88th for decades.
So continue your cop cheerleading if you must. But you need to grasp others' distrust and past experiences for the complete picture. -
old girl-
If you think there's a problem with the 88th, and the community meetings are worthless (hence you don't go anymore), then I very much welcome a discussion of what's going on in our community and more importantly, what people are doing to change it.
But you know what's not constructive? These repetitive, alarmist, no-account posts made every 6 months, usually by anonymous guests.
Do you really think crime is getting worse in CH/FG? Really?
Do you really believe the posts on here about such-and-such shooting give a reasonable look at the rates of crime in our neighborhood? I don't. -
I suppose if you're getting tired of the same threads repeating themselves every six months over here it's time to:
a) go outside and play
b) read a book instead of a website.
c) visit another website
If after 1000 posts, you're that cranky about valid discussion topics here, it's time to throw in the towel, old schooler.
It's gonna pop up in six months again. True to form. -
Nice......attack me instead of critiquing crime statistics, talking about what we can do to fight crime, or simply agreeing with the original poster that crime is, in fact, getting worse in FG/CH.

Subject: crime up?
As a FG resident since the mid 80's, I am very curious as to why anyone would ever wonder this question. In spite of what you may think, it is far safer community than it was when I arrived!
Is there a crime free neighborhood? I don't know of one. So long as there are people who are frustrated there will be violence. That's a social reality that isn't limited to FG.
As to why we don't have more beat cops, I've heard the 88th is just light in that regard. In fact that's citywide. The only portion of the police force that hasn't been reduced is the parking ticket division, which has grown. -
Stop complaining about the problems and start going to the meeting. The 88th precinct council meeting is tomorrow night.
Oct. 16, 2006 at 7:30pm. Location is Queen of All Saints Church, Corner of Vanderbilt and Lafayette. For more information contact 718-636-6526. -
Sorry I didn't mean 2006. Its 2007.
-
I was unable to go to the precinct meeting tonight. Can anyone give a synopsis?
