Anti-Tom's campaign on Washington Ave.?

I'd like to get this thread back to the original outrage that one store owner would claim his product is superior to that of another store. BURN IT DOWN!

I love Gus, but understand why some people don't, so i'm not arguing with anyone's opinion. Still, what does it say that more people are expressing their distaste for Gus for being "too nice" or "too friendly" than are angered by Shane's negative campaign? I'm proud to have Tom's as a neighbor, and have refused to spend a penny at Shane's, in large part because others have told me similar stories to those that were told here. -
I think that Gus is a great guy - he offered to get his hands dirty helpin' my wife and I open her store.

Gus has given my kids half-dollars and dollar coins and told them to go home and put them away for college. The kids love him, and the neighborhood wouldn't be the same without him. He's a genuinely nice person -- a mensch.

Doctor J:
Love your disection of Eastern Ortho vs Roman Catho....the 'filioque' controversy is near and dear to my heart, as a great example of how one small turn of phrase can alter history...
But...how can you have a Bartholomew I without having a Bartholomew II? -

The fact that we're even asking the question must be a symptom of our adolescent society. These guys are in it for the long haul. A countable infinity of Bartholomews starts with a single patriarch.

But surely it is an impious arrogance to assume that your tenure as patriarch will be worthy enough for your successors to commemorate you by taking your name? The Latin popes never did this...and the general record for impiety on the part of the Bishops of Rome far outstrips that of their counterparts in Constantinople...

Good point. I'm wondering if there's a political subtext here: maybe there was another Bartholomew (the zeroth), e.g. patriarch of "3rd Rome" (Moscow) or some other splinter group that "the first" title is a subtle dig at. And of course, if things don't work out, they can always change "the first" to "the last" later on. -
Never eaten at Cafe Shane or Toms ( I'm embarassed to say I have never actually seen it open). What time does it close typically?
Neither place impressed me enough to eat there. Its always DARK in there!??
I've eaten at dives before but I will be happy when something better than Tom's as a choice comes along. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the food is fine, but I have no special place in my heart for a place that makes it difficult for me to eat there. I work for a living so my weekends are the time I like to check out places - especially Sundays.
Within the next 5 years they will both have more competition.
If he ever sells or retires, etc. I'll be glad to see something else that opens on Sundays (dude, hire a Sunday Staff already, I dont care what religion you are). Or not...but just like the hardware store on Washington that closes early and isn't helpful, and has terrible stock, I dont spend my money there either. With Lowes, Home Depot. Pintchik and Target, I dont have to worry about it anymore.
Until more shops come my way on Washington that I like, I vote with my feet. In a few years, all of Washington may be different (better choices) and hopefully, this will all be irrelevant anyway.I am sure Tom is a nice local guy that has been around forever, etc. But more choices and competition never hurts us consumers.
BTW: This is probably true of many places but:
