Hit and run by postal service truck? — Brooklynian

Hit and run by postal service truck?

I went to my parked car tonight to find the bumper smashed in half, headlight hanging, and a hole in my tire big enough to fit 3 fingers through. As I was racking my brain trying to figure out how this could've happened, someone came out of their apartment and told me she witnessed it earlier that day. A car was double parked on the other side of the street from me, and an enormous US Postal Service truck tried to squeeze through. Something must have been sticking out from under the truck and as it passed it slashed through my tire and totaled my bumper.

Between the new tires, bumper, headlights and who knows what else, I think this will exceed $1000 in repairs.

I filed a police report but without the license plate info of the truck, having a witness didn't help and they wouldn't even mention it on the report. Now I don't know what to do. I can't just let this go. I'm considering going to the post office (Van Brunt, ugh) and talking to the manager there. Anyone have any suggestions? I doubt the culprit will just admit they did this. They definately knew they damaged my car b/c the witness told me when the tire was punctured it made a sound like an explosion.

Any ideas?

(on a side note, I highly recomend Strauss Automotive on 4th ave and 14th st. They were amazing there - helped me right away, went above and beyond by helping tie up my bumper, etc and served me with a smile. Not like the idiots at Pep Boys whose computer has been down for 5 days so they can't do any non-cash sales and gave me an attitude. I will be going to Strauss from now on for all auto-related issues)

  • ask the neighbor the time when it happened. it would be pretty easy to track down who was driving in the area around that time.
  • That's seriously crappy the police wouldn't put it in the report. If the witness saw a postal truck, it should be incredibly easy for the cops to go to the post office and find trucks with damage on it. Shit, I watch CSI, this is basic work to find paint samples and compare it.

Perhaps the cops don't bust government workers. I guess you could go to where they keep the trucks and check it out yourself or go to the post office and ask them.

    Good luck. That really sucks.
  • Something similar, though not as serious, happened to me years ago with a TIME MOVERS truck. Someone saw it happen and left a note on my car that it was TIME MOVERS at so-and-so time and date, but didn't get a license plate. All I got was an obnoxious reply from the manager, and I had to cough up the cash to fix the broken mirror and bumper.

Nice to have some personal responsibility for your actions, eh?
  • Yeah - I know the cops could go all Matlock on them if they wanted but I wasn't really expecting that. If someone was hurt maybe that would be more priority, I don't know.

The incident happened on 8th St a block away from the rear entrance to the Van Brunt station where all the trucks come in. So theres probably a lot of postal traffic going down there. The cops even suggested I do my own stakeout and go by there the same time on Monday and see if a truck passes through. Unfortunately, I have a job!
