Cab service?
In my old neighborhood, if I wanted a cab (usually a livery cab), all I had to do was stand on a corner and one would shortly arrive. I haven't noticed a lot of cabs around. Is it possible to pick up a cab this way, or do I have to call a service?
I have to take my cat to the vet tomorrow and I've found that there is no good way to do it by subway.

Legally, you have to call, unless you spot a yellow cab (not likely).

Well, which cab companies would you recommend?
And how much would a trip from here to Park Slope cost? -
There are quite a few threads on car services - maybe a search would be a good place to start.

I've always found that getting a gypsy or livery cab is very easy on Nostrand Avenue. Lots are always prowling the streets at all hours. Yellow cabs are another story.

I believe you'll find Catch Ah Ride car service on Nostrand bet. St. Johns and Sterling also very good.
Good luck with kitty! -
I ended up taking the subway and the bus. While this trek was difficult on me, it seemed to be easier on the cat as he gets really carsick sometimes. Plus he's calmer if he can see people and he enjoys people coming up to him and greeting him.
I did have to take a cab from Atlantic Ave. to Animal Kind because I couldn't find the B67 bus stop. (Now I know where it is!) It cost me $9. So that tells me that if I tried to take a cab from home, it would have been really expensive.
Not only is Penny AOK, but he gained a whole pound!
And now he's back home no worse for the wear, though he's not eating yet because he feels a tad queasy. If I had gone by car, the poor thing would be a zombie. -
Subject: car service
I'm sorry I didn't catch this thread earlier. I use Animal Kind and have had them call a pet-friendly car service for me in the past. I can't remember the name, but I'm sure if you called them they would tell you. I needed to get a very sick dog home and a bus just wasn't an option. The driver was ready for it and more than kind. I put down a blanket to keep the dog hair off the seat and tipped him extra for his kindness.
Sounds like public transit might work best for your cat, but I'm not sure your ride should have been that expensive, although I don't know which car service you took or where on Atlantic your ride began. Also, if you need to get back there when it's cold or rainy, a good car service is a good thing to find.
It's a good idea to ask the dispatcher when you call what the price of the ride costs. I took the same route with the same service for ages and the drivers all seemed to quote what they thought I would pay. When I started asking the dispatcher, I had only to quote his price to be sure I was being treated fairly.
I use Evelyn all the time and have always had good service and great drivers. Incidentally, Evelyn was not the car service that had drivers that quoted different prices for the same route. What I've found is that if you use the same service all the time, you get to know the drivers and they get to know you and the dispatcher comes to recognize your voice and address. All of this adds up to a pretty good thing for both you and the drivers. They are based in Prospect Heights but their typical radius seems to stem eastward. But establishing a relationship with the car service near you on Nostrand might be a good strategy as well. Glad to hear the cat is good. -
Well, I would definitely use a car service if there was an emergency, but barring that, it seems that using the subway and bus is actually easier on the cat, even though it's tough on me. But since kitty is 16, his priorities win. Plus, he enjoys people coming up to him and saying hi!
He's no worse the wear for the trip today. When I had to take him by cab from Astoria to Crown Heights (which is an hour-long trip), he was a zombie for a week. He just doesn't like car trips any more. -
i feel your pain. i have had to take my critters (2 cats) by cab and they hate it. but i don't even think i could try the subway with them, they are deathly afraid of loud noises. glad you made it ok!
-
He doesn't like noise either, but he feels safe enough in his carrier. I think the worst for him is carsickness. I know that I don't tend to get carsick on the train or bus, so I figured this might be easier on him. And it was.
Still, oy! What a schlep! -
but still, where were you coming from on Atlantic that it cost you 9.50 to get to A.K.?
-
It was $9. I was coming from the Atlantic Terminal. You know, that big subway stop. But now that I know where the B67 bus stop is now, I won't have to do that again.
The name of the cab company was Pacific. -
nine dollars is way to high for that distance. if you find yourslef in that area again, call Arecibo and don't hesitate to haggle with your driver. that really should have been seven bucks, tops. often, i think, drivers build their tip into their price.
-
That's part of the reason why I don't tip livery drivers (because it's often higher than I would pay by yellow cab anyway) unless they do something to earn their tip, such as helping me with my bags to the door.

Hey lilbangladesh,
I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier. I use Eastern Car Service for Animal Kind 718-499-6263. It's usually $12 bucks from Ditmas Park to Animal Kind.
BTW, I'm taking the kitty there in a few days to get her ears checked. She has stopped scratching her ear significantly. It may have been the cat grass.
