Can't take the loud music anymore
Subject: Can't take the loud music anymore
I live nearish the corner of St. Marks and Underhill and when traffic stops at the red light there every few minutes, the noise level cranks up from the car radios thumping. It's totally unnerving. :shock:I can't wait until it's cold and peeps start closing their car windows...

yup, par for the course for that intersection. but, rolled up windows don't help a whole lot.

I just barely made it through my first summer here. Seriously though, if I had any idea when I applied for the place last october I'd definately have reconsidered. Could give Showtime at the Appollo a run for the money. Daytime naps are out, my boyfriend can't record music, etc...oy
Otherwise I do love it here.

If only you were around back when Rob Base and EZ Rock "It Takes Two" came out.. imagine 6 months straight of "Ah!.. Yea!.. Ah!.. Yea!.. " from every IROC, Mustang, and Cutlass Supreme in Brooklyn.

MOVE If you cant take a loud car you're in the wrong city. If you want quiet try the subs

Subs are a lot like NYC -- cramped, bad air...
Seriously, though, this line of reasoning is hardly original. It's tired and it's rude. New Yorkers like to kvetch about their surroundings. Does that mean *you* should move?

Nah, I was born a New Yorker and will probably check out as one. Yes, this just happens to be the noisiest of places I've lived (which makes me totally lose it after awhile), but the nabe definately makes up for that in many other ways. Thanks for the realty tip though.

don't know any great solutions for this particular problem but there are strategies that can help.
for instance, years ago at my last apt. in manhattan, my second floor bedroom faced the street, where car alarms went off regularly and the garbage trucks came by around 6 am. since then, the one non-negotiable of any apartment i've taken has been a bedroom that does not face the street.
just because we live here doesn't mean we have to take it. -
PH is by far the loudest but also my favorite neighborhood i have lived in over my 12 or so years in nyc.

I wasn't even living here yet and I had the same experience!

i've never been inside a car with one of those superbass systems, does anyone know if the music even sounds good? i only hear it from the outside, with their trunk vibrating in time making it sound totally muddy. i can only assume it sounds better inside?
i dunno, Restless Native, considering the state of contemporary music, your vision of a Rob Base-filled world sounds pretty good to me. what's that guy doing these days anyway?? -
Gotta say, in the 5 years I've lived here, I rarely hear super-loud car stereos. My parents place in Bensonhurst is on a 4-lane street and the entire house shakes from the music blasting there.

I hear super loud car stereos around St Johns and Nostrand all the time, all hours of night and day. It doesn't bother me too much. Now the car ALARM going off for twenty minutes outside my window at 3am this morning, that pissed me off a bit.

i think it's more about feeling good. i mean, an entire vibrating car, it's not so bad.
but yeah, i think for some reason it may actually sound louder outside the car. -
i'm telling you guys its for the chicks!! blah i used to know some guy who had this shit installed in his car. he swears it gets the attention of the ladies LOL.
plus he is one of those guys who yell and scream at the girls and swear it works in getting numbers too. -
I remember noticing, when I last visited a friend who lives in the Boerum Hill area, that there were a few signs prohibiting loud honking/radio playing in the nabe. Can't remember the exact street now...

Subject: Boom cars
I once got so fed up with a thumping black SUV that had double-parked outside our living room that I went onto the fire escape and pelted it with a raw egg as it drove away. Hit it right on the windshield.
They stopped and got out, trying to figure out where it came from as my fiance and I giggled from the window.
Very mature...I know. -

Try yelling obscenities from your window while waving an Uzi.
