Church in the Area?

Hey all - I'd love to head to church this Sunday. I'm looking for a progressive church where there's a good mix of young folk and the old timers. Good worship music is a plus. Looking for a place that is progressive enough, for example, to not preach about the sins of homosexuality but I also understand that not every church is going to accept it with arms wide open. Would love a pastor/priest that gives sermons that are challenging and make you think. I'm not pick on the denomination.

Its not in the neighborhood, but I'd try Ebenezer Baptist Church on Lafayette between St James and Washington. The only church in the area I've been to is St. Marks on Brooklyn and I don't think it meets all of your criteria.

If you are looking closer to home you can try Bethany on MacDonough and Sumner or Concord on Marcy and Putnam. I haven't been to either one of those recently, but I've got friends that attend both and they seem to like them.

I think you may be referring to Emmanuel Baptist Church, which at the corner of St. James and Lafayette in Clinton Hill. It's a wonderful progressive Baptist church. I've been a member for 5 years now. They have service at 8a, 10a, and 12p. I think there is also Sat. at 5:30p. Great music!!!

Hey, there.

Another option for you is Greater Restoration Baptist Church on St. Johns between Kingston and Albany. I've been a member there for three years and we always welcome visitors.

We're a small, storefront church - about 50 people come to the Sunday worship service at 11 a.m. - but we serve a ton of folks in the community through our afterschool program, GED classes, etc. The church has been around for 10 years now and has a reputation in the community of being committed to social justice issues.

We're a diverse church as well and I think that makes us distinctive in the community. We range in age from newborns to 80 year olds. We're African-American, Caribbean, White, Russian, etc. And we also have a socio-economic mix. We have teachers, day laborers, folks with Master's degrees, etc.

What unites us is a common desire to know Jesus Christ and to represent Him here in our community. That's why we are so committed to serving our neighbors here in Crown Heights.

If you would like to visit, it would be a great way to meet some of your neighbors - even if you decide it's not the right church for you.

Has anyone been to the Lutheran church on Lincoln Place between Rogers and Nostrand? I've heard good things about the pastor and they seem like a lively bunch over there.

I attended a service at Greater Restoration Baptist Church last Sunday, and it was great. Truly welcoming and the pastor is wonderful. One phrase that he used a lot that I really liked was "radical inclusion," as in, "we practice radical inclusion, Jesus practiced radical inclusion." The sermon was topical, global, progressive and enlightening and the music was great. I recommend it highly.

I've been attending this church since February and I love it.

The services are on Sundays at 11 am on the corner of 6th Ave & Lincoln (Park slope elementary school).

Subject: Another progressive church

While it's located a bit further north in Brooklyn, you could also check out the Greenpoint Reformed Church. They are a progressive congregation with a commitment to full inclusion of LGBT people. Very welcoming, lots of younger folks and decent music (especially on weeks when their jazz band is there).

Don't overlook Park Slope United Methodist at 8th St and 6th Ave in Park SLope. One of the few churches I've been to where the average age is under 40. They've got a long tradition of progressive politics.
