I lived on 22nd between 6 & 7. I went to PS 10, IS 88 onto John Jay.
I remember Germains. Upstairs in the winter with Santa Claus and the summer with the slot cars.

Lenny's pizza was okay, but I got it free from Luigi's (both of wish are still in business).

The 5th Ave diner on 5th and 9th.

Smolins bar, Timbo's, Charlie Browns, there have been a few. Though Farrells on ninth ave was my favorite.

Johns Bargain store, Grey Shells, O'Neills card store.
J. Michaels fruniture.

Stavenhagens pawn shop.

Avons Movie theather (now a McDonalds on 9th st)

Larsens bakery.

Jacks Candy Store, Rocco's Candy store, Steve's Candy store on 6th Ave with Matties across the street. I remember a dollar would get you an italian bread bag full of penny candy.

I don't remember trolleys, and I was born well after there was an elevated train above 5th Avenue.

Greenwood Cemetery is a much more pretty place to kill a day than Prospect Park.

I miss eggcreams. I miss Mikes ice cream truck. I miss the king kong ride. I miss Wessons. I miss malt shakes.

Through all the changes of Park Slope, I still love it. Love the Brown Stones. The wooden homes as well. I love the black slate sidewalks. The Ansonia Clock Factory. St. Thomas, St. John the Evangelist, The Greek Bazaar...

There is way too much...

  • Smolen! A few years ago I lived on 22nd between 7th and 8th. I had several friends living in the area, and we used to go to Smolen all the time. Loved Charlie, the bartender -- hope he's still around -- and some of the older guys who were regulars there were really sweet and always up for a game of pool.
  • If you feel like reading about Park Slope "back when" read A Drinking Life by Pete Hamill. Wonderful description of growing up in the slope starting around WWII.

Wow - you brough it all back - that was the first place to give me credit :D
  • Smolen seems so unwelcoming...isn't not?

I lived in PS until 1942 when all the kids went into military.
I well remember Michaels furniture store, Neergaards Pharmacy, the Prospect Theatre, Avon.
I especially rmember when as a kid I walked by the old Higgins ink property on 9th street between 5th and 4th Ave. Very spooky appearnce on dark windy night.
Remember the 3 adjacent bars on 5th avenue near ninth street, roundtown, whitehouse and smittys. AlsoCostellos on 7th street and 5th avenue.
One of my cousins worked at germains on 15th street.
Went to school at St.Francis Xavier and also attended StThomas on 9th st.
After WWII we all played stickball for months in spring of 1946 before we got serious.
Miss PS, Coney Island but here in AZ it's the good life!
    Carry on,
    James J. Wilson

  • What was Germains?

It was a department store that was on 5th Ave and I think 15th Street.

It wasn't when I was going there, at least, about four/five years ago. My friends and I had been in a few times before we started getting to know the regulars, but it wasn't at all unfriendly.
  • Does anyone remember the old Purity Restaurant, when it was located on 7th avenue between union and president? I remember the original owner Nick being behind the cash register. They also used to have the ugliest waitresses you ever saw. I remember my father asking him why that was. He said, that he wanted the tables to change over quickly and didn't want the customers flirting with the waitresses. That this would cost him money.

This was a great saying, and I always remember it whenever I see a greek diner.

    Boy, that place was great.

I haven't checked out the current one on 6th street, because I will always compare it to the original.
  • I fought in the Civil War. Brooklyn was way cool back then. Good huntin' and fishin'!!!

I remember my mom would go down to the basement and shop for linens and things and I would try to behave hoping she would buy me a toy
but it was always so hot down there
  • I remember the old Purity Restaurant. I used to banish my husband to it when he was bad!

I do. I remember it when it was good. My father and friends would meet their every Sunday for brunch (back in the '70's). I also remember Ding's, Rosy Tomatoe, Bellamellio, etc.

Oof, for a sec there I thought you meant was SMOLEN in the cemetery! :)

You're right! I messed up -- I was between 6th and 7th, not 7th and 8th. The cemetery runs along 7th between 20th and 23rd. Sorry, it's been almost four years since I lived there.

I'll let it go this time. Next time however.........
  • Hi everyone,

I've been in the neighborhood pretty much all my life (except my college years)... live on 9th street. I went to PS 124 (The current principle was my 3rd and 4th grade teacher) then to William Alexander JHS 51 and these are the things I remember off the top of my head ...

CVS on 9th use to be Odd Lot
Blockbuster on 5th ave use to be Consumers
Rent-A-Center on 5th use to be a sneaker store called Winners
Astoria Bank on 5th use to be Burger King
McDonalds on 9th st. use to be a movie theatre
Dunkin Donuts use to be a place called Capri
Pita Hut was Dee & Dee donut
The bakery on 9th street use to be a movie rental place called top flicks
The mortgage place on 9th and 7th ave use to be soundtrack
Comics Plus on 7th ave now gone
Hall Mark on 11th street is now a bank
T-mobile use to be Grey Shell
The Convent is now some kind of youth help center.
St.Thomas Bazaar. (Sad to hear St. Thomas closed)

I had forgotten about Consumers on 15 street
as a child that was my favorite place to shop
you would go in and search thru this phone book type catalogue
fill out in index card and bring it to the cashier and wait for it to
come around on a conveyor belt
    thanx for the memory
