Question for rescuers and foster folks — Brooklynian

Question for rescuers and foster folks

Ok, I have 2 foster cats that I've had for going on 6 months. I have come to believe that they are actively trying to NOT be adopted. Every time people have come over to see them, Trixie hides. Alice has bitten 2 people so far. They are never like this when it's just me around them. I'm beginning to think a home will never be found for them. So, my question is twofold. Has anyone had a foster that didn't seem to want to find a home? And, at what point do you give up and say, "Looks like I've got another cat."*

* Not that that would be horrible, these girls are just wonderful and I adore them. But 6 cats and 2 dogs is insane, even for me.

  • I'm not sure when that point is, but it sounds like you really have your hands full so I'd encourage perserverence in trying to find them homes. Have you tried inviting friends over as frequently as possible to help socialize these girls? Maybe then you could train them to enjoy meeting strangers. You could give 'em lots of treats every time they meet new people.
  • Well, I have a crazy idea, but I guess anything helps.
How about making a cute video of them and posting on youtube with adoption info?
or get the most absolutely adorable picture of them and submit to cuteoverload.com with a plea for adoption. You be surprised how many local check those sites.

Also, give you're friends a flyer (hint hint) so they can post at their local supermarket boards/co-op etc.
I can photoshop a good flyer for you if you send me the blurb and jpgs.
  • I forgot to mention that Trixie hides when anyone comes over, friends, the super, my mom. Alice is very protective of Trixie and really really really loves wet food. If she feels someone is bothering Trixie or denying her wet food, she's not too happy. But then again, not too happy for Alice is pretty mild. I guess I'm just stressed out right now and feeling discouraged. My stacation in a week will definitely help with that. Thanks for the suggestions guys, you rock!
  • if i were a cat, i wouldn't want to leave your house either. seems like a great place (especially compared to an abandoned apartment or a fire escape) -- toys, buddies, yummy wet food.... :D
  • I'm convinced the girls are thinking, "Hey, we were living on a fire escape before we got here. She's crazy if she thinks we're leaving!" I don't think they realize that there are other good homes out there. Ones without 2 big stinky dogs trying to sniff their butts. How do I get Trixie to stop hiding when people come over? I think I can keep Alice from biting by giving her wet food when someone comes over. I'm pretty sure that's why she bites, because she wants wet food. But, I also have to wonder how someone can get bit by Alice. She's not a sneaky cat, she lets you know when she's cranky. I can clearly see the signs and stop petting her, anyone else who's had a cat should be able to see them too. Any advice, guys?
  • These cats are smart - they don't want to leave!

I'd think that your best bet would be to try to socialize them with as many people as possible. See if you can have friends come over so that they get used to people.
