Fabric store in Park Slope? — Brooklynian

Fabric store in Park Slope?

anonymous
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I need to alter my Halloween costume, and am in need of a fabric store. Are there any in this area? Thanks!

  • Personally, I would just suck it up and get on the train to the Garment District. I think there are one or two small stores around here, but they won't have a tenth of the selection.

*is taking a break from working on own Halloween costume*
  • Here's an older discussion about fabric stores from when I was looking for material to make curtains a few months ago -- there are several good suggestions there. The pickin's were slim in Brooklyn, so I ended up going to the Garment District. There are well over a dozen stores on 39th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues in Manhattan!
  • There is a nice fabric and notion store on Bridge St. between Fulton and Willoughby
  • Subject: used to be Sew Brooklyn on 7th Ave...

there used to be a store (probably mentioned in the old thread) on 7th avenue between 3rd and 4th called Sew Brooklyn which closed maybe 2 years ago. (since then in that space has been Funky Monkey and now Cocoa Bar...) I always wondered why they closed and felt they could have hung around a bit longer and might have caught a new wave of customers. (I guess moms are not sewing?)

They had an unusual practice that you had to buy your fabric there for a sewing class which, if you sew, you probably have a lot of fabric and this rule alone was annoying.

    Still, it was convenient.

It always seems like Bay Ridge should have lots of fabric/sewing stores but not really. I've driven by a bunch in what I guess is Midwood.

This doesn't help much, sorry. I'm curious about the one on Bridge Street. Thanks for that tip.
  • There are a couple of fabric stores downtown, near the Lawrence Street station (R train). --E.
  • Subject: We NEED a sewing store in Brooklyn badly!

I'm pretty new to NYC, so I'll check out the old discussion and other stores some have suggested. As for Garment District, I've gone to the Garment District twice before and found nothing I needed after trudging around for over an hour. All I needed were some notions and certain type of double-fold basic seam binding tape. Exhausted and nearly in tears I finally asked in one of the fabric stores and she said there was no such thing as notions in the Garment District. She was very sympathetic, and said "you need a real fabric store". I can understand why a Joann's Fabrics or Hancock Fabrics couldn't afford the commercial rent to open in Manhattan, but why not further out in Brooklyn like in Bay Ridge? It's really frustrating. It's making me think if I want to keep up with sewing, a hobby I've enjoyed since high school, I'll have to buy a car so I can drive out to Long Island or New Jersey to shop for what I need. :(
  • Subject: 2 stores for notions...

there's a store called Sew Fast Sew Easy where I learned to sew. It used to be on 57th Street and now is on an office space in the Garment District on 37th Street I believe. It's not a storefront so you won't stumble across it unless you know. The web site is : www.sewfastseweasy.com

Also, P&S Fabrics which is on Broadway below Canal Street has lots of notions and is worth checking out!

    good luck!

Thanks for the information! Those sound great.
  • Subject: Fabric in Brooklyn

The lack of real craft stores in Brooklyn is a real pain, I do have a car and go to Long Island or New Jersey. That said, there's a fabric store on Coney Island Ave. called Sew Materialistic. I haven't gone there for fabric, only for yarn (Roxy's Yarns is also in the same store) but it might be worth checking out. It's not too far down (Ave L? I? sorry.) Also there's the Rag Shop on 60th St. and 16th (I think) Ave., in a strange little mall with the Pathmark in it. They have fabrics and some notions. I think both shops are on bus routes.
  • Subject: thanks and...

hi. thanks. I found a list of all the fabric shops in Brooklyn which I'll try to post. I don't know how many have notions but Sew Materialistic and something called Sew Creative were both on it. I'd like to check Sew Materialistic out. Thanks for the heads up about it. It's nice to know when someone has an experience to share of a place.

Question - other than 'chain' type fabric stores, are there any unique good ones that you go to in New Jersey or Long Island?

    Thanks.

I know this isn't really a concern, but I'm just going to say I find those names irritating - not sew clever...

She's WRONG. There are stores selling all sorts of notions on 39th (possibly 38th--I just follow my "nose") bewteen 7th & 8th Av. There's also my favorite, the excellent Greenberg & Hammer store on 57th between 5th & 6th. Hard to believe but not so long ago that block had several higher-end fabric stores.
But no, there's nothing left in PS and virtually nothing in this end of Brooklyn, alas.......
  • Subject: 57th Street...

Definitely re: 57th Street once having good fabric stores. Paron Fabrics used to be there and, I learned to sew at Sew Fast Sew Easy (sorry to the person who hates the 'sew' references - they are a bit annoying...), which was on that block between 5th and 6th. She had notions and sewing classes. I used to work on that block and it was very convenient. I don't know Greenberg & Hammer tho'. What is that?

    Thanks.

I think the Garment District is the better place to hit.

SFSE has moved to the Garment District (237 West 35th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues). My favorite 'secret' fabric seller is hidden in the same building - Metro Textiles...you'ld be hard-pressed to find better prices on designer fabrics than in this cramped little space on the 5th floor.

Paron fabrics has consolidated all of its stores to a single location (West 40th Street at 7th Avenue). Only Greenberg & Hammer (a great tailoring supply store) remains on 57th.

If you don't want to trek up to G&H Steinlauf and Stoller on West 39th Street is another great tailoring supply store. Do note that many garment district stores are open M-F only.

    hth,

I wasn't advocating 57th street as a sewing mecca! just following up on the other thread. (ha.) :)

good tip re: metro textiles. thanks!

I should have read up the thread a bit more carefully - my apologies for sounding like a smarty-pants.

  • Subject: no worries!

    no worries...

I loved the old Sew Fast Sew Easy with the colorful funky dress form outside on 57th Street (which is so cleaned up now and sanitized) and that funky building walking up the stairs and discovering the place inside. I have not walked by there in years so I don't know if the building still looks like that... although SFSE having moved to the garment district made me think a rent hike caused this - or maybe once Paron and others moved from 57th Street, she was better off there.

    Thanks for the tips!
