Eater PSA: Brooklyn Bartenders Beware
Friday, October 5, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It seems 3 Brooklyn neighborhood bars have been robbed at gunpoint in the last month and, warning to Brooklyn bartenders, the robbers are as yet not apprehended. Seems it's not just the hipsters you have to worry about. We pass along the following email, received at Eater HQ late yesterday, because we care, people. Don't ever say we don't:

As some of you may know, 3 Brooklyn neighborhood bars have been robbed at gunpoint in the last month: Bait and Tackle, Floyd, and yesterday Moonshine.
Similar situation all 3 times: two latino guys, early 20's, average height/weight. The first guy (teardrop tattoo below left eye, neck tattoo) comes in Sunday afternoon between noon and four, asks to use the bathroom, and leaves. A few minutes later, he and his ski mask-wearing friend come in, scare the shit out of the bartender and rob the place at gunpoint.

I'll save you all the gory details, but suffice to say it is unpleasant, and I'd rather not have to hear about one of my friends going through this next. The cops, as usual, don't seem to be breaking a sweat to keep this from happening again. This Sunday we captured the entire robbery on video camera, as well as the license plate of the SUV they were driving, and still no concrete leads and no arrests.

Hopefully I will soon have fliers with a still image of the unmasked guy's face on them, but until then, you can help by spreading the word to all the Brooklyn bartenders/bargoers you know.

Why does this not surprise me?

  • Oh, and check out this post from the the Eater forum:

A reporter called the precinct to inquire about the status of the investigation and found out

a- the did not even know about the first robbery a month ago

b- they "hadn't decided if the Bait and Tackle and Moonshine robberies were connected"

    AND

c- had the audacity to complain that reporters "never cover the positive things they do in the community"

As the manager of the BnT, I have been on the horn daily leaving message for the gumshoe supposedly assigned to the case to try and get ANY update. LIE to me. Pacify me. JUST CALL ME BACK! Absolutely useless.

I'm sure King Without a Crown will weigh in with an "explanation" though.
  • a license plate check should yield useful info, no? Unless the car itself is a stolen vehicle.

this is when I really love the internets as a format for broadcasting info, and getting followup like the comments on Eater

    thx for posting pigeon!
    :D
  • I viewed this post on the Crown Heights forum. It's locked there. why?
  • OOOOps, what I wanted to post was a thanks to the OP, Alfairnadia?, I think, for putting it up. The more that people know, the better prepared they are to take action. And no, I don't advocate bartenders carrying guns. I advocate an informed public and lots of mirrors and cameras and other non-violent means of identifying and preventing crime. A little information, like a tattoo id can go a long way.

As the post you saw explains at the top: "This is a bit of low tech x-posting while we renovate the site." Normally when you xpost, you can have the exac same thread, with the same comments, appear on multiple boards. That's broken right now, so instead of having a separate thread on the same topic on each board, the mods are redirecting people to a single thread, which we can xpost normally once things are fixed.
  • Moderator note:

This thread had spun WAY off-topic into a more general discussion about guns. I think the info about the robberies of local bars shouldn't be diluted by a polarizing discussion on a topic people have heated feelings about, so I split the gun topic off and moved it to Brooklyn and Beyond since it isn't neighborhood-specific:

    http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=38207

Please go there if you want to continue debating gun stuff, and let's keep this thread on topic, please.
  • looks like they got caught -- by coming into the bar for a drink.
