Small/Petite Women's Clothes--where to shop? — Brooklynian

Small/Petite Women's Clothes--where to shop?

Subject: Small/Petite Women's Clothes--where to shop?

I need pants that fit!

I'm fairly small and have a heck of a time finding clothes that fit anymore. The small end sizes are too big at most places. Mainly the problem is pants/skirts. I know some of the high end places have smaller fits in the waist but I'd also like to find them in "short" sizes and something cheaper.

Suggestions on where buy pants that you like, that fit a short petite person (adult, late 20s) well and that aren't really expensive ($80 seems like a lot for a pair of pants for me, so below that is my target. The cheaper the better as I tend to destroy clothes.)

I'm not against hemming so if the pants/skirts are really great and not too pricey I can do that.

Brands, big stores, local boutiques, teen sections that don't look too young--tell me where to dress myself!

Thanks,
from trying to look my age

  • have you tried h&m? or macy's petites?

most european stores still size things without the vanity shit being added in so you may get lucky. esprit?
  • oh, and, this is online, but have you tried jcrew's petites? they're having a big sale right now, which is why I mention it. the petite sizes appear to have been un-vanity sized - like a petite size 8 fits more like a size 6, etc.
  • H&M is either not small enough or if it is, it's the flashy juniors stuff.

The only time I've gone into a Macy's I was so overwhelmed--I'm terrible at shopping in big stores anyway and I could not navigate that place enough to find anything in my price range. Suggestions on a specific Macys locations departments might help.

So frustrating--I know there are lots of women smaller than me. Where do they shop? I've asked a few people who looked to be my size and had clothes I liked where they got them and all said they had spent tons on tailoring :/

I'm much for clothes shopping so don't assume I know anything about which store carry European sizes, petites, etc.

well, go to a jcrew and try on their sizes. then order online from their sale. I think banana republic also has petites, and I believe the location in rock ctr, at least, has the petite department on site.

in macy's I'd go directly to their petite floor (I'd go to the main macy's at 34th - once you get off their main floor you'll feel a little less overwhelmed). then I'd go to their in-house brands for the cheapest stuff. I think one of their in-house brands is called style & co.

also, I think ann taylor and ann taylor loft both carry petites and are more 'adult' in a lot of ways than the euro stores.

the euro store I'd recommend, but it might be out of your price range and would require hemming, is zara.
  • Thanks, Alafair.

I used to shop Banana Republic when I lived in a small town in the south b/c they had awesome sale options but I haven't been in a while since the "city" prices are so much higher. Must get off ass and try online shopping (after going to stores to try on stuff)...now to figure out how to get packages delivered when I want them!

Boys clothes would be perfect since I have no hips, if only they didn't have large crotches in the pants.
  • i don't know how small u are but i'm a 2p and ann taylor's great for work clothes, zara, express (sometimes), banana republic, jcrew.
  • "I think one of their in-house brands is called style & co. "

Why do I think that in store brand is Lerner?
    Or is that NY style?

Yeah the petite thing can be a challenge.. even on tops I am always cuffing the "long sleeves."
  • I feel your pain in finding good petites, especially in pants... Then I started going to Ann Taylor/Ann Taylor Loft. Loft always has some sort of sale, and their petites work for my short little legs!
  • Agreed on Ann Taylor. Their length is just right for me (I'm 5'2"). I have to get the waists taken in (by Mrs. Han at Randex on 6th Ave and 5th St - she's a genius) because my hips are, erhm, substantial and my waist is small - but if you're kinda straight up and down, the pants might work great for you.
  • OpossumQueen, I am also searching for nice petite pants, so I'm glad you started this thread!

I love Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft for petite stuff. I've never actually bought pants there, but now I will check them out.

I recently got a nice gray pair from the Gap (ankle length) for $70. And I was in jcrew yesterday (though I didn't try anything on) and saw their corderoys on sale for $60. Great colors, too!

Today I tried on a pair of petite pants at the Rock Center Banana Republic, and I thought they fit pretty well. They were $100, though, which is well above your range. But FWIW, I think it's worth spending a little more for things that fit well, because they're so hard to find.

I agree Macy's is a little overwhelming, but I love it because I can always find something there, and the quality is generally pretty good. I recently bought a cute Style & Co. top for $35, so you can find reasonably priced stuff. (However, said top was actually for misses - I could not find it in the petite section. But for that price, I can have it shortened. :))

I was recently in the Fulton St. Macy's on a Sunday, and it didn't seem nearly as crowded as the 34th St. branch. Their shoe selection isn't as broad, so I imagine the petites section isn't either, but it may be worth checking out if you find 34th St. to be too much.
  • I stopped by Ann Taylor Loft last night after work. I tried on several pants that I loved--pricey but length and style were great for my body. However, the 0P was too big in everything but some jeans. I tried a 2P in a "slim" jean--I could pull them off without unbuttoning them so I asked for a 0P. They had it in a different wash and it fit completely differently--legs were perfect and waste was okay except for the low-rise which does everything wrong for me.

I don't think I'm one of those women who looks too skinny--I just have a small frame and a boyish figure.

Thanks for the suggestions! The quest continues...once I get over this strep throat that attacked in full force last night, I'm thinking of trying J. Crew and maybe Macys.
  • a few suggestions:

    New York and Co.

    American Eagle maybe?

    The Gap maybe?

    Old Navy
  • there's a vendor in the weekend flea markets at the school on 7th ave
she always has amazing deals for petites. you just have to dig

she's a caribbean woman. sometimes she has entire Ann Taylor suits for cheap.
  • My petite gal shops at Bebe. Macy's and J Crew are frump city.

Dumb Opossum, Opossums don't wear pants.
  • thumbs up for Gap ankle length pants. Ever since I lost my favorite seamstress (aka my sister) to the cult of parenthood I have actually had to search for pants that fit properly.
  • My gf loves to drag me with her to Anthropologie and Forever 21. She's 5'4", size 4 or 6 depending on the brand, but is wlays mentioning how the sizes at those places run small.

Also, there are some good deals on designer stuff to be found at Loehman's!
  • Subject: old answer but...

One more vote to Ann Taylor Loft. I am petite and it always fits me really good. Banana republic is fine too, I found a pants for $15 on sale last year, and it fits perfect I bought 2 different colors! Uniqlo may have good small size because it is originally Japanese.
  • Today's shopping journey:

    1. H&M I shop there often but usually at the 59th or SoHo stores. Today I went to the 5th Ave (near Union Square) store and it was so much better (not as crowded with people and the store was spacious). Some luck! I found several pair of pants there that seem to fit pretty well and hemming some of them for length might be easy enough for me to do myself.

    2. J. Crew I found a few pair of pants I liked that were a little big in the 0short and am considering trying the online petite versions. Anyone know how much smaller their petites are?

    3. Hiking pants. :( I've ordered the smallest available online and they are giant. Today I got help at Paragon and no luck. I think the last time I bought nylon outdoor pants I got kids, but none of the outdoor stores I tried carried kids stuff. Guess it will be sweatpants this weekend...

Has anyone had alterations done at the place on Flatbush across from Blockbuster, next to the Chinese and Patty joints?

Thanks for all the suggestions--it's been really helpful. I heart Brooklynian (we need a croc that says that!).
  • I picked up the 2 pair of pants for Economy Cleaners on 5th Ave today. They matched the thread on both pair and the hems look exactly like the originals. $11 per pair of pants. I will go back.
  • OpossumQueen wrote: 2. J. Crew I found a few pair of pants I liked that were a little big in the 0short and am considering trying the online petite versions. Anyone know how much smaller their petites are?
my info is a few years old on this, but my understanding is that the petites run 1 to 2 sizes smaller. if I were you, I'd order a couple of sizes - I think you can return to the stores.
  • Have you tried The Limited? They have a "Drew" fit that I really like, and basic pants come in short. I'm 5' 2" and like the way they fit.
  • Teckla wrote: Have you tried The Limited? They have a "Drew" fit that I really like, and basic pants come in short. I'm 5' 2" and like the way they fit.
I have the Drew. The length is great, but they hang off of me like a flour sack. I have no hips and a small frame I guess. I had several things that fit well then I got sick for a couple of weeks this summer and lost a few lbs...those few pounds were apparently in the pants area and now my clothes look like I'm a kid playing dress up.

The pricier boutiques and brands look to have stuff for small folks but my pocket book can't handle those places. So far, I'm fairly happy with my H & M stuff that I had altered, though only the "skinny/tapered leg" stuff fit me when I looked so I guess I have a "look" now :)

Teckla, you're name makes me smile. There was a girl at my junior high named Thekla, pronounced Tequila. It always cracked me up when someone would read her name as it looked "Thekla" and she would respond with "It's Tequila, bitch!". She was not amused. I'm laughing just remembering it...
  • Subject: the eternal search for the perfect pant

Hey, I also am petite and find most american size 0 and 2 to be a bit generous. In my experience, Bebe is a good bet sometimes (you can also do their online deal and avoid the store vibe if you so desire). Also believe it or not Forever 21 can work if you are selective (use the online store if you can and avoid the teen crowds if possible-also a good way to find the small sizes without having to dig through gargantuan piles). Good luck to you and if you find a good solution please share, the small petites have to stick together!
  • I second Uniqlo. Relatively inexpensive, most of the stuff I've found is well made, and it's the only place I've found where the petite-sized pant legs aren't too long. The trouble is actually finding xs sizes since they're usually cleaned out.
  • Thanks everyone! Keep the suggestions coming.

Favorite petite jeans and approx. cost? My biggest problem is my lack of hips :/

I used to have pants that fit just right (a few Levi's and some New York and Co. stuff) but a few rough rounds of food poisoning in succession right when I added weights back into my workout have put those pants around my knees. (That was a while back so I think this size will last a while).

I have some jeans that are fine for slumming, but I need some *nice* jeans. I tried some Ann Taylor Loft jeans that had a decent petite cut but they were too big. So, jeans?
  • i buy most of my clothes at the salvation army, but a lot of the stuff i see there looks SUPER tiny. (for me, i'm an 8. ok, lately i'm a ten.) i think that aside fromn out-of-style stuff, people tend to give away clothes when they've lost of gained weight, so there's lots of smaller and bigger.

i don't know how you feel about pre-owned, for me there's the thrill of the hunt.

try century 21 - they have those really expensive jeans for cheap - the ones that don't go past a size 8? you should be able to pick up a pair for under $50 and just have them shortened.
  • I prefer Gap jeans in ankle-length; they're sturdy, comfortable, affordable (around $70), and they look good. Granted, I'm not as svelte as you :) but I'm in the mid-range of sizes, so you may find a good fit in the smaller sizes.

If you want really cheap jeans, try Old Navy. I needed a black pair for a Halloween costume, and got them there for $30. They're not as good quality as Gap jeans though.

I keep hearing good things about Century 21. Where is it?
  • sprite wrote: I keep hearing good things about Century 21. Where is it?
there's one in bklyn at 80something and 8th ave, I believe, and one in downtown manhattan by the giant construction pit.
  • zara, fcuk, uniqlo would be my pick. The only downside is that uniqlo's xs sizes gets snapped up really fast. gap's decent..i have one pair, but have yet to find another. old navy was the worst for me, everything was huge with extra cloth - felt like i was in a burlap sack. Oh and forever 21 has good skinny jeans, the rest of their clothes are a bit kiddy, but the basics work just fine.
