Horrible tattoos

If you're the kind of person that "lives the life"--avowed sorta outsider who could care less about what others think--and/or your body art has a real significance to you, then whatever. Who I feel bad for are all those people that got tats 'cause it was cool' and now regret them. Or will.

As for the future, Gen X will be of grandparent age in the next 15 years. That should be fun to watch.

before I got my first tattoo, I drew it on my body with a permanent marker once every few months for like ... two years. finally went through with it. my second tattoo - something I'd been contemplating for years and finally got done when I had 3 hours to kill in san francisco. I've had tons of "wouldn't it be cool if?" tattoo ideas that have died their wee deaths - thinking for 5 minutes is helpful.

heck, I've been pondering for the last year or so whether or not I should get my first tattoo filled in solid black - the tribal thing is so early-90s, but then, that is what I picked and I still like it. I just wonder if I'd like it more in solid black ...

yes, it's so cool when I spot someone with a upc symbol tattooed on the back of their neck - wowee! what a tattoo! but shit, I wouldn't do it myself!

This is a family friend who had a tattoo put on his back in honor of my nephew -

Alafairnadia , I too did a lot of thinking/drawing/tweaking prior to getting each of my tattoos. I'm happy to say that each is special to me and I do not regret it at all.

They are very addictive. Although, I do question when a person becomes a collector rather than appreciating an art form. There is too much of a good thing, especially young kids who are getting tattoos from these small storefronts/newststand/jewelry operations and not from qualified artists.

I had a guy compliment my phoenix tattoo the other night (it's the biggest one I have and the most visible) and ask how much it cost. When I told him he said it was too expensive and showed me a tattoo he has that a friend did for him for about $50. He couldn't believe mine is over 2 years old, the lines are so fine and crisp. People do this all the time with me and I have to bite my tongue to keep from telling them, "There's a reason mine looks the way it does!"

I chose my artist based on work she'd done for a friend of mine (full sleeves) and the rest of her work. I don't understand people refusing to spend a little more for something that permanent. And walking into the first tattoo parlor you see is just asking for a shitty tattoo.

I have one tattoo that's 13 years old and still looks crisp and new. At the time, I looked around for several months on Usenet (rec.arts.bodyart) to find a good, reputable artist in my area.

I'm just now working on my second tattoo -- took me that many years to figure out where and what design I wanted. It's a really big leg piece, from my knee down to my ankle. We've just done the outline so far, and we start on the colors tomorrow; it's probably going to take two or three more two-hour sittings (that's about as much as I can afford to do at a time). This time I did a ton of web research first, and again found someone who came highly-recommended and had several really nice online portfolios. My artist for this one, Joy Rumore at Twelve 28 Tattoo in Wiliamsburg, has been wonderful to work with -- I totally recommend her to anyone who's thinking about getting a tattoo.

If you get the right artist, do proper aftercare as it heals, and then take good care of the tattoo (sunblock, etc.) from there on out they'll look great for a long time. I'm with you, Caseopele -- I never have been able to understand why anyone would cut corners on something that's going to be on their body permanently.

I thought the lawnmower tattoo on the guy's head was cute.

And the mustache tattoo video was funny, but oy, are Fox newscasters annoying!

I totally agree about the importance of really thinking and planning for a tattoo and then finding a really good tattoo artist to perfect that vision. My first tattoo is almost ten years old and it still looks as good as when I first got it. And, I still love it.
Just for the record, I also got a kick out of all those links. Homer might be the funniest!
