Stoned on St Marks...Be Alert
On Saturday night my friend--a gentle man-- on Underhill between Prospect and St. Mark's was walking on St. Mark's at 10:30 p.m. to pick up a takeout order at GEN on Washington when a group of teens startled him (to put it mildly) by suddenly hurling rocksdirectly at him. He ran to Gen and called 911.
A sad tale.

They need to amend the laws and make stiffer penalities for these houligans who have nothing better to do than cause disturbances and ruckus .Sick of the little bastards. They need to ship em to someplace like Siberia. In my day, I had to be in the house before sunset and I had respect for everyone not just the elderly.I couldnt even say the word damn. These runts in nowadays should have had my parents. They would be kept on the straight and narrow path cause that extension cord stung like a bee when any of us got out of hand which i could count on one hand.Child abuse my foot. They need a good beatdown when they do wrong. They have no fear of anything.Parents charged with child abuse if they breath too hard on them and the system lets them go as juvies after a few days in detention.whoopee.Why should they stop harassing and bothering people as long as there are minimal consequences?Sickens me to read what happened to this gentleman. these kids need a stern hand.

if that happened to me the only parts of my character that would get built would be aggression and antagonism, neither of which am i interested in cultivating
i find that little strip of st marks always prone to difficulty, it's where the water throwing was happening last summer and i always sense that the packs of kids that congregate there are prone to being problematic. -
Are you sure they were rocks? Lately that block and my block have been inundated with acorns. Whenever I walk on that block or even going down St. Marks I think someone is throwing something but I realized its the acorns falling.
If they were rocks that really sucks. -
Subject: Acorns or Rocks
they were rocks and not the seed of mighty oaks...and they were teens, not squirrels. -
Just for future reference... the guys at the parking garage on that block are pretty nice. If anything ever happens to you on that block, consider running in there -- I'm pretty sure they're open for 24 hours.

very similar thing happened to a friend of mine last week on St. Marks between vanderbilt and underhill. He was riding to my house on his bike, a kid shouted at him asking to see his Ipod, and when he ignored him a rock whizzed by his head. He wasn't hurt, just shook up. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if it was the same kids. THis happened o St. Marks across from the garage and the playground last week, late afternoon.

I think a more apt place to get stoned would be St Stephen's Pl. If we had one, that is. Apparently the nearest one is a bar in Valley Stream.

This stuff isn't a symptom of weak laws, it's simply what happens when people don't stand up for themselves. You can't rely on the government to protect you from schoolyard bullshit like this, what are we in the 3rd grade?? I'm not paying taxes to have cops escort you to buy sushi, nor to throw some kid in jail for doing what lots of kids do to other kids.
I could see protecting a woman, but a grown man? I'm sure he's a nice guy, but have some pride buddy, these are kids here.
These kids know that white yups are the easiest targets around, and so they get targeted. The least the guy could've done was gave an "ASSHOLES!!" or something back at them, it would at least show them the guy was defiant and not a wet noodle, make them less likely to do it again.
The city used to be a WHOLE lot worse than it is now and people were able to carry on with their lives. Come on now. -

The problem with screaming "Asshole!" now a days is that little creeps
now carry guns and shoot you for fighting back.
A draft would keep them at home crying under their beds wonder which foreign land they will be sent to die in.

I'm responsible for more death and destruction in "MY NAME" then anyone on this planet. I made war, famine and disease so populations would be kept under control. This countrys youth have way
too much. They need to be reminded what true suffering is. -
the incident described by the OP is awful.
but for the record, all this draft talk really turns my stomach.
is the proper response to the bad behavior of a few children to send a random percentage of their age cohort into danger?
also, should we really see the army as a punishment? soldiers as worthy of the same opprobrium as prisoners? should we ask the armed forces to absorb the result of the previous generation's lousy parenting?
do any of you have friends, family, etc. of draft age? remember, it goes pretty high now, especially if you're a doctor.
i don't remember the draft solving the crime problems of the vietnam era. -
sweet tea wrote: the incident described by the OP is awful.
Agreed. And even if it did "solve" the problem, it wouldn't make it right. Hell, I can use a screwdriver as a hammer in a pinch, but it doesn't make it the right tool for the job. I believe that the military doesn't have to be all the best and the brightest, although they should certainly be represented there. But it should absolutely NOT be the dregs, and what I have seen recently with them OK'ing sketchy pasts really concerns me, I would have the same concerns for police officers. These are people given enormous power and responsibility, they should be completely trustworthy. I definitely don't want rock throwers representing the US in foreign countries with firearms. Or locally, for that matter.

Well, that is pretty much my point. Are you arguing that the rock throwers would be BETTER? We need quality people to serve, not criminals of any type. -
Ok let's get this thread back on track. Where are these stoner kids buying their stash?

I never said what race the humans in this report were. Your uniformed prejudice is as dangerous as the stones.
And sometimes kids aren't kids anymore. When they become dangerous to law-abiding citizens.
I don't remember worrying about being stoned (in the tossing heavy objects meaning) 40 years ago in this neighborhood. -

kids if they get caught should be beaten like in singapore. not juv hall or other nonsense.
after that they should be sent to clean up garbage and graffiti. -

I know for a fact that the victim in the story was a white yup (with a slim chance of them being an Asian). Go ahead and tell me I'm wrong. I dare you. 8)

You're right, people didn't get stoned 40yrs ago in this neighborhood, because people relied on more efficient things, like knives, guns, ball bats, etc., to get their point across. -

All kidding aside, there is a time and a place to stand up for yourself, but it's hard to say what was the case in this instance. Five 13-year-olds is one thing, five 17-year-olds is something entirely different. -

I too have been "stoned" on St. Marks. And Carlton, and Vandy, and Prospect Place, and Flatbush...as many streets as it takes for me to stumble home.
