i find that little strip of st marks always prone to difficulty, it's where the water throwing was happening last summer and i always sense that the packs of kids that congregate there are prone to being problematic.

I think a more apt place to get stoned would be St Stephen's Pl. If we had one, that is. Apparently the nearest one is a bar in Valley Stream.

This stuff isn't a symptom of weak laws, it's simply what happens when people don't stand up for themselves. You can't rely on the government to protect you from schoolyard bullshit like this, what are we in the 3rd grade?? I'm not paying taxes to have cops escort you to buy sushi, nor to throw some kid in jail for doing what lots of kids do to other kids.

I could see protecting a woman, but a grown man? I'm sure he's a nice guy, but have some pride buddy, these are kids here.

These kids know that white yups are the easiest targets around, and so they get targeted. The least the guy could've done was gave an "ASSHOLES!!" or something back at them, it would at least show them the guy was defiant and not a wet noodle, make them less likely to do it again.

The city used to be a WHOLE lot worse than it is now and people were able to carry on with their lives. Come on now. :roll:

The problem with screaming "Asshole!" now a days is that little creeps
now carry guns and shoot you for fighting back.

A draft would keep them at home crying under their beds wonder which foreign land they will be sent to die in.

is the proper response to the bad behavior of a few children to send a random percentage of their age cohort into danger?

also, should we really see the army as a punishment? soldiers as worthy of the same opprobrium as prisoners? should we ask the armed forces to absorb the result of the previous generation's lousy parenting?

do any of you have friends, family, etc. of draft age? remember, it goes pretty high now, especially if you're a doctor.

i don't remember the draft solving the crime problems of the vietnam era.

i submit that what you suggest is in fact another example of the problem. i understand standing up for yourself, but i'm not sure encouraging escalation is a good idea when a single person faces a mob (even/especially if they're junior high school kids).

I don't remember worrying about being stoned (in the tossing heavy objects meaning) 40 years ago in this neighborhood.

You're right, people didn't get stoned 40yrs ago in this neighborhood, because people relied on more efficient things, like knives, guns, ball bats, etc., to get their point across.

I too have been "stoned" on St. Marks. And Carlton, and Vandy, and Prospect Place, and Flatbush...as many streets as it takes for me to stumble home.
