The Association of Indians in America celebrates its annual Deepavali festival at South Street Seaport, showcasing the depth, complexity and beauty of Indian culture and heritage.
The festival comprises traditional folk and classical dance, arts and crafts, Q&A sessions about Indian culture, exhibitions and a children's area with painting and games. Food stalls sell affordable treats from different regions of India and at nightfall there is a spectacular firework display over the East River at Pier 16.

Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is one of the most important festivals of the Hindu year. Among many other things, it celebrates the return of Rama from his 14 years of exile, and like many other Hindu festivals it is celebrated in as many fashions as there are people who celebrate it.

The common name of the festival means "row of lights" and traditionally lamps of all sorts are a common sight, as are fireworks and firecrackers. Besides celebrating the victory of good over evil and light over darkness, the little flickering lights also provide refuge and solace in the face of the approaching winter.
