Got into fight because my dog pissed on sidewalk
So into a major argument this weekend because my dog pissed in front of someone’s house. Here’s what happened: I was walking my (large) dog as I always do in my neighborhood in the north slope. I have one of those really big goofy friendly dogs that never causes any problems and most people stop and pet him on a daily basis. I try to be a good dog owner and ALWAYS pick up after my dog. Well, a few days back I was walking my dog and he stopped in front of a house that had a lot of vegetation growing out of the front fence…you know, the kind that hasn’t been maintained much and shrubs are taking over half the sidewalk. Anyway, my dog starts to pee on the shrubs (btw, I usually try to always get him to pee on the trees away from the house, but in this case, one he starts, it’s hard to pull him away) and the owner comes out and starts yelling at me. I usually try to avoid arguments at all costs, so apologized and started walking away. As I was walking away, he kept yelling obscenities and then said, “Next time I see you, I’m going to fucking kill your dog”. This is when I got upset and confronted the man and told him that it was completely unnecessary to make some stupid statements and that I had already apologized so he should have let it go. He went on yelling and came really close to hitting me, when a passerby broke up the argument.
Here’s my question: Are there any laws against my dog peeing on the streets (we were clearly on the sidewalk and not trespassing by any means)? Has any one else ever experienced anything like this before? Was I wrong in arguing back with this guy?

Subject: Never Wrong To Argue
I don't know whether you're ever wrong to share your opinion with someone who has a different one than yours although sometimes it might not be wise.
In order to avoid those types of situations I always try to walk with my dogs on the outside part of the sidewalk. That way when they do happen to urinate/defecate it's close to the curb and not to someone's front steps or fence. It also means that fewer people would have to walk across any remaining residue, etc...
I also bring a water bottle with me whenever I walk our dogs. The primary reason is so our dogs can get a drink while we're out walking but also to clean up the remnants of any mess that the bag might have missed. So far it seems to have helped us avoid any of the conflicts that you described.
I've often thought about the confrontation you described. If people are making a serious effort to grow flowers and to take care of the foliage by the sidewalk I will do my best to keep the dogs away from it. However in instances where it's quite obvious that the residents don't really seem to care about the overgrown weeds in front of their place I'm a little less vigilant with where my dogs do their business. I mean why should I care more than the resident about the weeds that they have left to fester? -

Thanks for your response LimeStoneKid. It's always good to get a different perspective after something like this just happened. I appreciate it. -

@ parkslopeboy...I should probably have been a little clearer with my response. Well at least part of it. I think I would have reacted in much the same manner that you did.
Since I know I'll react in a confrontational manner that's why I try to walk my dog on the outside. My wife doesn't seem to get this and when we walk the dogs together she always lets the dog wander to the inside. She seems to forget that it will most likely be me that has to deal with any angry confrontations from a home-owner and not her. -
I actually had someone come out and yell at me when my little Pug was attempting to pee on a dirt patch under a tree on the outer sidewalk next to the street. Guess you can never please everyone. I let her finish and quickly walked away with the lady still yelling at me!
Howdy, Stranger!
