I'm sorry. -
The $185 (actually it will be $185 plus the cost of whatever ticket you find on your windshield; but you don't have to pay that ticket while you're there) is bad but not nearly as bad as the large chunk of your life you're about to give up standing in line watching the most inefficient office in the history of inefficiency. While I was standing in line attempting to keep my head from exploding I noticed that, in order to obtain the proper forms, one of the workers had to walk the perimeter of the office no fewer than 3 times per person with a towed vehicle. He made no attempt to do this quickly (not that I would, if I had to walk 25 miles per day because it was impossible to keep the right paperwork at my desk). At one point, a female worker started using a typewriter. Yes, a typewriter. I was unaware these things existed outside of museums in 2007. If you're really lucky, once you actually reach the front of the line, you'll get to make a trip to your car to get your registration and then be allowed to cut the line when you come back. Unfortunately, nobody will explain this to the people in the line who are threatening you with violence because they think you're illegitimately cutting ahead of them. All told, I waited in that line for 90 minutes. When I got there, only 6 people were ahead of me. A visit to this place could turn Dennis Kucinich into a Libertarian.
One way to make your life suck less if you get towed again:

This way you can at least find your car without phoning into the bureaucratic hell. -
The entire city is a tow away zone. You don't have to have outstanding tickets to get towed. If the NYPD Traffic tow comes by and you have a ticket on your windshield for "no standing" (or anything else) the tow operator is gonna have you on the hook in about 15 seconds.

Well I went to get my car (after work) the line was long and the place was extremely hot. The people that were there to help looked tired, hot and mean. everybody on line was complaining about the entire situation and how they were gonna complain to mayor bloomberg....
So there's this T on the floor and signs that say form a line @ the T and don't come to the window until you are called. (scary).
I got my car and discovered that the ticket was for no standing ( which I am going to fight) it was too late to take pictures but I will.... 185 for my troubles and 115 for the dumb ticket what a racket. -
Here's a tip...
Read the signs carefully, if you park in a non standing anytime zone expect to be towed. Many times the non standing zone is there for a reason i.e. in order for the bus or fire trucks to have room to turn. -
If you left it overnight, it might be due to alternate side street parking?
