Volunteering

though we aren't in Ditmas Park - I live here and volunteer for Club Loco (in the slope) ... we are looking for young adult volunteers (just your age) to act as chaperones once a month at our events... It's basically a rock club for teens ages 14-20 and parents aren't allowed -- so while my kid goes to shows - I can't volunteer to be on premises so instead I do some fundraising and publicity stuff ...
The October date is tomorrow ... runs from 7:30-11pm though volunteers should get there 30 minutes early.
Interested? send me an email -

there's a group called Sustainable Flatbush that I'm sure could use help!

it's great that you want to get involved in the community and be active.

On Saturday, October 20th from 10:00am to noon, Flatbush Residents will team up with the Church Avenue BID, CAMBA and Teens from the 70th Precinct Explorers Program as well as Community Officers to clean up grafitti in our neighborhood. CAMBA is supplying the materials. We are supplying the backyard to meet and have a snack. Make a difference. Meet your neighbors. Get your children involved in this service to our community. Call Mark Dicus at CAMBA - 718-282-2500 x234 for more information. Rain anytime on the 20th will cancel this event.

You could contact the Flatbush Development Corp (google em) to see if they have any volunteer opportunities.
Also, Brooklyn hospitals and nursing homes need volunteers. It is especially cool if you have a talent and can lead patients in crafts, or sing/play music for them. But they probably need help in day-to-day things too. Or even just pop in to read to patients. The hospital websites usually have "Volunteer Opportunities" sections. But also look up local nursing homes, which probably get much fewer offers from volunteers, and need volunteers all the more.
For quid pro quo volunteer work, you could become a member of the Flatbush Food Co-op on Cortelyou Road. You volunteer there for a certain number of hours weekly or monthly (you decide how many hours you want to volunteer) and you get a discount on your purchases. (You also get a 3% discount just for being a member who does not volunteer.) They let you do fun stuff like fill bags with snacks and put price tags on the products with that nifty price tag gun...
