Farmer's Market Must-haves — Brooklynian

Farmer's Market Must-haves

Subject: Farmer's Market Must-haves

One of my favorite items at the GAP market is the (seasonal) strawberry cider. That stuff is amazing. I get other stuff there, too but that is my favorite!

And I miss Honey Dog--the aussie/bc that was always under the table at one of the honey stands. I think I bought more honey products than I would have otherwise because I always had to go pet her (I think her name was Mic). She was at least 18 years old and so sweet.

What else is awesome at that (or another market)?

Comments

  • What used to be awesome were the grilled turkey treats
from the DiPaola farm... the guy would set it up complete
with a separate tray for the dogs... but the guy who used
to do this is no longer there

in it's place is a sign "Samples Are Not for Dogs"

  • I like the Evolutionary Organics stand, parkside, kinda in the middle by the road, often next to Cato Farms cheese. They have the freshest freaky greens I've ever had and ever hope to have -- it you like stuff with a kick, try their purple mustard greens raw. It's like wasabi...
Don't be put off by the prices -- greens are lightweight, and the super high quality is actually worth it.

The fish stand is awesome, as is the Tellos egg lady.
Sometimes there's a goat stand (parkside, closer to the library) with super fresh cheese and (god help me) goat ricotta that was made at 2 in the morning market day. It's way better than Polly-o!
Cato Farms rocks the cow cheeses.

The pork and lamb and occasional stewing hens from Flying Pig are all fab.

The only thing I really miss from the Union Sq market in the city is the guys with tons of different chilis and obscure herbs (northside of market, near B&N)

Wow--I can't believe I've missed that stand the times I've been. I must have been too focused on getting my bicolor corn fix from a stand (near the Coffee Shop) that had the best corn I've had since leaving the deep south.
  • mr. kessler (at the treelicious stand) is my homeboy. good apples and peaches and cider, too.

for veggies i like the stand all the way in the northwest corner. usually i get tomatoes from the monster stand in the northeast, though, since they have them cheaper by the bag.

love the milk guys and the fish folk. also love the stick-obsessed dog who hangs out by the vegan bakery stand, although the baked goods there look like playdough. (i hope they don't make the dog be vegan, although i suppose they probably do.)
  • I love Blue Moon for the best fish in the city, and the egg lady.
  • Not completely on-topic, but you farmer's market fans will probably dig this.

My Flickr friend Ranjit -- he also took the photos that are in the Atlantic/Pacific station in the corridor on the way to the Q platform -- does scans of his weekly purchases:
