boycotts

i was planning on buying my girlfriend a new dress this week, and want to get her a nice cocktail dress from loom on seventh ave. Is the boycott still on, or should i go to someplace in manhattan or new jersey instead? I dont have time to check this board so much, cause i have a very busy schedule(I'm an actor, and I go to alot of auditions and table readings) Is there a list of places that are currently under boycott?thanx for all the help

  • I remember hearing some people say that Loom sucks, but I don't recall a boycott. But what the heck - let's add them to the list:

    OFFICIAL Daily Slope BOYCOTT LIST
    -------------------------------------------

Loom (for pissing off one customer)

Bruce Ratner (for not building his stadium at the Armory)

Marty Markowitz (for his relentless occupation of Prospect Park West)

Häagen Dazs (for bringing umlauted fascist corporate bullyboy fatcat ice cream chainstore death-culture to 7th Avenue. Shame!!)

The "Freshëns" yogurt stand at JFK (for copying Häagen Dazs's willfully obnoxious and wildly improbable use of umlauts... and for yogurt that probably contains no actual milk product)

    Ben & Jerry's (natch)

    Edy's (ditto)

Pathmark private label ice cream (Rocky Road only)
  • Fifth Avenue Cat Clinic (various - including one inexperienced vet, numerous bad experiences and more than one dead cat). I know this is a bit of a joking list, but I'm serious about this one.

    Rite Aid
    - see above.

    HA!

    This made my morning.
  • Grocery Boycott Sublist

FreshDirect (for destroying Mother Earth with exhaust fumes and cardboard)

    Fairway (sellouts!)

    D'Agostino (yuppies!)

Key Foods on 7th (sellouts! nice beer wall, though)

Park Slope Food Co-op (for inefficient labor practices including mass microemployment of overqualified already-employed workers, thus driving up real unemployment rates among the lower socioeconomic strata, while simultaneously driving up real wages, which exerts inflationary pressure on--oh just trust me its very complex and you should go ask doctorj but be sure to ask escap for clarification)
  • wanting to chip in on the list, though mine are mostly in other hoods so it's my general boycott:

    target (birth control, et alia)

    rite-aid (ditto)

    anthropologie (rick santorum)

    urban outfitters (rick santorum)

    domino's pizza (operation rescue)
  • Might as well just add Met Food on 7th for their high prices and Steve's C-Town for....and be done with it.

I'll never buy groceries in this town again!

why c-town. you know i love the c-town!
  • oh, and master wok, for the cockroach that ran by my head in the rest-room
  • who doesn't love the c-town?

    Who needs the Quickie Mart?
  • but you put them on your list. :(:(:(

you know how i feel about them... i love them.
  • Not Park Slope, but...

Key Food on Washington for dangerous slippery floors causing big honkin' ugly injuries!
  • Conneticut Muffin for being a stroller parking lot and a haven for rich white women to discuss how hard it is to be rich white women.

Loki Lounge for being geographically misplaced--sorry, but Bay Ridge is six miles THAT WAY. Also, highest ratio of overgelled Gotti hairdos in zip code.

The Tea Lounge for creating an environment where creepy guys think they might get laid by getting you to bring your laptop over to their house so they can "install" the new version of photoshop. Also, WTF is up with those couches? Am I drinking overpriced coffee in a squat?

Can I give a thumbs up to Starbucks, because it's always a please to see all those self-righteous folks sneaking inside to get a pumpkin spice latte while hiding their faces. BUSTED!
  • In all seriousness, try Serene Rose, Kiwi or even Bird for a better selection anyway. Ive had great luck with dresses at Serene Rose. The ownser has a great eye and will tell you what does and doesn't work for you
  • I agree, Serene Rose is great and the owner is really nice and will help you. Bird is so expensive.

If you can check out Century 21 - they have some really nice designer dresses at extremely reasonable prices. (There is one in Downtown Manhattan and also one in Bay Ridge Brooklyn).
  • Personally, I boycott bird because they sell fur. I can get similar quality at anthropologie with a clear conscience. I can't stand the thought of contributing to the fur industry in any way.

man, i wish i could still shop at anthropologie with a clear conscience. those were the days.

thanks, brooklynian, for RUINING MY HAPPINESS!!

    (exit, sobbing)

I boycott Bird because I can't afford it.
I boycott Baby Bird because I think it is ridiculous to pay $45 for a onesie to be thrown up all over.
  • Have you been to OAK, on President St?

Have they done anything bad yet?

there's no clear conscience at anthropologie, unless you shake the belief that being gay is as bad as bestiality and incest.
  • Brooklyn Industries for charging $30 for a screen printed teeshirt.

www.shopbop.com has a good refund/exchange policy -- very helpful for those who shop for fussy others.
  • I agree SereneRose is pretty nice place!
  • Ok, so I know the Food Coop is on the list, but with a little imagination, ingenuity and time, I saw these really great hemp napkins that might be strung together with some lace I saw from the Salvation Army on Atlantic at 3rd to make a great halter dress. I saw a great pattern on www.sewingpatterns.com. (That is, if you don't have any other pressing issues, like a huge move or anything) Because I think your girlfriend would like that better than anything you could buy at any of these places anyway.
  • or you could buy her lovely pottery.:lol::lol:
  • Uncle "Pico de Gallo-less" Moe's
  • Could anyone elaborate on why they don't like some of the above places, I am apparently WAY out of the loop as far as the bad things corporate chains and some of the local stores and such do. Seriously, I don't mean this in a tongue-in-cheeck kinda way, I am actually out of the loop :(
  • after reading this list, i'm gonna go naked.

I second that, but really just as an excuse to go naked! (as long as the weather stays warm that is! ha!)
