Ugly building at Fulton and Classon — Brooklynian

Ugly building at Fulton and Classon

So the ugliest building in the world seems to be finally occupied. But by the uniformity of the window drapes it seems that it is an institutional use now. Anyone got info on this? I had hoped that a well-built development would have brought some much needed energy into our conrer of the hood, but when I toured the apartments of say a year ago and saw the shoddy workmanship I knew they would have problems selling. What with the rezoning and all, one would think this little area on the border of Bed-Stuy and Clinton Hill would be picking up (my attempt to rename it as Putnam Square was met with universal derision). I can't imagine the huge Universal Church going up on Fulton east of Classon will really add anything but Sunday double parkers to the neighborhood. Thoughts? Or shall we continue with our discussion of why white people have cross the line?

  • Cant believe they allow occupancy in that monstrosity.I recall the day my sister told the construction guys that the mix match bricks werent evenly being applied and didnt looked leveled. We got a stare of death. That being said, didnt know Universal Church is being built there. Is that the one that was located near to downtown ? No, please...no more discussion on why whites are moving into the neighborhood..

No, let's not talk about white people; that's intolerant, and everyone is welcome here.

Instead, let's complain about churchgoers. That's a MUCH more productive discussion.

    /sarcasm
  • dear BedStuydoodliedee - /sarcasm back. [Cause we don't have enough threads going now on why white people shouldn't dare to live in certain areas or why black people never kept the hood up or whatever.] Begone with you and take you little doggie too...

Oh that felt good for me - di it feel good for you?

Anyone have any info on the corner property/ (Fulton/Classon). And am I right about the other big construction being a church?
  • My wife has always identified that property as belonging to the universalist church, I can't remember why she knows that, I dimly remember a sign saying that. But I do know it's a big big church, they'll be a lot of traffic here on Sunday. My biggest gripe is that the churchgoers are never concerned about the neighborhood. They usually don't throw beer bottles and condoms into my front yard, but I bet they would if they repeal some of the commandments, and they're so goddamn cheery all the time, what's up with that?
  • There was a post on Brownstoner over a year ago that mentioned the property being converted to a church. Don't remember much more than that.

I think that a church is a great option. The property will be nicely kept, it means that there will only be a large influx of traffic one day a week, and for the most part useage outside of Sundays will be during reasonable hours (no cars pulling up at 5am or 11pm). Let's think about all the other options and count our lucky stars.

Regarding that other building on the opposite corner, it reminds me of the houses my cousin used to build with lego sets when he wouldn't follow the directions and insisted on using every piece available. They would always end up with the windows at strange heights, the doorways to nowhere and a pine tree on the roof.
  • I think we are talking about different places. The church I am talking about is a new steel framed structure going up on Fulton and Claver. As a church goer I don't really want to start a thread on why churches are good or bad (famous last words), but what my little corner of god's green earth needs is a more committed residents (whether they be owners or renters) and more commercial establishments. A huge building which is empty and closed for most of the week perpetuates the dead zone on Fulton between Grand and Franklin. It has not, unfortunately been my experience that the smaller churches around here take care of their property (the larger churches do, for the most part). Nor does an influx of people from outside of the neighborhood driving their cars and double parking with impunity on Sundays add a lot to my experience (despite what my Georgia-born boyfriend says, however, there are worse sins than double parking).

But I really want to know about the "lego" building on Fulton and Classon. Do I have to go and post on Brownstoner?
  • I present to you...
    THE SHAME OF FULTON

Sorry, I was thinking about the empty building on the west side of Fulton and Classon next to the park. I've been told that was being converted to a church. That building is caty-corner to the SOB noted above. Didn't realize that there was another church going up over near the triangle as well.
  • I still remain opposed to any and all shoddy new construction, and this building is the very worse I have ever seen and should be demolished immediately (this is when someone accuses me of being anti economic growth in the "hood"). This building is an insult to the community and anyone who would consider living there, and it can't be safe. How did they get the permit to build this.
  • It also looks taller than most of the residential buildings in the neighborhood, is that legal?
  • I hate this building everytime I pass it I see RED.... Who approved this thing... It is the worlds most ugly building.... HORROR.... I rather have an empty lot...
