As a resident of prospect park south and unsure about the rent_safety correlation, I have some questions. Falling victim to a realty that said this was an "up and coming neighborhood" at certain times I feel as though I need to limit my time spent beyond the door of my APT. Not new to violence in the hood (from Rochester, upstate which has a higher per capita rate of murder than nyc) I feel confused about how radical the change is from here to a few blocks in any direction. How can I possibly move across the park? What kind of increase in rent am I looking at, and can I save by sticking to this realtor?

    I'm not sure exactly where you are, what you are paying, where you want to be, and what you want to pay to be there. I would recommend Craigslist to ballpark it though, or the rent-o-meter site. http://www.rentometer.com

    Where are you living? Windsor Terrace? Kensington? Which Avenue are you by?

    Prospect Park South (Ditmas Park) is definitely dead at night. Its got some cool spots like Vox Pop, but you will probably have to hang tight for full blown night life--if it does even develop there. As my husband pointed out, a lot of the exact same spots that are on Cortelyou Rd have been there since the 80s. (not that there's anything wrong with that I must add)

    so it sounds like you don't feel safe there, so move, don't be a prisoner in your own apt. Better to live in a smaller place or with roomies than avoiding going out at night or not wanting to come home late. The block to block changes are a reality of New York City.

    How can you possibly move across the park? I'm not sure what you are trying to ask.

    Can you save money sticking with the same real estate agent? you have to ask him or her but probably not, and sticking to one agent is too limiting.


    Check craiglist and see where the rents are in you budget and then go walk around before you commit. Only you can decide how safe you will feel

    i think they live on the eastern side of the park. it is more quiet and has higher rates of crime than vs west side.

    i suggest you goto kensington. its slighty close to park but safer at night.

    Thanks, Rentometer.com was helpful, we are roughly located at ocean and church, paying slightly under a grand for a studio. There is a high level of leverage in this area belonging to the dealers, and that doesn't bother me all too much, they know who the civilians are. However diversity in my environment is crucial to me, and this location offers that in limited doses. I appreciate the responses.
