Re: Crown Heights and Prospect Heights boards — Brooklynian

Re: Crown Heights and Prospect Heights boards

Just checking in after being away for a few months. There boards seem to be getting less fun and more mean. Blech. Hopefully behavior on these two boards will become less nasty and generally more upbeat again soon.

ITA, leet. There's been a lot of really nasty personal sniping going on between a handful of users and I've found the general tone of the conversations really unpleasant lately. I haven't been posting as much as usual because of it, and I suspect it's kept others from posting as much too. I wish folks would stop going for the jugular and stop perpetuating it by responding in kind every time someone's snippy towards them. :(

I agree, and with apologies to Gandhi would exhort _everyone_ to be the change they would like to see in the board. The more examples of the behavior we would like to see being modeled, the better. I totally understand not wanting to post though, and often feel like that myself when it gets deep in here.
  • I think "mean" is okay if the delivery is appropriate. George carlin was/is mean, Dennis Leary is mean, Lewis Black is mean, but they are well articulated. Sometimes being rude and expressive can work together with excellent outcomes. Sometimes it wakes people up and other times it makes the poster look horrendous. Nonetheless, meanness can be useful at times.

The world is not a utopia, and it takes care of itself. I have definitely seen this board get way, way meaner than it is at this point. But, when it does get mean, and people (many, not just one or two) gang up on someone, there is usually just cause for it. That's just my take on things, and I DID just read "I'm Okay, I'm Okay".
  • I'm not talking about rude and expressive, I don' t necessarily have a problem with that. It this the pervasive nasty personal sniping that is referenced above that is the problem. It doesn't serve to advance _any_ discussion, period.

Yah, what's so great about Oregon anyway?
  • Mama, who told you that? :?

Personally, I think people confuse satire and sarcasm. Satire has a point. Satire can wake people up. Sarcasm is just mean.

George Carlin wasn't mean. He attacks the injustices of our day with biting satire. Big difference.

Personal attacks, on the other hand, are never justifiable. And no one deserves to be personally attacked. And I feel that way even about people I've come to dislike on the board.

I will attack your point. I will NOT attack YOU. I think that is a vital distinction that a lot of people are missing, and if they understood the difference, the world would be a happier place.
  • Whatever. It's amazing how it comes back to YOU!

"I'm Okay, I'm Okay" at work again
  • Oh fer Pete's sake. Do you two have to do this in THIS thread too?

It is required under the charter.

  • "I'm wondering, KWAC, if you go onto all the other boards on Brooklynian and diss their neighborhoods too? Do you go onto the Bed-Stuy and East New York boards just to disparage the people living there too"?
I did not make any disparaging remarks about the Neighborhood, I've only stated facts. If you'd like to search through my posts on your free time to support your point I'd love to see. As for posting on every single topic and every single board on Brooklynian, No I do not post unless something is relavent.
"KWAC, I never said that cops were assholes, just that *some* cops *act* like assholes within the community".
    Very Articulate Bangledesh
  • relevance? I mean, really.

Those were valid questions, not attacks. And I have a right to post on any thread I want to.

And LeeHo, I notice you never contribute anything of value. All you ever do is attack people.
  • MOD NOTE: if you've posted on the CH board and referenced another user in the last 3 days, you may or may not be under warning of getting a time out. how to figure this out: did your post referencing another user employ sarcasm, name calling, or outright meanness? did you try to cover it up with flowery language, or emotional terminology? being an asshole doesn't just require outright asshattery - you can be that jerk that hides behind 4 syllable words. YOU ARE ALL WARNED!
  • Alfy, is right on this one. It's obvious that no one will get anywhere on this thread anymore. Everyones stated their opinions and good or bad, they're sticking to them. Let's all just back away.....

    8)
  • Whatthefuckever! (That was five syllables)!
  • Nice. Real nice.

    Sorry, leet.
