So, what's the deal with Second Life? — Brooklynian

So, what's the deal with Second Life?

Subject: So, what's the deal with Second Life?

Is it for geeks who don't have a real life?
Are you or anyone you know a resident?
Is it fun? Do you spend lots of money on virtual shit?

Just curious more than anything else....

  • I don't know a better explanation than this, also read Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash.

I recently saw a newly written symphony debut on Second Life and the Ford Foundation has recently set up shop. CSI/NY just did a show where a murderer was tracked in Second Life. Sweden has opened an embassy!
  • Wow- good info, better explained on WIKI then the actual site itself.
I can't believe colleges are setting up shop on the "Info Islands"- very interesting.....

    Then I found this:

    Awesome.
  • Did you see it referenced on The Office this week? :)

I checked it out a few months back and it just didn't appeal to me at all. I might have enjoyed it more, but it was super-laggy and slow on my computer, and beyond not having the patience for that, the handful of people I talked with on it were kinda dumb. Maybe if I'd had better luck with the software and the interactions I'd have explored it further, but I ended up only spending a couple of hours looking around before uninstalling the software.
  • Get A First Life is hilarious. Here's an article in today's NY Post about a federal law suit on Second Life - http://www.nypost.com/seven/10282007/news/regionalnews/unreality_byte.htm
