In Search of an Oral Surgeon..
My dentist told me I need a tooth pulled. Rather than have to shlep back and forth to long island (I've been using this guy since I was a kid), I was wondering if any neighborhood locals had someone they could recommend..
since my insurance has no dental coverage I have to pay out of pocket, which I already know is going to hurt. So I am really in search of a doctor who is trustworthy, reputable, and won't rip me off.
any suggestions please..!?

Dr. Baker at Park Slope Oral Surgery on Union St. between 6th and 7th. Great doctor, I'm a big baby when it comes to those things and I hardly felt a thing.

Here's a link to one of the past threads about this:

I have to back up the kind words about Dr. Chionchio on Union Street. I had my wisdom teeth extracted a few years ago. He was great, especially for this wimpy cry-baby. He was gentle, and was great with explaining each step to make me more comfortable. When I started to panic a bit at the beginning (I'm not ashamed to admit I freaked a bit), he was patient... and then the gas took effect.
About as good as it could get, methinks. -
I totally agree with the above posters -- Dr. Baker AND Dr. Chionchio are the best! I have used both of them (they are in the same office) and so has my significant other and both my daughters. They are GREAT!

What about the office staff there? I had an appointment to get a wisdom tooth pulled but turned out there was a problem with my dental insurance. I found the 2 women I spoke to there to be less than friendly even before the issue with my insurance came up. Since the problem with my insurance has been resolved I still need to get the tooth pulled and am considering going back there. I just wonder if I'll receive the same treatment.

Hi Caseopele
I can only speak for myself but I haven't had any trouble with the office staff there (although insurance problems have never come up so far). As a matter of fact, I personally had no appointment there one time and just walked in because I was in pain -- everyone there was terrific, and I was able to see the dentist within an hour. Same thing happened with one of my daughters. (We have Irish teeth!!! so we are always having trouble with teeth!). Perhaps you should call them and see if they have the same attitude, but I really haven't had any problems so far. Good Luck

Caseopele.. Yeah thinking the office ladies were having a bad day.. Afew years back I was having some painful problems and was able to even get an emergency appointment on a Saturday. Once in the office the ladies were professional but friendly. More important the Doctors are terrific and responsive. They call personally after a proceedure on the next day to see how you are doing. If the insurance thing is in place I would give this practice another try.

I'm going to give them another try since they've gotten such good reviews here. Plus, they're a few blocks from my job so I can go before work. Thanks guys!

thanks for all the suggestions guys! I looked into Dr. Baker's office. The office was very nice on the phone, and very straightforward with the procedure and prices. However, my dentist recommended another Doctor, who's prices were a lot cheaper. (Since I have xrays already, the extraction and consultation is going to be at least $100 cheaper--making the trek to Bay Ridge worthwhile) Also, after consulting with me, he was willing to make time after that appointment to pull my tooth out (a big deal when you're in pain!)
Dr. Bigregorio in Bay Ridge

Thought I'd forward this along for everyone's reference...
And I can report back to offer more feedback on this guy if y'all would like! -
Dr. Chioncio at Union St. Maxillofacial. He's amazing and definitely great for the faint of heart!

I'm sure all the slope Drs are great...I called Dr Baker's office a week or so back--the staff was very friendly and informative--and straight up which I appreciated.
I decided to follow my own dentist's recommendation though in the end. Although the staff seemed very "brooklyn"--not very proper speaking, using some fowl language around the patients,(which I oddly found somewhat comforting), they were nice, professional, and made me feel like it was all going to be okay in the end!
i also saved $300 in comparison to baker's office thus far. I have to go back in a few months for an even follow-up...but I imagine I will be saving a lot more by taking the train ride out of the neighborhood.
Also, this area in bay ridge must be dentist's row or something--it was brownstone after brownstone of dentists, oral surgeons, and cosmetic dental offices! (between 5th and 6th by 77th). thought I'd forward all this info along. as much as I love the slope (and the convenience!), its good to know about other doctors who are accessible, affordable, and recommended! -
Subject: VERY BROOKLYN?
very "brooklyn"--not very proper speaking, using some fowl language around the patients????
THIS IS VERY "BROOKLYN"?
I HOPE YOU ARE KIDDING WITH THIS STATEMENT. -
please don't get all worked up..
i meant in that stereotypical--forgettaboutit kinda way, with thick brooklyn accents.
i've lived here for a few years, and I love park slope...but i've noticed many people in the neighborhood are not native to brooklyn (like myself), and there are not many folk with thick bk accents around town. and they certainly don't curse often, in comparison to the local people/businesses deeper into bk--from what I noticed.
park slope is beauuuutiful. but i do not find it to contain many people who one might define to SOUND like they are native to brooklyn.
regardless, it was just a review for those who might want to know of an oral surgeon in bk who is subway accessible, especially if you are looking to save some bucks but still want a reliable dr. -

Natstar.. Sorry the poison darts are being shot at you BUT you reveal yourself to not being a real live adopted Brooklynite if you even imply that part of your decision about an oral surgeon had to do with Brooklyn accents and a little fowl language. Native brooklynites pride themselves on maintaing that hometown edge! And we embrace those who find such adorable and/or intellectually superior.

Ack!
Fowl: A bird, such as the duck, goose, turkey, or pheasant, that is used as food or hunted as game.
Foul: 6. Of a vulgar or obscene nature: foul language.

1. i was on heavy dosages of vicodin when i typed that up. why are folks getting worked up over spelling? lame.
2. i LOVE bk accents. my family is from bk. however, my fam is not from from the slope (although my grandparents did live on berkeley and 6th after WW2). it is a known fact that park slope is a neighborhood compiled of many nyc transplants. people laugh when i say I'm from park slope--as if it is not REAL brooklyn! however, I love this neighborhood, and do not care.
3. i was informing the ppl on the park slope msg board that by leaving the slope, there is a huge strip of dentists/oral surgeons/cosmetic drs, etc. in bay ridge. i went to this dr. based on a recommendation--as stated earlier. not based on accents or any of that. i merely stated their accents and low-key bk attitude was comforting.
ok, end rant.

I hope you know I was only kidding, natstar. I had every intention of letting the fowl thing go, but nubnu used it and then veets used it. And that was just too much for me! Please know I meant no disrespect, honestly, I've done stuff like that with my mom on instant messenger. I figured the turkey pic would be better than, "OMG, you used the WRONG word!!!1111!!1one!!!" Because I hate people like that!!1one1!!

Been here a long time... most of my life...and perhaps based on that I seem to have people in my life who are native Brooklynites or have been here so long that the gods and goddesseses of Brooklyn have adopted them.
I can understand the influences of Vocodin! I also know that choosing an oral surgeon based on saving afew bucks (make that even afew hundred bucks) turns out not to be a good decision.
I also know that choosing an oral surgeon based on the regional accents the staff people sport during a phone conversation may not be the best decision. I admit I might be inclined to choose the oral surgeon if THEY had a Brooklyn accent..and credentials on the wall that showed they went through primo training.
I also know that someone who posts a picture of a Fowl in response to a post is not doing a disrespectful, bastardly turn. -
The way that turkey is looking at the camera makes me giggle every time I see it. Turkeys are right up there with ostriches when it comes to goofy looking birds.

the guy in bay ridge was recommended by my dentist (who I have been going to for 25 years). he had lots of credentials and super cool up to date technology. the accents and attitude were comforting...but please note, I was not picking any random guy with a license. The fact that he did not make me have multiple consultations (Dr, Baker wanted 1-2), looked at the xrays from my dentist, and charged average fees for his own x-rays saved me a few hundred automatically off the bat in comparison to the practice on Union St.
just to make sure that is understood
and note to self--watch every word and phrase carefully and be sure to edit and spell-check on this website, as its readers are apparently very meticulous!
