Why is it that there is only an option to rate a post positivley? That doesn't make any sense. There should be a negative rating also...

These are the options:

Your rating of this post
Highly recommended

Any thoughts?

  • Did you see how people freaked right the hell on out about the whole karma thing? I don't know if it's possible to configure the "rate this post" feature to allow negative ratings, but even if it were I suspect some people here would flip out about it.
  • i tend to agree with you, appollonia, but negative post ratings would at least seem less random, since it wold be clear what they applied to. with karma, a person could applaud or smite on the basis of something months old, which gave it an inscrutable quality.

also, i assume you can only rate a given post once, so one person can't take sway a given rating too far, unlike with karma.

that said, i predict drama on the board of a certain neighborhood, were this idea to come to fruition....
  • It just doesn't make any sense that one can post a positive and not a negative. It only seems fair, drama or not... People have to grow up and accept the fact that their opinions are not worldly accepted...

I think a lack of positive rating should suffice. I'm sure that when you disagree with somone's opinions you will not hesitate to let them know. I don't know why you need another outlet for negativity.

I guess you feel that I am here for negativity? check yourself and don't throw that sh*t around because you can anonymously...

I'm sure everyone loves you very much...happy for you!
  • I think Medusa is great and I did long before either of us arrived on this board!

She is right, the way to express negative feelings is to not rate the posts positively. Perhaps you could rate all the posts you don't object to positively, although that might take up a lot of your time.

Also, we are currently basically stuck with mods that are provided as-is, rather than designing our own. I don't that the post-rating system allows negative numbers, and it hardly seems like something we'd want to spend money to get implemented, when dailyheights is already worried about spam, event calendar, etc.

Edit: in the paragraph above, "mods" refers to the system add-ons that change the phpBB system, not moderators. I guess that could be confusing.

Maybe getting rid of the rating is a better idea? It really has no value without the option of negative... It might be better if people form their own opinions through reading the postings?
  • one point in favor of a positive-only system is that it does something more efficiently than simple reply posts would.

if i agree with a post, it would be annoying of me to post responses all the time to say "LOL :lol: " or "i agree" or "you're right on again, smart stuff". no one wants to read that. least of all people who think the board spends too much time patting itself on the back already.

if, on the other hand, i disagree with a post, it's probably more constructive of me to explain why i disagree with it -- i think that's what makes threads like the current one on calling the cops interesting. as someone reading that thread, i find it more satisfying to know why people disagree with each other than just to know that they do.

Conversely, why don't you ignore the features you don't like, instead of asking us to remove them and make them inaccessible to others who do like them? If you don't have time to read all the threads, clicking on the starred ones lets you know which ones readers perceive as interesting.

Thanks EmilyM, you always make it clear that you know best and screw anyone else that disagrees with you. You're a great site administrator. Are you a republican blogger :D

Gee, you so clearly need more ability to be negative here...

If you think that everyone should agree with your little club of happy hour bloggers then you guys are out of your mind. It was a SUGGESTION! These are in light a CONVERSATION!

When did disagreeing become NEGATIVE? Thats really sad on your part as administrators of the site...

The capital lettering in no way represents yelling.

Oh, so saying something like this:
djuoh wrote: Thanks EmilyM, you always make it clear that you know best and screw anyone else that disagrees with you. You're a great site administrator. Are you a republican blogger :D
...isn't at ALL negative. Nor is jumping down Medusa's throat for no apparent reason. Nor is this latest response from you. Sorry, my bad.
  • Am I the only one who thinks post rating is somewhat pointless?

Why have you been rating posts recently then? And why are you looking to expand the options on post rating?

Don't despair: if you keep reading and thinking, something may click.
  • Djuoh, you may not be aware of all of the controversy that swirled around the boards a couple of weeks ago regarding the Karma ratings. They permitted people to do the kind of thing you are suggesting, giving applause for people you agreed with or felt were adding to the discourse and smiting people that you felt were not adding to boards. There were a lot of posters that thought it was a way of assessing popularity and didn't help the discussion and ultimately it was scrapped.

Thank for doing research on me. I figured I would give it an shot and see what it was about. I thought it was a stupid thing that there was only one way to rate a post and that was positive.

What is the point of that? It's like kindergarden, and everyone gets a gold star...
  • It's not about rating people. It's about rating the quality of the post. We are experimenting with ways of assigning more value to specific posts, so you don't have to read through every single thing on the site. That's all.

We do this on a large scale by posting "best of" posts to DailySlope.com and DailyHeights.com. But what we think is "best" isn't what you think is best. We want to give you the ability to pick the best of the boards. Ideally, we would have a few pages you could go to and see the best posts of the day.

The post rating system is one step in that direction.

    Any questions?

If this is an experiment then why not have a negative rating also. I get the idea of the best, but i hope that people are not going to judge a good posting based on the rating of a few regular posters. have the best and the worst to make it all fair.

    Any questions?

why are you so eagar to be hatin' all over other people's posts?

Can we make a rating system to rate how racist everyone is (especially for the PH and CH boards)? Or how about a snitching star system? I know the perfect admin...

Yeah you are right Erikka, everyone should just get along and not have the option to disagree. I'd like to live in that fuzzy world also...

Oh and by the way...everyone is a racist, its reality.

That's not what I said at all-I'm asking why you're so hellbent on dissing other people's posts, and by extension, their opinions? Are you really going to take your time to go back and mark posts that you thought were boring or not up-to-snuff, or, GASP...you disagreed with? Do you think the poster cares that you disagree? If you scroll through the rest of the thread it seems that you're the only person who gives a shit. If you're that pissed off, well...you know where they live. Go piss on their doorstep or steal their newspaper. Something tells me that this *is* personal, otherwise you'd drop it and move on.
  • erikka wrote: Am I the only one who thinks post rating is somewhat pointless?
Why did you write this? Are related to John Kerry?

Wow! How did you know that I go around and piss on peoples door steps and want to waste my time giving negative feedback on postings?

Are you calling me a Nazi? Thanks Apollonia666! You're great, can't wait for the happy hour!
  • Godwin's Law (also Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is a mainstay of Internet culture, an adage formulated by Mike Godwin in 1990. It is particularly concerned with logical fallacies such as reductio ad Hitlerum, wherein an idea is unduly dismissed or rejected on ground of it being associated with persons generally considered "evil".

I didn't know about this until now, but thanks for the blatant insult and your administrative non-bias skills are coming through.

There is plenty that I would love to say back to you, but I will refrain from using any in-appropriate language because I don't want to hurt your feelings.
  • I mentioned Godwin's law not to insult you, but to point out how pointless and irrelevant the Kerry and "Republican blogger" cracks were. Beyond those two remarks, your responses to people in this thread have been disproportionately and bafflingly hostile.

Further, I'm not sure how my disagreeing with you (or, more accurately, objecting to the needless nastiness you've been displaying towards other users lately) is evidence of any "administrative" bias. The majority of the people who have disagreed with you in this thread are neither moderators nor, as far as I can tell, part of what you perceive as the "Blogger" (sic) "click" (sic).

Oh...you are SO not getting any stars for that one ;)

For what it's worth, I think the post rating system is silly, and getting one's panties in a bunch over it even sillier.
