Will pedestrians be able to cross 4th ave on Sunday?

You can try. But they will curse at you and you might cause an accident. I got trapped on the "wrong" side of 4th Avenue about eight years ago, when my little one was in a stroller. It wasn't during the prime time of the race - I'd thought it would only be stragglers at that point, but no, it was full-out runners. Out of sheer desperation we decided to wing it and fly across the avenue. Guess what? Those runners are faster than a mama, a baby, and a kindergartener. They were maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.... Fortunately we didn't cause an accident, but it was easy to see how we could have.
Worst comes to worst, you can use the subway tunnels to cross. But that'll cost you. There's no way to cross without going through the turnstiles. -
it'll be relatively easy to cross 4th avenue until the main pack starts trickling through the neighborhood about 45 min after the leaders. then it'll be virtually impossible.

Hey part of the fun of watching the runners and cheering them on is standing still! Like other events the marathon causes back ups and inconveniences sin the neighborhood but this event is really a lot of fun. So New York!

i am planning to cheer an everything, but i also need to get to CG at some point -- any guesses on when it does become possible to cross?

Excellent idea, thank you! -

If you can move relatively quickly you should be able to find a way across at any time, it may take a minute, but there is always some gapping. If like the poster above (and no offense intended) you cannot, eat the fare, and take the subway or just use it to cross at 9th st. Chances are they'll let you in for free if you tell them why. it sucks but it's just two hours of one day.
