cat boarding! — Brooklynian

cat boarding!

Since I am going to California next spring (moot if the writer's strike happens), I'm going to need a place to board my kitties. Since Penny has medical needs (needs fluids once a day and pills twice a day) I feel it is inappropriate to expect a neighbor or cat sitter to attend to his needs. I'm also afraid of using a kitty kennel. While my cats are very social animals and would probably enjoy it, I am not sure that a kennel would attend to Penny's medical needs properly. So ideally, it should be a vet.

I checked with MY vet, Animal Kind, about how much it would cost. They would charge me $98 a day for Penny and $58 a day for Tuly. HOLY CRAP IS THAT EXPENSIVE!!!! To be fair, Animal Kind normally doesn't board animals, and my cats only qualify to be boarded because of Penny's medical needs.

However, I'm used to paying much less for boarding. My old vet charged $30 a day for the two of them. My dad thinks that maybe I should use the old vet, but the old vet is an HOUR away by cab and Penny just doesn't travel well anymore. Last time I took him on an hour-long car ride, it took a week for him to recover.

Is there a place where I can board my animals in Brooklyn that isn't going to charge me a huge chunk of the money I'd be making shooting this film?

  • Animal Kind has vet techs who will do house calls when you have to be away. One of my cats was insulin-dependent for about a year and a half (for the moment his diabetes is controlled by diet alone) and that's what I did. I have three cats and unless something changed they charged by the cat, $15 per cat per day, so I paid $45 per day. But that got me two visits and the shots. If you want I can PM you the name of the specific vet tech I used.

Alternatively Petato, who I started using when my sweet-blooded kitty went off the insulin, also will administer shots and pills. You can look at rates here (scroll down past the dog charges) - in your case it seems like you might be better off with the vet tech.

  • Wow. I didn't know that. They'd travel all the way to Crown Heights for that? Penny needs pills twice a day though and my cats usually have to eat separately because of their differing food needs.

Though to make it simpler for the vet tech, Tuly can just be fed Penny's food while I'm gone. She can live on a lower-protein diet for a week.

I wonder why Animal Kind didn't tell me about this option.

Do I just give them a copy of my keys?
  • Hello,
I just moved myself, my kitties, and my cat hotel business to Park Slope approx 3 weeks ago (after having been in Astoria/LIC for many years). I know it's not okay to advertise on the boards, so I will just invite those of you looking for kitty boarding to PM me and I can give you all the details, website, etc.
Thank you, and glad to see you all, this is a great board!

Dunno, I'm in Prospect Heights (Eastern near Washington) and they came to me.

It's not officially an Animal Kind service; it's sort of a side gig for the vet techs. I paid the dude in cash. They are probably not bonded/insured and all that good stuff, either. But at the time, my greatest concern was finding someone who I knew could properly administer the injections, and the guy was totally fine. I used him several times.

    Yep.
  • Newbie, as I understand the rules, it is perfectly ok to talk about your business so long as you make it clear that you are connected to said business. (No fake boosterism, in other words.) You're also allowed to advertise in the Classified section.

So my question is, would I be able to depend on a cat hotel to administer Penny's fluids and pills? Socially, the setting would be ideal because my cats are very social animals, but I worry about Penny's medical needs being met.

Thank you so much lilbangladesh, I was not aware of that. Also, I had not even realized there was a Classified section. (I found it once you mentioned it.) I will mosey on over there later. :)

I don't know about any other cat hotel (are there other cat hotels?) but you certainly can depend on MY cat hotel, absolutely! I have yeeeeears of experience with sub-q fluids, etc, but I won't go into all the details here. I will go over to the Classifieds, and if you want, feel free to PM me. The site is www.thecatspajamashotel.com if that is allowed here. I've been running the business for 9+ years now, but I've had my own kitties (or rather they have had me, of course) since I was about 7 years old... and that was... um.... a very long time ago.

  • PS: You probably already know this, but I do teach people the very easy way to pill a cat. Yup, I said it, pill and easy, in the same sentence.
  • I know that too. I learned to pill a cat at my daddy's knee. Penny's used to being pilled (five years now!) so he shouldn't be difficult if you know what you're doing. I use what I call the advanced method (stick him on my lap, hold his head back and stick the pill in) because I'm too lazy to get on my knees and straddle him, which is what I do with cats that don't have Penny's experience with pills.

I suppose once the writer's strike is over and I know that the project is a go, I should give your facility a visit, no?

Absolutely. And good luck with your project. I really hope the writers get what they ask, and soon. (For selfish reasons too: I want NEW episodes of Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert!!!)
  • Weird. My name came up wrong ([email protected]???) and that is not even my email address. Anyone know how to contact the powers that be on this board?

I'm one of the site admins, and I have NO idea how that happened. You were logged in and everything, right?
