Last night I heard gunshots near kingston and dean st. Anyone knows what happened?

I don't, but a neighbor of mine heard some too from Prospect Place. He said it looked like gunfire happening on a rooftop on St. Marks. Sadly, when he called the precinct the next day, they said they had no idea. I can't imagine not calling in gunshots, but apparently people don't. I live on St. Marks and we've had bigtime police presence here in the last week, including the huge lights. They weren't here as of Monday night, but they were when the gun shots happened. Apparently lights and police presence aren't quite cutting the mustard.

Most people I know, including myself don't "call in" hearing gunshots. Gun fights, maybe. I would say that most feel, what is the use. Unless there is a body, the police aren't going to show up.

Seeing someone shooting, thats another story. That means my "personal" space is being violated, and 'homey dont play dat'.

I did hear some interesting shots the other day. Fits into your friends story of a rooftop on St. Marks. Sounded like a someone was target testing a large caliber high up.

Those towers and lights are the funniest/stupidest thing ever.

Yeah don't call the Police when you hear gunshots, only call when you see a shootout. As long as your personal space is not violated.Also I think people should be allowed to use rooftops for target practice.Oh BTW the 82 year old woman who was shot on Underhill from recreational gunfire is doing just fine, she just purchased a Bullet Resistant Shawl.

I desparately hope that KWOC entire posting was tongue in cheek. If not, someone needs a major reality check.

Um, I know he can be pretty caustic, believe me, but I think "Bullet Resistant Shawl" is a pretty solid indicator that this is indeed tongue-in-cheek.

Do you know if they ever caught the guys who did this? Police woke me up at 5 in the morning to look for perps from my roof; I'm curious to know the aftermath.

Why was someone on Park Place being bounced out of bed for gunshots fired on St. Marks? Pretty big distance, right?
How do you know the two incidents were the same, or that there were two? Just curious.
As for not calling in gunshots based on the type of gun activity, I don't get it. Last I heard, the only people who were licensed to carry weapons in the city were cops and maybe the occassional hunter driving through. Why pretend that people firing guns on your rooftop is normal? Not to mention okay by you? How long before a simple round testing firing turns into a gun fight? Not long, I'd venture, not long.

St. Marks and Park Place are not that far apart. Check a map.

There are many many people who are licensed to carry pistols in NYC as well as have rifles/shotguns in their homes. I'm not saying that this boob has a permit but there are alot more armed citizens than you realize. A legal gun being used illegaly is an extremely rare event.

Yup -- only two blocks (the short blocks, not the longer avenue-type blocks) apart. If there aren't too many tall buildings to bounce back the sound between where the shots were fired and where someone heard them it's not at all inconceivable.

The cops told me an 80 something year old woman had been shot when they woke me up. I'm guessing this didn't happen twice.

If gather you are responding to my statements relating to when guns are heard. The way my house is situated, my bed room is almost in the middle of the block in a 'valley', about 150' from the street. Due to the acoustics I can literally hear loud noises em inating from blocks away. If I called the police, where am I going to tell them they are coming from?
When I described the shots in question, I knew the general direction, and was only describing what I heard. I never implied in any way I was 'cool' with it.

Actually, I was responding to KWAC and to the poster who was woken up at 5 am so the police could check his rooftop. I was looking for clarification. My neighbor heard shots and saw flashes on a rooftop on St. Marks at 1 a.m. It sounds like the woman was shot on Park Place. That's why I was asking.
As for acoustics and gunfire, I am situated in a similar kind of way, but I can usually tell from which direction the sounds I hear are emanating. I figure calling in, even if I'm not sure which direction the shots are coming from, is better than no call at all. It will at least get a car in the general area, and that might prevent further activity or actually result in someone being spotted leaving a crime scene.
