disturbed man? at 286 eastern parkway — Brooklynian

disturbed man? at 286 eastern parkway

Off and on for a month and a half a man has been throwing beer bottles, the contents of his fridge (mayo!), and most recently bottles with flaming rags stuffed in them at my house. I wanted to get my roomates together and go over and try to talk to him (we have no idea who he is or why he's mad at us) but they've called the cops and just want him in jail.

He lives in the back of the apartment complex at 286 eastern parkway and we live in a house on Union street (he throws things from his window across the air shaft/alleyway and at our house). He's on the third floor. Does anyone here live in that building and have you had any contact with this guy? I'd rather find out if he's mentally / emotionally disturbed and contact his case worker or therapist if he has one - and if that's possible - rather than send him to jail where he won't get any help. The cops have knocked on his door but he won't open up.

I'm sorry to post an address on this forum - it feels wrong, like an invasion of privacy. I think I was non-specific enough. Let me know if I wasn't and I'll delete the post or remove the address.

Thanks!

  • Something tells me this guy doesn't have a therapist.
  • I'm all for letting the NYPD handle things when a guy is THROWING MOLOTOV COCKTAILS AT YOUR HOME. Seriously?!

You might try to find out who owns the building (sites like PropertyShark.com might help) and complain to the landlord. But I wouldn't try to have a conversation with someone who seems likely to be violent.
  • Subject: no gasoline

the bottles had some weird semi-flammable substance in them, not gasoline...I think the guy is just crazy and needs help, and jail isn't the answer. If he knew what he was doing we'd be dead already. I seem to be lucky with violently crazy people, nobody's hurt me yet :) besides, I'm not the biggest fan of getting cops involved in situations, in my experience violence usually escalates.
  • Naw, I'd take A666's advice. This is no time to be a hippie.
The cops can find him mental help too.

oops, looked it up on property shark (thanks for the tip!) and it's 286 eastern parkway.

mod note::: i fixed the address on the original post for you from 284 to 286. peace, vanilla.
  • I'm a mental health professional and the cops are the way to go here. If he is up to something dangerous (maybe more to himself than to you) they will take him to the nearest psych ER (likely Kings County.) The police have a term for a fellow like this EDP -- Emotionally Disturbed Person. They will take him to the ER to be evaluated if they think he is an EDP. He probably just stopped taking his meds.

that makes me feel better. as long as he's not just going to be dumped in a jail!

I'm not a fan of involving the police, but um, wouldn't you rather call the police now, than the fire department later? This man is throwing cocktails at you house and you want to play nice and go talk to him? I strongly advise against that.
Maybe he has a good idea of what he is doing and just not getting it right. If the substance was jelly like, let's hope he doesn't get the mix right, as "we'd be dead" when he does.

Maybe he doesn't like something you represent. What makes you think he is "just crazy"? (although disliking someone to such an extent for who they are or represent is crazy)

Try and video him in action if you can. Gather witnesses and evidence (try and collect items in paper bags without touching them) and head to the precinct a.s.a.p. You should not be putting yourself in danger based on your kindhearted determination that he may need help. It makes for a nice eulogy. Let the proper authorities make that decision.
    Live long and prosper.
