GOOD RIDDANCE GOLDEN KRUST!!
for many, many YEARS..i've supported the golden krust franchise...faithfully scarfing down their shrimp & veggie patties with coco bread..even when they've served me up lukewarm, burnt patties with a side of stink, rude & lackadaisical service. but as of today i'm happy to say:
NO MORE!!!! NO MORE!!!!
tastee patties on the corner of marcy & fulton has the most DELICIOUS veggie & fish patties that i have ever tasted!!! AND the coco bread is fluffy and delectable!! AND THEY HAVE MANNERS!!!
BIG-UPS TASTEE PATTIE!!! GOOD RIDDANCE GOLDEN KRUST!!!

damn. got excited when i saw your subject and thought maybe the one on fulton between washington and st james had closed. that place is always there, beckoning me with its stomach-ache patties.
will have to try the one on marcy and fulton. -
I love Tastee Pattee! Excellent vegetable patties--large, flaky crust, slightly spicy filling, wow! And their rugalagh isn't bad too! And the people working there are nice. But they ran out of roti wraps by noon on Saturday (it's only recently that they had roti at all). It was okay because I wanted to order a vegetarian roti, and theirs would have consisted of cabbage and ... cabbage.
Where is good roti? Last time I went to Ali's (on Fulton near Nostrand) the workers were downright nasty, and they charged $4 for about two ounces of pumpkin on the side! Melanie's (also on Fulton near Nostrand) had very rude workers too, and they wouldn't make a vegetarian roti--we had to choose only one vegetable (or pay extra for a second filling).
The place that used to be where Melanie's is now (I think) was so great--a vegetarian roti meant all the vegetables (pumpkin, potato, chick peas, greens, etc.), plus delicious and flavorful hot sauces! Now when I ask for hot sauce anywhere, the people look at me like they never heard of hot sauce.
There's a place on Fulton and Tompkins where the people are nice, but they keep changing their menu, hours, prices, etc. I have no idea what their hours are. For a while they offered delivery, but no more. They used to have special roti wraps (whole wheat, etc.), but now the workers get confused when I ask about that. They started putting their wraps in the microwave, which isn't great (makes them hard around the edges). Sometimes they run out of roti (either wraps or vegetable fillings), but last weekend when Tastee Pattee didn't have the wraps they made me a fine vegetarian roti and they were really nice about it. By all accounts the jerk chicken was good too (they only had it with bones, though).
Anyone know of more good, fairly priced, reliable roti places near Fulton and Brooklyn? --E. -

getting good service & good west indian food in BK is usually only possible if you have a west indian grandma...heh heh heh
but i digress...for dope roti..hit up any gloria's restaurant along nostrand ave..if my memory serves me correct the closest one to you is on the corner of nostrand & sterling...if they're too crowded you can walk up nostrand to st. johns and hit up the golden palace..but gloria's is worth the wait.
for future reference..Trinidadian spots make the best roti. -
Take the 2 train to Church Ave and check out Food For You at Church Ave off 35th, a Trini spot that makes awesome roti. The "Bust Up Shot" roti is also delicious there.
-
Brooks Valley on Tompkins and Hancock is good. I agree...Glorias is good but Golden Palace has boneless Chicken Roti that is to die for.Rickys on Fulton and Albany is good also and Sallys on Fulton and Tompkins.

You can get both the chicken and the goat either with bones or boneless at Food For You.
-
I like the Roti at Ginger Root - Washington btwn St Marks and Prospect. The chicken (boneless) with pumpkin and chana is excellent. Only problem is they often don't have the roti ready until later in the day so it's not reliable for lunch.

Nio's on Church and Rogers (I think it's Rogers) thier roti is worth the trek.
-
stop hatin on golden crust! you can get a good chicken curry patty there! (at least at some of them anyway).

there's one on Ralph near seaview. No burnt paties there. As far as I know, they are franchises, so dont hate them all. Maybe the owner/Operator is the problem, not the franchise? -
I went to Tastee Pattee this morning. The man in front of me got a beef patty and the woman working there charged him $1.25. I ordered a vegetable patty and handed over my $1.25, but the woman said it's $1.50. I said, the vegetable is more expensive than the beef? She said yes. Anyone know why this would be? --E.

Maybe they get better beef pricing than veggies? Or, maybe they outsource the veggie patties? Two wild guesses for you

thats pretty standard...beef patties are the norm and less expensive..chicken..veggies are more of a "speciality"... -
i bet you that veggie pattie was BANGING tho!!
i just stopped in there the other day and they had some veggie joints right out the oven...mmmmmmmm...=))
POSSIBLE STEREOTYPE BELOW (but i don't really think so)
west indians are usually more into fish/veggies (ital is vital), chicken and goat than beef...
..beef is wack -
chat bout?? Most Caribbeaners love their beef.

Ital is rasta business not the general populace
