  • Revitalize = Gentrify?
  • Well, the retail picture is not quite as bleak as the article paints it. The quality of food and produce is pretty good because of the multiple vegetable stands and natural food stores. And there are plenty of supermarkets. The grocery situation here is a hell of a lot better than in Harlem. Still, there are a few items that I can't find here necessitating what I've taken to call "the yuppie run", having to go out of the neighborhood to find a few things I need.

I mean, it is kind of bad when I can find a lemon juicer in this neighborhood, an item that should have cost $2 at the dollar store. (Is it just me that I don't think a lemon juicer is that exotic an item?)

Sit-down restaurants are opening. Apparently, a coffee shop has opened, though I have yet to get my ass to it. A gym would be nice, though apparently there is one on St. John's Place. Anyone know about this? A bank branch that doesn't charge !$3! dollars for withdrawals would be nice too.

For the most part, I'm pretty happy with the retail here, so I hope they get more profitable so they can widen their selections. And I'll be happy once all that bullet-proof glass disappears from the vegetarian restaurants. The food is good and the people are sweet, but that stuff is depressing!
  • Yeah I agree. I would love to walk in a wine store where I can touch the bottles and read the labels. Eventually I supposed.

Good to see the NY Sun perpetuating the lying-realtor created myth as to the borders of Crown Heights/Prospect Heights.
  • I thought those WERE the borders of North Crown Heights? I thought that realtors were lying to the people who lived east of Franklin and telling them that they lived in Prospect Heights.

Anyhoo, I took out my new blender that I bought locally. It's a very nice blender. Unfortunately, the lid does not fit. I spent an hour on the phone talking to some rude, incompetent woman from customer service who basically told me to go out and get a new blender without even bothering to offer me a refund. The store has only *3* blender options, but apparently, I have the money to throw around getting new blenders from the ether, I suppose.

So yeah, retail does leave something to be desired. If something you buy doesn't work, you're SOL because the stores only stock 1-3 brands. More options would be nice.

That and not having to pay $3 a page to fax anything from the car service. Anywhere else in the city, it costs $1. Here, $3. :(
  • Must you whine about everything?
What happened to the "reasons we heart Crown Height"

I am under the impression that the western border of Crown Heights is Washington Ave. There are a ton of posts on this board stating this. For example:

Wikipedia also agrees. My broker, on the other hand believes that PH extends at least as far east as Franklin because he claims that our apt (between Classon and Franklin) is in PH.
I guess it's possible that "North Crown Heights" refers only to the eastern-most part of the northern part of Crown Heights. That would make the article correct. But it would still be a dirty broker lie to tell people east of Washington that they lived in PH.

Check out www.myfax.com. If you send more than 3 pages/month at that ridiculous cost, you can save money by having an account online. Then you just send documents from your computer to myfax and myfax faxes them for you. So you also avoid walking to the car service to send a fax. In addition, you get your own fax number. People send faxes to that number and pdfs of the faxes end up in your email.

The problem as I see it is that people want to live in Prospect Heights, not Crown Heights. Because of course, everybody knows Crown Heights is a "bad" neighberhood. So by walking across Washington Avenue, one enters a "bad" n'hood, thus suggesting his/her life is in immediate danger, he/she will shortly be accosting by roaming bands of thugs, ripped to shreds by malevolent mobs, etc. etc.
As someone who lives at Nostrand and Park Pl, I'm surprised I ever leave my house.
Or is this fear of Crown Heights just "yuppie hype"?
  • Subject: three types of personalities

The most important statement in the debate on Brownstoner in response to the Sun article was the following:

In Crown Heights you have to understand that you live amongst three types of personalities. 1.People who make things happen, 2. People who watch things happen, and 3. People who wake-up and wonder "What the fuck happened".

I have been following the debates in this forum for over a year. First, I realized that some people are so obsessed with crime that they are incapable to come up with any positive and forward looking vision for our hood. And what about this endless debates about the exact borders of CH?Then there is this group that permanently talks about "let's start a business", let's contribute to the development in CH without taking any action. Oh, yeah and let's not forget the people that are so scared about change that they have to throw in the race card into any kind of discussion.

I guess if the mentality in this forum won't be changed soon, you should simply shut it down.
  • My problem is that I have to fax timesheets. Since I no longer have a scanner, I don't think I can fax anything from my computer anymore. :(

LastTry, if this forum shuts down, where will all those people who whine about crime go? :)

Personally, I find the scary reputation of Crown Heights a tad overblown. Yes, you need to use caution and common sense, but you need to use them everywhere. When I was rehearsing in Hicksville, LI, I was more nervous walking from the train station to where I was rehearsing as that neighborhood wasn't the best.

But then I live here and have come to know my immediate area and my neighbors, so I feel pretty safe.
