overheard muggers talking on Franklin
Hi all, so I was walking on Franklin by Sterling yesterday around 8 and I overheard a couple of teens talking about how one of them makes money robbing people.
I started to get a look at them but they already knew I'd overheard and were walking away quick. The one doing the talking was maybe 6', medium build, medium-dark brown skin (not black-black but not light either), wearing a dark jacket and almost definitely younger than 20. The other one was noticeably short (in the 5' 5" range) and with a chubby face but not extremely fat, obviously high school age and not younger. He had light brown skin. The little one would have trouble mugging someone older than 12.
Anyway, I didn't get a great look to get a good description, but I thought I'd give up the info.
Also, at maybe 4:30 yesterday there was a big bust on Franklin and Eastern, I think those guys who're always selling weed in that part of Franklin.

I posted it to the PH board because I live on the side of Franklin that might be PH and lots of people I know walk up Franklin to get to the train.

In case this second post from Santa is confusing...
I had posted a reply saying that Franklin is in Crown Heights so I was going to move this to the Crown Heights board. Then I wasn't able to move the thread because of a glitch between phpBB and my work firewall, so I deleted my post. So sonofsanta responded to what I had said that's now gone.
Anyway. I will probably still move this to the CH board when I get home from work and no longer have to deal with the firewall, because Franklin is in that neighborhood. The thread title will still show up on the front page of the PH section -- it'll just say "Moved" with a link to the thread's new home in the CH section. That way people from both boards will be able to see it. Fair enough?

we gotta get the cross-posting back

You overheard muggers talking? I mean do you really know that they are muggers or that they were just talking st!t. Seems like you're a bit paranoid, especially since you felt the need to alert everyone. From what you say they are kids. Kids talk a lot of sh!t (and people in general). Especially in the hood. And I'm pretty sure the look of Franklin Ave. plus, the "suspicious act" of walking quickly, and their "not black-black but not light" skin combined to give you an unflattering opinion. Talking about something and doing something are two different things. I talked a lot of sh!t when I was younger, but I have never actually committed a crime. Try not to assume the worst.
-
Well its either one of 2 things..........They are trying to scare the poster or they are infact committing Robberies. There have been several Robberies right off of Franklin ave in the last 2 weeks. So there could be some truth to this.

It's funny. I have lived out here since 97'. You are dumb if you say there are "kids" being "kids" at this point.

You have lived here since '97, how interesting. I have lived here my whole life, so save it. I grew up here. In fact I was born in that former hospital that some of you live in. I went to school here. I know how it is. I know the pulse of the people. I talk to the people. I actually know the people who are FROM HERE. And yes it may have been kids just being kids. So quick to assume the worst still huh? Understand who your talking to and what your talking about before you start trying to insult people. Your looking from the outside in, and unless you were born here, you always will be. Ok buddy? -
In my experience, most criminals are pretty dumb, but I would *think* they would have the brains not to talk about their criminal activity in public.
I'm inclined to agree with the previous poster. Kids talk shit to make themselves look tough. And some of the worst "talkers" I knew growing up never actually did commit a crime. Talking about hypothetical crimes is not actually a crime, and the kid probably realized he screwed up when he saw you looking at him. -
The majority of the people arrested in the most recent rash of Robberies have been kids. A 12 and 13 yr old and a group of Kids surrounded another kid in the McDonalds parking lot and stole his IPOD. They both were arrested.
-
So,I grew up in a bad neighborhood in BK and I agree about kids and sh!t talking. I did the same thing when I was in high school and I thought about that before posting. I'm pretty sure this kid wasn't just talking. He was trying to convince the little one to do it and the little one wasn't liking the idea. They weren't trying to scare and they didn't see me until I was right on them, when they looked surprised and started walking right away. I'm a big guy and kids don't usually mess with me, even when they're looking for trouble. So take the info for whatever it's worth and ignore it if you don't believe me.
I posted this to the PH board because there are 5 threads about being mugged in the last month and I thought people there would be interested. It's on the CH board because an admin moved it. -
ok. we've been warned. :?

Wow, talking $shit or not, I know I'd personally want to tell people if I overhead that.
I'd don't think that's paranoid at all.
It's not like the OP was walking around trying to find potential muggers to report, some dumba$$es were just chatting away.
Obviously it's not something they should be arrested for, but sersiously, if they're glorifying mugging (if it is talking out of their a$$es) then someone should smack the $hit out of them before they actually do mug someone. -

For what it's worth, I got the impression from your original post that you knew what you were talking about enough to vibe the difference between kids talking shit and something more serious. So I'm glad you put it out there.

getonmylevel718, could you please not make this about how new, not new, medium new etc someone is?
As it turns out, the OP shares your BK provenance. -
I all fairness, it's true that lots of people become paranoid when they're in a bad neighborhood and begin to imagine threats that aren't there. And lots of times that makes them overlook the real threats too.
So I do think that it's a good to ask whether someone who gives out this kind of info is credible. -

Of course kids say and do some dumb shit, there is absolutely no argument there. But there is a different degree of dumb shit that can be said, correct? If someone heard that people were scheming to taks someone's things, than it is a tough argument to make that it is an overreation on the OP's part. I think if the OP said he/she heard "kids" talking about fucking some girl, or smoking a joint and then told us to watch out, that would be an overaction.
Just recently, I was in Hamden, Baltimore. Baltimore, a far rougher city than NYC for the past decade and there were white punks talking about jacking people. Same fucking reaction. They aren't kids being kids. My friend who lives out there, who grew up in Brooklyn, would never fuck with them. He has seen them take people's shit and run the neighborhood. In their case, they were saying dumb shit and quite often act on it, too.
And, you know nothing about me, my man. Or what kind of shit I have seen or lived through. You can live in many places and still have an inside look at what you say is so foreign to me. That is presumptuous at best, eh? Furthermore, the point of my comment was that after years of living in this very neighborhood with many great experiences, interactions and friends, I just haven't heard cornerboys being so brazen in their intentions. -

One other thing (well, two things) that I'd like to point out - adults are great lie detectors, it's built in to us. Adolescents... well, they're not very accomplished when it comes to the art of deception, in fact, they're pretty shit at it. When it comes to a sane adult being able to feel out a lie from a yoot... yeah, I'll take the adult at 10-to-1 against any time. -

LOL. Your funny man. What are you going to do about it? Tell them to stop it? While your at it remind them to do their homework and to brush their teeth. I mean what do you really expect. This was the mentality before you got here and it will be when you leave. Stop being scared and learn how to deal. I laugh when i see all of these "warnings". As if posting an alert on here is going to do something. And maybe I'm wrong maybe they are going to jack someone, but I could care less. No one in this neighborhood is going to jack me, and honestly thats all I really care about. You want points for living in B-more or something? Do you think I care? Do you think living in a rough city something to me cause I am actually from here? And I'm just going to go out on a limb and assume your not actually from any rough parts of anywhere. And on top of that some of you think this neighborhood is kinda bad/tough. And that is the funniest thing of all. Try being from Brownsville, try East New York (being from there, not just living there). I didn't want to make it about this, but dude face it, you are an outsider no matter how much you don't want to believe so. This is actually my home. So there is no way in hell, you can have the understanding that I have. Just not possible. Does that compute? And you have never heard the corner boys being so brazen before? Where the hell have you been, because they are. I know for a fact. That comment right there shows me that you don't know what your talking about. Eventhough I would stop short of calling this a bad neighborhood, sh!t happens. Get used to it. And on the note I'm done with this stupid post and going back and forth with someone who is obviously a punk. So don't look for a response. -
Jesus, did you have a role in Indiana Jones or some shit, Haha, Funny. Haha, funny, Dr. Jones.
Go study for your GMATs, Mr. Pulse on the 'hood! -
It amazes me how angry people (myself included at times) get on message boards. There should be a study done.

WTF IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?!?! :x  :x  -
getonmylevel : dont EVER assume that you will never get jacked. If you truly are from CH, then you should know that. You might not get jacked by the people you see everyday, but they dont have a monopoly on taking shit in CH.

Ummm. I'm a little afraid to reply here? Not really, but I would like to point out that postings about crimes that are happening frequently are helpful. I've noticed that there are many more postings on the PH board regarding muggings, and they often provide very specific details. While I live in CH, I work in PH, and now know to look out for a kid in a striped jacket or a black satin one or even to look out for a specific number of kids grouped together, and this is helpful. As is information about tactics, like two kids (or three) on one side of the street while another follows them up on the opposite side. This doesn't mean that I think every single kid joking around is a potential mugger. It simply makes me aware of who is doing what at the moment. Additionally, I find it interesting that while we in Crown Heights discuss hearing gunshots, over there it's more person on person crime, i.e. muggings.
Sonofsanta has already divulged his street pedigree, but even without it, that is helpful information. Furthermore, do you think that kids discuss mugging tactics when they know they're being heard? Clearly Sonof surprised them. Also, as a woman who has lived in rough neighbrohoods her entire life, I know when someone is just trying to scare and/or bait me. I imagine most people can suss that out. But then that's my own sensibility. Maybe not everyone can, and maybe having a clear description of the nature of street crimes being committed in their area is useful. Without being accusatory. I don't think sonofsanta was at all accusatory, and what I see in response seems to presuppose that he was. -
Honesty has no say here. Fuckin; E. NY Rep, yo! Brownsvillr, where you at? Babies born in the Jewish hoho? Where you be? Bitch!

Sorry to do this, mods, but getonmylevel, get real.
Kids should have someone to tell them to do homework and brush their teeth. Being made to do so hardly constitutes a fairytale life. It speaks of a parented life. Every child is entitled to one.
You express your confidence in not getting jacked in such a community-minded way! See, that's sarcasm. What are you saying? Let crime rule as long as it doesn't affect me?
Why do you think anyone is "looking for points" for living where they live?
People choose to live where they live for a variety of reasons. In this city, affordability is foremost among them. But there's also aesthetic sensibility, train access, neighborliness and all the rest to take into account. I don't think anyone takes lightly where they choose to live. And I don't think they should be made to be feel like an imposter for choosing to rent in Crown Heights. Tell the landlords to keep the fair haired out if you're so concerned.
Because the truth is, that most of the residents you take umbrage with, as you assume they are white, are not owners.
Howdy, Stranger!
