ALERT: bike thieves
fyi, last night somebody stole the bike wheel of my bike (which i have been leaving locked in my stoop for the last few months). When i went to the bike shop on Washington to get a new wheel (and another lock!), the guy said that i was the third person this morning to come for the same sh!t. I know that bikes get stolen all the time, but i thought i would give you bikers a heads up that there seems to be a bike stealing spree happening here. I don't know where the other bikes where stolen from, but the moderator might want to cross-post it with the Prospect Heights blog. I live on Park Place and Franklin.

where is the bike shop on washington? did you mean bicycle station on vanderbilt??
your bike might have been targeted b/c it was left out on your stoop for a few months! plus, all bikes left over night outside are at risk of getting f-d with. you must have just been lucky for the first few months!

Correction, there has been a SAFETY SPREE over the last few years. Nowadays it amazes me how many people near where I live leave their bikes chained outside every single night.
The way I grew up here, if you left your bike outside for long enough (which really wasn't very long) it would get stolen, simple as that. Either that, or it would get vandalized, spokes stomped in, etc, by kids. Never did people simply leave their bikes outside at night like it was the thing to do - that is strictly a new phenomenon.

sorry, you are right, it's the bike shop on Vanderbilt, not Washington.
I know it's my "fault" for leaving it outside, but if it's more convenient, if i leave it inside i would never use it because it's a pain in the neck to bring it out...hopefully with the 2 locks it will be safe [gasp] -
someone left a bike chain infront of my fence. one of the locks has already been pick. the other one still on there. somebody should claim it soon lol. i hope its not one of my tenants. cause i do have a place for them to chain their bikes in the basement. there are alot of bikes there.
also i should stop being lazy and put up bike mounts in the basement already. for which i already brought hehe. -
Maybe someone can find that You Tube flick of the guy stealing the wheel off the bike along with the Hit theme song.
-
Did they get your seat too? Thursday night somebody told me that they had the wheel and seat stolen from in front of a friends building on Sterling and Washington.

seeing that you've posted the address of your building on DH, you might not want to mention bikes in the basement, etc. people like to break into basements.

dont be too paranoid hehe. i doubt bike thieves would trouble themsleves by breaking into a building and reading this forum and tracking down post.
plus i got cameras up and people do their laundry all the time in the basement. -

'Round here is no different that the city when it comes to bikes. You don't lock it up properly (lock both wheels and frame to a looped object) and remove removable items ( ie seat), your probably gonna get jacked.

Over the summer I constantly had to remind my new caucasian neighbors to this fact, as well as locking thier bike up INSIDE thier gate, not on the outside , asking to be trucked with -

You said it all right there. Good post. If people must leave their bikes outside, then they should follow your instructions. And then they should still pray because serious bike thiefs will pick/break even the best locks/chains. Still, at a minimum, they should take your advice. -
One of the most ironic things I've seen is one of the tenants that lives in the large mansion on Brooklyn Avenue, chaining his bike to the pole on the curb instead of wheeling his bike inside the large driveway and backyard of his building and chaining it out of the way where someone can't see it and mess with it. Its also pretty funny that its got two shiny expensive locks on a bike that looks like its worth about $20 bucks at salvage.

It's probably *why* it hasn't been stolen so far!
Why would anyone bother to go through two locks just to steal a piece of junk?
I had a piece of junk bike and I never left my bike outside, even when I was living in more "upscale" neighborhoods. It just seemed to be a stupid thing to do. Of course, I don't have a bike anymore because I just got too scared to ride a bike in the city. I know too many bikers who got killed. Drivers in NYC have little respect for bicyclists. Scary.

Why would you point out that your neigbors are caucasian? I guess you are implying that they aren't as bright as other residents of the community. Why is Race constantly being made an issue on almost every other thread on this board? -

yes,
thanks restless native for pointing out there's been a "safety spree'
i agree
i grew up riding a bike in this city and have never left it without making sure both wheels are locked
lately tho, for some reason,
in both brooklyn & manhattan
i've been locking just the front wheel...
i needed that wake up call!
@ kenieva: what a pain

ayo someone stole my front bike wheel on the butler & 4th avenue..so this stuff is happening all over..
all the advice given so far has been good..invest in a good lock, lock your bike in a well lit area, try not to lock it up overnight if possible, and my favorite..give cats menacing looks as you lock up your bike. -
Why cats? There's been a rash of feline bike thieves?
You know, if I ever let Tuly out, I wouldn't put it past her. She's EEEEVIL!!! -
I've been biking for 30 years in Brooklyn and had bikes stolen everywhere, including out of my house when a contractor left the front door open to get some fresh air! My last bike with stolen on Pineapple Street in Brooklyn Heights. Some thief popped the U lock like it was made out of straw.
Now I've been forced to invest in one of the hardeded steel chains, like everybody else. Hate it!
Some tricks I've learned to avoid the hassle of carrying two locks: use small pieces of bike chain to secure your rear wheel and seat. It's easy to do, all you need is a chain cutter and some chain off an old bike. I've never had a rear wheel or seat stolen using this method. (Knock on wood!) -

This is disheartening as I plan on purchasing an Aerospoke front wheel in the near future
