  • This is the sort of troubleshooting that could take a lot of additional information to figure out, and (quite frankly) something that would probably be really tedious online/messaging/etc. Personally, I would start by calling linksys support...
  • Subject: computer help

tx for the suggestion- will do same at the earliest
    mucho gracias :)
  • One thing you could do: push the button on the back of the router to reset it. Then open the manual and follow the instructions to reprogram it. e.g. use the Dell, connected directly via ethernet, to access the router on 192.168.1.1 to change the wireless settings, and match those on the Sony's wireless setup.
  • I have a Belkin Wireless G router with a Mac. And Belkin customer support SUCKS. They had me do all this voodoo with the reset button (I tell you, what good does it do to push the reset button when the power is OFF?) and it never occurred to them that I could put the right IP address MANUALLY. It took three tries and three hours to get someone who was half competent on the phone where we finally discovered that the damn thing is defective.

And another gripe: If you have a strong Indian accent, your name ain't Jerry, Chris or Fred. You're Rajiv. Own it. Love it. And if you have a strong accent, for God's sake DON'T talk fast! (And try to give directions in consecutive order! Not "Hit the reset button, but turn off power first.") Talking fast in an accent I don't hear well is guaranteed to make me cranky.

I'm cranky anyway, because I lost a lot of sleep over this. And annoyed. I HATE it when I know more than the support guys. I call support because I'm clueless to begin with!
  • Yeah, I got the WRT54G - it can be cranky. Usually the reset/reprogram will set things to rights, but I try to upgrade the firmware now and then. I don't know if that's the reason, but it has given less and less trouble over a ~2 year period.
  • It's a bad sign when you call up customer support and the voice says, "If you're calling about model number F5SXXXXXX, press 2" and it's YOUR model number. Clearly they've had a lot of problems with this thing that they've had to dedicate an entire line to this.
