Bagel Hole on 7th - Get Your Act Together!! — Brooklynian

Bagel Hole on 7th - Get Your Act Together!!

gerald
edited November -1 in Park Slope
Every time I've gone into Bagel Hole on 7th for the last couple of months, they've told me that their "toaster is broken" and they can't give me any kind of toasted bagel.

I ask - what kind of Bagel establishment operates for months without a working toaster?! Get the stupid thing fixed! This is clearly a place that glides by on the reputation garnered from the laminated NY Post article from a million years ago that they have taped to their wall, declaring them the best bagels in Park Slope. But I can't possibly be the only one in the neighborhood who's enjoyment of a bagel is much enhanced by that bagel being warm/crispy. I am not asking for much.

Today was the fifth time I've been in there and gotten in same answer. When I asked if it was ever going to be fixed, the lady behind the counter offered only a coy smile - as if to imply that no such toaster even existed! What kind of universe is this!? The bagels there are pretty good but it isn't rocket science, and such disrespect to customers will not go unnoticed.

This is my favorite part, great post! And, I agree with everything you said. A toaster is essential for a bagel store, are they going to run out of cream cheese next?

    WoW! ..Who needs a toaster!
  • Even when their toaster was working, it was an ordeal to get a bagel toasted there because they just used a standard everyday kitchen toaster. My guess is that they are so into the "authentic" thing, that they don't feel their untouchable bagels should be toasted and they'll never replace the toaster. Personally, I just don't think their super tiny bagels are that good -- damn the authenticity. I much prefer the ones at Windsor Terrace bagels or even the dreaded La Bagel Delight.
  • So wrong...

The toaster thing is annoying, but Bagel Hole still has the best bagels around. The Terrace Bagels "mini" bagels are a close second. Bagel Hole bagels are not "super tiny." They're the size bagels always were before bagels became a mass-market commodity throughout the U.S. (which is only the last 15-20 years). The giant bagels that are so prevalent now have entirely the wrong crispy outside to chewy middle ratio (if they even have a chewy middle at all). I blame Ess-a-Bagel for the spread of this abomination within New York itself.
  • they're the size bagels were before the country became obese. actually the post article is only 2 years old and i prefer their bagels to the other places who produce bagels on steroids
  • This is just my opinion but if a bagel NEEDS toasting it is not worth eating. I can modify that.. If you live in the boonies and your New York friend shleps out NYC bagels to you and they are a day old you are gonna need to toast them or at least give them the 10 seconds in the nuker to refresh them.
  • Subject: veets is right

Veets is absolutely correct. A good bagel doesn't need toasting and it would be a disrespect to ask them to toast it. The best bagels are so fresh and warm that a toasting would actually ruin them, and those places would refuse your service if you asked them to toast your bagel... is the author of the original post a recent implant to our fair city? anti toasting is not that preposterous of an idea.....

(it is worth noting however that I don't even really eat bagels and don't post very often here either. also i too am an implant but not so recent and grew up in the not-so-far suburbs. that was my disclaimer/addendum.)

    thank you
  • What kind of universe is this indeed?
You've been going there "for the last couple of months" and at least *five times* they haven't toasted your bagel.

    1.Boo Hoo.

2.You don't have an inaliable right to toasted bagels.

Surely there are many other fine establishment who would be happy to toast a bagel for you, perhaps you should familiarize yourself with them and patronize them in the future. It's called "voting with your wallet".

Alternately, If you have a toaster or toaster oven, you could even purchase untoasted bagels and toast them in your home or apartment.

    Hope this helps.
  • Toasters are only for day-old (or older) bagels. Fresh bagels should never be toasted, and this should be enforced by law.
  • This is a post by rockycat from chowhound in Jan 2007... sums it up pretty well...

The reason, I believe, that many people prefer their bagels toasted is that what passes for a bagel in most parts of the country is soft, squishy white roll misleadingly using the alias "bagel." These imposters are not bagels. Of course you need to toast these things, just to make them edible.

Unless you personal preference is generally for toasted bagels, which is really okay, the only reason you should need to toast a bagel is that you found a bakery that really knows what they're doing, excitedly bought far too many to eat before they went stale, and froze the extras. Those should probably be toasted after defrosting, but that's it.

Are bagels supposed to be chewy? Heck, yes! Cold? Not cold like from the refrigerator, but certainly room temperature. I somehow can't see putting a nice piece of whitefish on a toasted roll. (Although a favorite treat is a nice salt bagel straight out of the oven. That's oven, not toaster. Fresh, hot, don't get me started.)

Bialys are another story entirely. They are baked only, not boiled, and only remain fresh for one day. After that they must be frozen and toasted. A truly great bialy is a thing of joy and the only place I know who has the real thing is Kossar's on Grand Street in NY. They ship but the cost of overnighting is crazy. If you're interested in bialys, check out Mimi Sheraton's bialy book.

Oh no, not the bagel police again.
  • You know what? I like my bagel toasted, no matter where it comes from. A plain bagel toasted with butter. First, let me make something clear. I work in retail and used to work in the service industry. That being said, if I want my bagel toasted then they're going to toast it for me. It's a different story if the toaster is broken occasionally but they should fix it. Some people just like toasted bagels and I could give 2 sh*ts if the "perfect" bagel isn't supposed to be toasted.

Also, cvarrick? Sometimes people aren't going home so they can't toast it themselves. Some people work near a bagel store and don't have a toaster at their job (like me).

A disrespect to ask them to toast a bagel? WTF? It isn't as if the poster was asking them to do something completely outrageous. Like, asking for caviar on their bagel or for something that a bagel store wouldn't carry or to do something outlandish to their bagel. I've lived in NY for 27 years and have never gone into a bagel store that refused to toast a bagel for me.

Although the topic was trivial, the post was well-written and funny. I sincerely doubt that Gerald was enraged when he wrote it as it's obviously tongue in cheek.

    Amen!

But I like the bialys at Coney Island Bagels and Bialys even better than Kossar's.

  • Bagel Hole Rules! They have never had a toaster, and perhaps the fact that the workers are trying to be nice, and English is not their first language, has something to do with it. I'm sure they want to "please the customer," and they are always working sooo hard.
THIS is they type of place that needs a tip jar, and yet they actually don't have one@
No toaster needed, in my opinion, but that's just my opinion.

Word. I'd add "public transit" to this list, too.

  • Subject: My Hatred of Bagel Hole.

I've never received the bagel I've asked for from Bagel Hole. If my order consists of 1 bagel, it will be wrong. If my order consists of 2 bagels, they will only make one, while charging me for 2. That is, if they don't forget your order entirely! Being a block from my apt, they are convenient, but I'd rather walk to Bagel Delight or Terrace Bagels than waste my money in Bagel Hole. It certainly takes less time!
  • All of this talk is making me hungry AND glad that Terrace Bagels is my bagel fix
  • My number one bagel place is Terrace Bagels-love their bagels! I live in center Slope but go out of my way to go there.

Bagel Hole is second-their bagels are great. And, big deal that they can't toast your bagel-pfft! I once had them ship 2 dozen bagels to a friend of mine in another state who missed NY bagels-and they did a great job. Friend said it was like being back in Brooklyn.
  • wonder if h&h would consider opening a small outpost in park slope...

    would do well.

    i might email them.
  • this thread says bagel so many times that the word is starting to look spelled incorrectly to me.

I wonder if all bagels are really made in china?

I'm a firm believer that H&H only became popular because it was the closest place to Zabar's to get bagels. H&H bagels are all wrong- way too sweet.
  • I forgot I posted here. I love that people get this annoyed about bagel commentary.

For my next act, I'll write about how I think Di Fara's pizza is grossly overrated. Or that the portions at Applewood are too small. ;)
  • I like La Bagel Delight. I go to the one on 7th and 5th Street almost every weekend. The people there are so friendly and they sometimes toast your bagels if you beg them to...but usually they are so fresh you don't have to.
