I don't see how that place is going to be like Katz's. Are they going to be kosher style with an array of meat sandwiches, knishes, etc?
Does anyone besides me remember the kosher style deli that was on 7th Avenue many years ago?
Anyway, when we want food like that we go to Essex On Coney on Coney Island Avenue-great deli. -
For those that could handle reading the comments on brownstoner: I mentioned that they would be a basic deli with Boar's Head meats.
I got a little heat for it.
Today:
Walked by there. Behind the counter: Boar's Head meats, cheese, bacon......
But hell, I still hope they step up to their Katz challenge. Basic deli meats are fine. If they deliver, stay up till 3am, even better. -
nope. not Katz
it's Australian owned so i wouldn't hold my breath for authentic bagels
or home-made roast beef
but all-in-all a decent deli.
and i'm sure it'll do great with the foot traffic running from the slope to the pacific street train station
i'm still divided whether i prefer this over the old mexican bodega that used to be in the space... -
theres a bodega on the next block.
also most of the bodegas on 4th make really bad sandwiches for the prices they charge. At least this way the sandwiches might be better for similar prices. -
has anyone gone since they opened? I had surgery yesterday and still can't eat much, so looking for a place with good matzah ball soup.
-
I remember the deli on 7th near 3rd! Bernsteins? After they went out, we wondered for years if another was to open;especially when the Atkins Diet became popular. Guess PS can't support a jewish deli, I mean, they're not the healthiest, and they are expensive.
I think when people want pastrami, they go to their local bagel place and get it with swiss!
I'll try Canteen for sure, just to show my support for the meat eating populace.
Question: Do you think in today's vegan/vegetarian/bioregional cuisine, a real jewish deli could survive? Just curious. -

Down with the Vegans, up with the Kishka! -
Subject: "I remember the deli on 7th near 3rd."
Near 3rd? I believe it was actually near Berkeley Place, and I still mourn its departure!
We also miss Bellamelio, which was for several years Park Slope's answer to Zabar's.
It was a wonderful "appetizing" shop. -
Yes, it was down near Berkeley-not near 3rd.
A friend of mine who owned the Windmill Shoppe back then always said it wouldn't last, that people in PS were too health aware to eat that much meat-I don't think the prices worried people. -
so yeah love the banter on jewish food, i love it and grew up with it. wish there was a shop in the hood to get "appetizing". but seriously, good matzah ball soup anywhere? a diner is fine too. I'm just in lots of pain, only have one good arm, and mom doesn't live in ny anymore to make it for me (also please see my humor in this, as i don't mean to be whining!

Are the comments on Brownstoner any less inane than here? -

Yes, I do. I think a lot of Brooklynites would love a good Jewish deli.

Let the sprout eating vegans be damned.
