Chocolate Girl — Brooklynian

Chocolate Girl

So I finally stopped into Chocolate Girl on 7th Ave (between 11th and 12th) to buy some chocolate. The lady behind the counter was very nice and helpful. I got two chocolate covered pretzels and two chocolate covered Oreos and everything was good (I didn't eat it all myself but tastiness was confirmed by all!) The total for these four small pieces of chocolate was over $10. Here's the question: Is this place very expensive or is that the going rate for gourmet chocolates? I don't buy a lot of fancy chocolates so I don't have anything to compare this to, but it averages out to $2.50 for each pretzel and Oreo, which seems kinda high.

Even though it's expensive, I definitely want to support the business so if the prices are relatively similar to other chocolate places, I'll feel a little better. Any comparisons out there?

  • I cannot offer help, but i want to add that I walk by that place a billion times a week and the smell is going to make me eat my way through it if I ever happen to walk in. I've been avoiding it because I dont need to spend $40 on chocolate, but if anyone has personal faves I'd love to hear em for when I do eventually break down...
  • That seems like more than they charge at Jacques Torres.

My first thought is that you paid too much. However, I would have to see the sizes of the candies that you purchased before passing judgment. For all I know, your idea of "small" is a two-foot long pretzel stick.

For $10.00, you can get "about 38 Milk Chocolate Covered Mini-Pretzels" and a snowman toy from Godiva.

A question to ask yourself: did those four allegedly "small" candies come wrapped in a stuffed animal weighing over 100 ounces or 3000 grams?

  • Pretzels were regular hard pretzel size, like the braided twists you get in a bag of Rold Gold. Not the mini-ones that you see, but the regular size, maybe 2 inches across and thin, not thick. They had a generous coating of chocolate and some mini-chocolate chips. They were served in an unadorned paper bag (alas, no gold leaf or jewels).

Oreos were regulation size Oreos. Also, if you walk into the store, the smell is so intoxicating, you might just be willing to hand over your wallet to get some of the chocolate. I start drooling just thinking about it.
  • thats not too terrible for those pretzels. especially if they're exceptionally yum. and the mini chocolate chips on them sounds like a nice touch. dangit, im probably gonna go get some of these now. just the thought of it defies my will power. :(
  • You can only compare prices to other hand made chocolate shops; like cocoa bar or chocolate bar...that's like saying, after eating a steak at Le Cirque (or whatever) "Yeah, but my bodega has it on a roll for only $2.75!"

I think Jacques Torres is a fair (even generous) comparison.

Do Cocoa Bar and Chocolate Bar make their own chocolate?
  • this is the kosher place, right? kosher ingredients don't come cheap. (and neither does good chocolate.)
  • Yes, this is the kosher place. I hadn't thought of that, but that could definitely figure into the cost. That and the quality ingredients can add up, I guess. Looking at places like Richart and Teuscher, chocolate can be very expensive.
  • Subject: $32 a pound...

I went in there when they first opened. It's $32 a pound. I don't know if you can compare them to Jacques Torres. I've been wondering how they will do. I think it is just much too expensive.

Think of what the mark up must be on chocolates to begin with. To say, because it's kosher, it's that much more - I don't believe that's the reason. they are charging what they think or hope people will pay. Sometimes that makes sense and feels right or okay but, in this instance, it doesn't. To me, at least.

it really depends on what this store owner considers kosher.

i read she was from the luvavitch sect (i could be wrong), and they have far more stringent regulations: boxes that simply say "k" or OUR don't make the cut. and nothing about their food is affordable--i work in bburg, near the satmar neighborhood, and regular prices are soaring.
  • Hummm...this post has made me hungry. I will have to venture down to this Kosher Chocolate Heaven and let you all know my thoughts as well.

I usually go to the Cocoa Bar since it's close to where I live. I got hooked on their cakes but they recently changed the way the sell their cakes - instead of by the slice, they have these mini cakes. They didn't change the price but let me tell you, my b/f and I used to be able to split a slice with extra left over...now we polish one off and look at eachother wanting more.

Boo to downsizing! Yea to Kosher!

Oh - and the prices seem kinda high, but considering the area...they aren't outrageous (at least, in my little old opinion).

Yeah, I totally agree. I hate what they've done to their sizes.

    And yay to Kosher indeed!
