Marjorie Thompson Realty — Brooklynian

Marjorie Thompson Realty

Just wondering if anyone has dealt with Marjorie of Marjorie Thompson Realty in the past? My landlord requires me to deal with her and she has been nothing but rude to me and I don't understand why.

Does anyone have any light to shed on her poor (this is an understatement) attitude? I haven't let myself stoop to her level but she is so upsetting in her tone and manner of speaking to me and I'm not quite sure how to deal with it. I love my apartment and just want to figure out how to get her to treat me like a human being.

My guess is that her business has become quite successful with the change in the neighborhood and it's a shame that she's such a poor representation of this place.

Thanks for any thoughts you might be able to share.

  • i deal with washington realty all the time. i am a landlord in the area and i refuse to deal with any one esle. she has been bringing me quality tenants for years. maybe if you dont like her or her style you should try craigslist.com
  • There have been several discussions here about Marjorie Thompson -- try the search function at the top of the page to find some of the old threads about her and you will probably find plenty of views, both favorable and not.
  • money talks baby. bullshit walks.
  • That's where I don't understand the line of thinking though - I am a quality tenant so why, as a landlord, would you support someone who speaks so rudely to your tenants? Her style is not a style - it's an inappropriate way to speak to other individuals.

She can bring you quality tenants AND be respectful to us. And, in doing so, she would receive my recommendation to my friends who are currently looking. But, with the way she treats others I wouldn't send anyone to her.

Craigslist is great but personally I like dealing with brokers sometimes (I know...crazy...) because technically the brokers should be working as my advocate in finding a responsible landlord. In NYC, finding a good landlord is sometimes as hard as finding a good tenant.

I realize that the landlords on this site like the relationship they have created with her but all I ask is that you watch her interactions with your tenants. In not saying anything to her, you are supporting her mistreatment of others. All it takes is asking her to speak to us with a tad bit of respect. As the property owner you are in the position of power. Why not use it for a little good? No one deserves to be spoken to in the manner she speaks with people and as a renter in the current NYC rental market we often can't do anything but sit back and take her verbal abuse.
  • just the fact that i a comfortable with her is enough. you as the tenant on the other hand have many options. go t another broker. theres two offices on franklin there one on rogers. she not the only one.
  • That may not help if Marjorie manages the building GuestTenant lives in. I was forced to deal with that lunatic slumlord Sonia Santos because she managed the building I lived in. I didn't have much of a choice at the time since there was no way I could afford to move.
  • Note from one of your site administrators here:

The anonymous guest who has a business relationship with Marjorie would do well to read the site rules, available at the big honkin' "READ THE RULES" link at the top of every page of this site. GuestTenant had a legitimate question about a local businessperson. Please don't attack him or her for asking.

As I mentioned earlier, Marjorie Thompson has been discussed here before. I tried to pull up some of those old threads to post links here but unfortunately they're not coming up through the search function for some reason (maybe related to a site crash we had recently). So folks should feel free to chime in with their experiences. But let's all keep this civil, please.
  • I think any landlord that articulates "money walks and bullshit talks" on a public website has too much money in his/her pocket. you provide a service. your realtor should, too. if she doesn't? she's a fool. you like dealing with fools? well, that's for you to figure out.

GuestTenant - my dealings with MT have been very simple. I speak with her forcefully and politely. "I'm picking up my keys now." or "Your realtor lackey promised me one month rent as a broker fee." and I just stare. it's total lawyer/poker face. she doesn't seem to be capable of friendly interaction, but social intimidation works. use it.
  • Thanks for the support and suggestions. While it's horrible, it does help to hear that she's disrespectful to others and it's not just me. I'll try to be stern and let my NYer inside come out. =)
  • OP you should understand something. The broker works for the LANDLORD not the tenant, even though you are paying her. So bear that in mind in the transaction. If she does not make this clear, you can report her to the New York Board of Real Estate. There are very clear rules about revealing the client relationship. Most brokers never do this but they are legally obligated to do so.

OK, a show of hands: who would want this guy as your landlord? Sounds like he and Marjorie Thompson are a match made in heaven.

Marjorie Thompson was my broker and she has been nothing but unprofessional in the manner in which she has gone about collecting her fee, and she is rude and belligerent. Thank goodness she doesn't manage my building.
  • Marjorie Thompson was my broker, I'm about to go bring her my fee in a second, actually, and she was really nice. Accomodating and professional, not a hint of rudeness or bullying or anything of the sort. Out and out friendly, really. I don't know what this is all about. It's kind of surprising to read.

  • I too have to say that Marjorie has been very nice to me and others I know of in the neighborhood. She has actually given very good advice even when it looked like the sale or rental was not going to go to her. I'm not sure of what the problems some have had with her are and I'm not going to say that they're invalid because everyone has their own experience; however, everyone I know has said that she has been fine.

Regarding the "money talks" comment...then you just have to find a new landlord/place. This may sound like a simplistic response, but the reality is that a landlord looks at a rental as just that a business transaction for which there is much demand and very little supply in this neighborhood. Right, wrong, or indifferent, if a prospective tennant is unhappy, there are like 10 more right behind them that will pay.

Dakotas way here having submission problems again, sorry.

I've been a landlord for over 21 years and I would never deal with anyone who was disrespectful of my prospective tenants. That's just unacceptable.

I was a tenant several times, who had crazy landlords who thought they were above the law. Unbelievable what some things people think they can get away with. It's a shame you may be forced to deal with someone like Ms. Thompson if you want a certain apartment . I have to say though, if it was me and the landlord approved of behavior like that, I would run as far as possible away from that building. If they condone disrespect, then you don't want to deal with them because it would set a president that they will, in turn, disrespect you no matter how great a tenant you may be.

Anyhow, that's been my experience in life. Good luck and don't take that "money talks" crap from anyone.
  • I found my apartment through Marjorie Thompson just over two years ago, and it was a great experience. I loved the first and only place she showed me. She was very friendly, and I wrote her a check for her fee the same day she requested it.

The question I have is why anyone would have to deal with her (or any broker) repeatedly once you've selected your apartment and the transaction is complete? I can't envision a situation where I would ever be "forced by my landlord" to deal with her again. Can someone explain the circumstances under which that might happen? Just curious.

Thanks, and please excuse my ignorance if this is obvious to others.

I guess. If having "Capt. Planet" or something associated with some random words on the internet actually lends credibility to anything. I don't feel like registering. I'm just saying she was fine is all.

Well, actually, being a registered user who has posted for a while DOES lend some credibility. To use Capt. Planet as an example, he has posted over 350 times here -- people who use this site regularly "know" him, to some extent, and it's clear that he isn't someone just dropping by to pump up a particular business or business owner. People who are registered and have been posting for a while do tend to be taken as more credible by the other users of the site than guests.

Hope that helps you understand what I think Capt. Planet was trying to get at.
  • oh yeah, totally. i was just being a dick.

    anyway, maybe i'll register.
  • "Odd Bird" That is all I can think of to describe her. That is some old grandma lingo, by the way. She really has good days and bad ones, too. Catch her on the bad ones, then you're in a bear trap. The good ones are like doves' nests. Sweet deals and love songs, all is peaceful.

But beware of the bad days. It's like that guy in the booth in "The Birds." You see something bad about to happen, but you can't fix it. You just have to watch the aftermath.

We actually found Marjorie Thompson on CraigsList and totally agree that she is unprofessional and rude. She has no customer service skills at all and relies on pressure to rent apartments.

I recently heard from a friend that he bought a house from Craig's List. The house had been put on the list by Marjorie Thompson but was actually another broker's exclusive. Marjorie alleged demanded a fee from the buyer but backed down when buyer refused to pay her.

I have to disagree with those of you who have problems with Marjorie. Though she may be a relatively blunt speaker, she is nowhere near rude. She's been nothing but helpful to me and my boyfriend, and got us a great deal on an apartment. Plus, she seems to have wonderful relationships with landlords in the area--most likely because she's one herself. If you're looking for a broker who falsely gushes over everything in sight (including you), that's another issue entirely.
  • there have been numerous posts about marjorie thompson on these boards. my own personal experience? i tried to take my apartment off the market, and nicely and politely contacted her about cancelling my contract, and she not only refused but screamed holy hell at me. it was utterly bizarre and completely unprofessional. i changed the locks within the hour. the woman is unstable.
  • Subject: "About Face Marjorie Thompson"

I'm really not the type of person to have confrontations with people - I'm a very reasonable person. Marjorie Thompson was my broker and I too would comment that when we approached her during the time that we were looking at apartments, she was extremely friendly and nice. We followed through with the lease through her and when some people in our building warned us about her we thought they a bit crazy. However, I can honestly say that in EVERY interaction after we paid our fee, she has been at the very least curt with us and at worst very unprofessional in her property managing responsibilities - particularly upon moving out nearly two years later and in acting as a liaison between us and our out-of-state landlord.
