In nycpet.com the store on 7th ave and 13th street?
I did notice the 9th street store now has that name now. -
VC Pet and nycpet have always been connected. The stores are owned by siblings. I guess VC just decided to go under the nycpet umbrella.

The 9th street store was the original family business.. started by the Dad.. It is my understanding that Mike and George are just restructuring for some family reason. -
Subject: VC Pet
Yes it is the same family, but the nice thing about VC Pets was Mike - and he's no longer working at that location. It was great having someone there who knew the customers and their pets. -
Mike won't be there anymore? Oh, i loved him! I always thought it was great to have a pet nutritionist in the neighborhood! When the pet food scare hit a few months ago, i went to him and he gave me tips on how to make homemade cat food for my cat who has urinary issues. What a nice guy too!
Where is he going to be? -
I think Mike is in their Williamsburg location - not sure why.
I think it sucks that he's not at 9th Street anymore...there was always a family member there (Mike, his sister, and sometimes George) - there doesn't seem to be anything "special" about the store anymore. I wish Mike were still working there - he was so caring and he knew so much about pet care.
I walked in there last week and there was this young kid there - nice kid, but no way does he have the knowledge Mike had...way too young for that! -
Whoa!! I saw Mike in there 2 days ago when I went in to but dog food.... I have no really inside information but the young guys are there "helping" till the family gets things in place.... Now that is information from the source.
-
Update....Don't look for Mike in the 9th Street store... he won't be there unless to fill in. The young kids in there know absolutely nothing about the stock. They don't even know where the ladder is to get a product on a high shelf. I did notice the store is beings re-stocked which was not the case afew weeks ago when they were out of things and when I asked when the delivery for such and such was .. they had no idea.

I think the whole thing stinks - I always felt a loyalty to the store, but I don't feel that anymore. I actually think that this was all George's idea (if you go to their website it mentions George's experience with pets but not one word about Mike)
I can understand them changing it to NYC Pet, but I think not having a family member there is a mistake. The best part of that store was Mike...it might as well be a Petco now.
I hope they're reading these blogs so that they know that folks are unhappy. -
Let's go to their site, hit feedback and send them some emails letting them know how we feel about what is going on with that store and with Mike!
off to send an email now. -
I have not been to the 9th St. location, but NYC Pet is pretty good. My veterinarian actually recommended it - they carry good brands of pet foods that not all the big chains carry. I go to the NYC Pet on 5th Ave. near Union, and they have good stock, and are fairly knowledgeable about the products. Just my two cents.
-
i agree with you, muggle. i think NYC pet is a decent store, and they do carry a lot of good brands. i had little experience with VC, though i never heard anything bad about them.
personally, i don't think it's fair to trash the one just because it is replacing the other. -

Don't you think it is possible that Mike would prefer working another store.. I understand he is in Wiliamsburg.

Subject: No, there's nothing wrong...
There's nothing wrong with NYC Pets - just saying the nice thing about VC Pet was the consistency of having a family member there all the time. They really got to know you and your pets.
It is possible that Mike prefers working in Williamsburg :-( - I know I'll miss him. -
Just because I am voicing my regrets about the change there does not mean anyone is bashing NYC Pets, etc. And, maybe Mike is happy in Williamsburg-maybe he isn't-none of us know. I don't see the big deal about a customer letting them know that they are sad that he left.

Yes... you are right.. no big deal to voice opinions on this. And I am sure Mike would appreciate that people really appreciated him over all the years he was in the 9th street store and more than that he would appreciate that people have such strong feelings about the family business that his dad started. -
I have to bring this to the top of the list again. I walked in today looking for a certain type of rawhide chew that I know that they had not carried for quite some time. How do I know.. well Mike told me that George had it on 7th ave... and that is where I have been buying it. So now I figure the stock is the same and go in and ask for these rawhide chew... Two young people in there are clueless. I know where these items usuallly kep and I Find what I need. Horray!!! I tell them that if someone else wants this item./.. They are HERE!!!!!i also bought dog food which I dont need now but will because... no kidding I need another place to buy dog food!!!!!!!
Oh and there is a sign on the inside door that says.. "Suggestions fron Mike for Christmas stuff for dogs.. blah blah. And the dog sweaters and coats are OUTSIDE the store on a rack in a messy display. -
I don't have a dog, but I've had very good luck ordering food & other staples from Amazon. You can set up regular deliveries... no sales tax, either. There's also the oft-discussed Fresh Direct. Maybe one of those would have your dog food?
-
I've had to go to NYCPet on 9th street a few times, and I can tell you, I really miss Mike. They have two young kids working there...and almost every question you ask you get "I don't know". Not even let me see if I can find out, just "I don't know". Supposedly one of them worked for Whiskers in NYC...but with the lack of knowledge I really doubt it.
I really miss the personal service and the caring about your pets...and the knowedge- I know you can send an email to George on their website with questions, but it was a lot easier when you could ask someone right in the store. Even if Mike isn't at that location anymore, can't they get people that know things?
I used to feel such a loyalty to that store...don't feel it at all anymore. -
Went in there last week and two teenagers were 'running" the store. We only had to buy cat litter and we knew which one we wanted, so, that worked out well. but, when I started to ask questions about dog food (they didn't have the one I usually buy), I was met with blank stares and a lot of 'uhh, not sure" . sigh.................

I went in on Monday and Mike was in the store!
I asked him if this was "permanent" and he wouldn't commit to saying yes. I asked.."If I come in tomorrow will you be here?" He said, Yes." Friday..yes! Next week?... answer.. One day at a time.
So if you need cat food next week.. Go in and get it this week and say hello!! -
I think as long as they get the business back he'll stay!!! So everyone who left, go on back.
-
Bringing this back to the top. I was there today buying dog food. Mike is there... HE IS THERE. If you have forsaken this store... go back. I printed out all the discussions on this forum for Mike to show him how much he was missed and how much he has always been appreciated by the customers.
In any business it is as likely that bad decicions will be made along with the good ones. I think many of us agree that putting Mike back in this location is a good business decision and a perk to all of us who have gotten to know him.
Stop by and say hello and consider buying whatever supplies you need for your pets.
p.s... I feel I need to say I have no financial interest in this business. I am not Mike's sister. His sister's name is Mary and she was often minding the store on Sundays and I hope Mary comes back and a day or two a week at NYC pets , too. I have missed here cheerful self, too. -
The best pet food store in the slope is on 7th ave and 16th.
-
Veets, thanks for bringing this to the top...and nice of you to print this blog for Mike
Everyone that abandoned the store, you can go back now...and that's how we can keep Mike! -
I go to the pet store on 7th ave and 16th. Joe and his sons are always there and they know a lot about their products. Very good guys - I like spending my money there.
-
Mike is the best, and it will always be VC Pets to me :P

Peanuts and I are great fans!
Friday I went in for some cans of dog food and the brand was not there... Mike made a phone call and by the afternoon the food was re-stocked.
THAT was not the kind of thing that happened for the months he was not in the store. -
Yup Veets...we certainly are great fans!!!
Nothing happened when Mike was gone...store just went downhill. Welcome back Mike!
Howdy, Stranger!
