I saw something beautiful tonight — Brooklynian

I saw something beautiful tonight

I've been really stressed out lately, money, health, pets, you name it. Tonight everything started to overwhelm me and I was in a pretty sad state. So I was walking the dogs around 1 AM and putting some canned food out for the stray kitties when I heard a strange noise. I had my hood up so I couldn't tell where it was coming from but it sounded like ducks. I looked up to see a flock of ducks flying across the night sky in a double vee, quacking away. It was like they were saying goodbye to the city for the winter. I stood there amazed staring up at them until they flew out of sight. It was one of the most beautiful and unexpected things I've ever seen.

Sorry for the corny post but I just had to share this experience.

  • Yes, but did you spot the lone duck behind you, going for your pocket?

  • or the short bald man with a strange speech impediment following them with a shotgun?

Actually it was a flock :P
  • It was one of those rare moments where there was no one else outside so it almost felt like the moment was for me alone. As if they were saying something to me, they were flying south for the winter but would be back in the spring. That as dark and cold as it is now, inevitably the sun and warmth would return.

Boy, I sound like a nutter.
  • MY something beautiful - has anyone else seen the tree at Underhill park? All of the other trees in the park are completely naked, but this one tree has all of it's leaves and they're bright red. Totally odd and beautiful.
  • I haven't seen it but I'll make a point of walking by there. It's little things like that that can change my mood, even if only for a few minutes. I want to hear more, anyone else see something beautiful lately?

yes! same thing last year. i love that tree. (are the others around it maples? i never think to wonder until their leaves are down, but if not, then there's the explanation, i imagine.)

i have to wait for the train at white plains in the evenings, and hundreds of crows roost for the night in the trees across from the station. their crowns are just above the level of the platform. now that the sky is dark while i wait, you can just barely see these darker bird-shaped blots shimmering against it, above the few branches that still have yellow leaves clinging. it looks like the leaves have turned pure black.
  • Um, so I figured out that they were geese not ducks. Doh!
  • My cell phone camera doesn't do it justice, but here's the tree that I'm talkin' 'bout -

    The others are maples, too...
  • sweet tea, that sounds great. Too bad it would be too dark to take a good picture. I love that a group of crows is called a murder.
